In looking over the various human resource policies of the University of New Orleans, I came across this sentence in the “Sexual Harassment” section:
Sexual Harassment subverts the mission of the University and therefore is [sic] has become necessary to prohibit such behavior.
Now, is it just me, or is the tone of that sentence (never mind the grammar or the spelling) a bit disturbing?
I guess you don’t need to have a degree from a university to write copy for its handbooks.

It’s a lazy but honest mistake (changed the “is” to an “it” - a simple typo). Not that I’m defending the University of No Opportunity but at least LSU has a good sports program.
In matters of sex, I don’t mind refocusing people’s attention toward what seems to be the big question for the next 50 years: Who’s going to be left standing? I can’t deny the significance of matters of sexual harassment and sexual freedom, but the looming question is, Whose grandchildren will occupy and rule the Earth? Here at home, will it be the Left or the Right? Globally, will it be the East or the West? There are many possible versions of the basic question, according to our divisions by nation, religion, race, political faction, intelligence, wealth, educational attainment, and probably other things that have escaped my attention so far.
As for the spelling, yes, it was an honest mistake. What’s truly bothersome/amusing is the implication that UNO has only recently felt it necessary to prohibit sexual harassment.
And as for the second issue–the question of who’ll rule the earth in 50 years–I have to say that my vote goes to the ants. Giant fucking ants, like in that Joan Collins movie set on that tropical island planted with acres and acres of sugar cane. Everyone will have to wear headscarves and bell bottoms and run a lot. Very, very cool.
