Close to home
We’re getting word from a couple different sources that a brick building collapsed near Laurel and Washington, which is two blocks from our house.
While this isn’t encouraging, we’re buoyed by hearing that flooding isn’t as bad as it could have been Uptown. It seems the problems Uptown are more from the wind, though there’s still no way to call in and get this confirmed firsthand.
You gotta figure it’ll be at least Wednesday before they allow residents to begin returning. While conditions are tough enough in Orleans Parish, those returning from the north and east will have to pass through some areas (Slidell, etc) that retained a lot harder hit than New Orleans itself.
I’m not sure if it’s the not knowing or if it’s the knowing that’s worse.

We’re thinking of you here in Houston! Be safe!
My Mom’s in a condo building on Jackson and Prytania, and she says the wind was wipping around, but there wasn’t any flooding to speak of. I realize you’re a ways away, but it might give you a point of reference. She says the streets are dry now.
Thank you Peter. That’s definitely a help.
Anyone hear anything from Mid-City around the end of Bayou St. John?
http://www.nola.com/forums/stbtownhall/
Have you tried reading the forums at Nola? See url above. Don’t know how accurate they are..but some people have been able to post information.
Good luck to you!
NOLA has been little help to this point, but they’re overwhelmed. I think it’ll take a day or so for their troops to get deployed and reporting back on what they find. Everyone’s in overload for now.
Thanks.
Hey folks. I am in Fort Worth, but originally from NOLA, and my family still lives in the city. I have been keeping an eye on the local news websites, but am hoping for some specific neighborhood info. Is there any news about the Midcity area, but this time around the cemetery end of Canal? How about Old Mertaire, specifically near the Metairie Road/Codifer intersection?
Good luck. We’re praying for y’all!
Hey, I’m in Lafayette waiting out the storm. I live on 7th near Magazine and I’m glad to see the updates. I have been hearing all sorts of subtle warnings about prolonged power outages. Apparently multiple power plants and 75+ substations are out, not to mention downed power lines. They are going to have to rebuild - almost from the ground up in many cases. The damage is the worst in Entergy’s history. Their website has an official press release that estimates a month or more. You guys hang in there - and thanks for the info.
The collapsed brick building being shown on CNN and MSNBC is at the corner of Burgundy and Touro in the Marigny. That’s the brick building with the Dell computer on the second floor. They’re also showing several collapsed brick walls in Downtown, some with cars flattened by the collapse.
I’d be interested in any information on the Bywater between Press Street and Poland.
We evacuated late:
Bywater - 12:30 p.m. Sunday
Slidell - 5:30 p.m. Sunday
Hattiesburg - 11:00 p.m. Sunday
Nashville - 5:30 a.m. Monday
Contraflow was ended by the time we hit Slidell and then Mississippi prevented anyone from Louisiana from taking E-10 to Florida, routing us all north onto two lanes of I-59.
Nashville is now under its first ever tropical storm advisory. The remanants of Katrina are due here tomorrow.
STEVE O’KEEFE
anyone know what the conditions in the Fabourg Marigny are like?
Does anyone know anything about the area around Ochsner in Metairie?

I just moved to north Alabama from Nashville a week and a half ago. Had no idea I was dodging a hurricane.
High water in Faubourg Marigny, so it appears, but going down. The 9th Ward got it hard, apparently, thanks to a breach in the levee.
But, frankly, all I’ve been able to determine for true is that no assessment has yet been possible. I’m seeing video from various neighborhoods, but it’s impossible to tell if it’s Bywater, Irish Channel, Mid-City or Algiers. Even if they started today, it’s going to be at least a couple days before a true overview could be completed.
We’ll spend another day away before we start to move toward home. Then we’ll have to sidestep the various literal and figurative roadblocks. Thank God for this forum, which allows us to exchange as much as we can. I’ll pass along anything I hear.
about mid-city at the end of the bayou, bad news- the lakeview flooding eventually reached the bayou and surged down to the end, overflowing its banks. the basement at memorial hospital flooded. I believe I read that on nola.com.
Anyone know of conditions around Carrollton Ave & Canal Blvd in Metairie south of I-10?
Any damage reports from the Garden District?
Fox News just showed some aerial shots - destroyed house off of the 12-Mile bridge and flooded areas of NO East. Also saw a brief shot of a street sign on Humanity Street that was almost completely covered with water.
Here’s a pic of Rampart Street:

Craig — re Bayou St. John. I was watching the WWL internet broadcast at about 5:30 p.m. and the announcer was reporting that her brother or husband worked at American Can and had just called into to say that the water in Bayou St. John had all of a sudden started rising, real fast. Cars in the American Can (I think that was the company) parking lot were being flooded.
Thank you Andy. The old American Can builing is now upscale condos, so flooding there involves residences. This helps give me an idea of what’s happening and where.
I’ll be interested in seeing the aerials tomorrow, once the weather clears.

I am in PA, but most of my family is in the 9th ward, New Orleans East, and Metarie/LaPlace. I can’t get a handle on how bad things really are, although I fear the worst. My grandmother evacuated, but only to Metarie. I don’t status of many other relatives. Can anyone tell me the status in Metarie…and are photos coming in yet of the 9th ward. I saw some footage earlier, but it looked like New Orleans East.
Any information is most appreciated.
And do you know what the irony is? You folks in La, Ms, Tx, Al, etc send people to Washington who hate the federal govt, do everything in their power to reduce the size and reach of the government - and the first thing you do when a bit of trouble comes - is run to the Feds - you want FEMA, you want Federal Aid, you cry for the support of the federal government. Listen to Bush’s speach today pledging a massive response from the Feds as an example.
And after DC bails you out, you will all start whining about taxes and the oppressive government and send the same crazies back.
Hypocrites.
Hey, UG
Go fuck yourself.
Yeah, what Kelly said.
All cellphone access is down for the count. Weird - I was getting calls through around 3:00 PM today, but now I can’t get through to Baton Rouge at all.
Cotton Mill Apts? I left on Sunday … and can’t find anyone that knows how about the area around Annunciation and Tchoupitoulas. Does anyone know if the Cotton Mill Apts were hit hard, windows, etc? My prayers are with all of you! See you in New Orleans.
Hey ug–do you know that we all pay taxes too-and also help bail out jerks like you when needed.
So much for help the needy-is Jesus one of those in the areas you mentioned-or do you even know that Name?!!
Does anyone know anything specific about Slidell? I’ve only heard reference to it twice and both comments were very vague. Is it flooded? If so, does anyone know what area is flooded?
Does anyone know anything about the state of the Universities in New Orleans? I go to UNO and my girlfriend goes to Loyola. We are now in Austin and concerned about that status of our schools! Anyone out there know anything?? Also, we live in forest isle apartments in the west bank. heard anything?? LET US KNOW PLEASE!!!
I read on a live journal entry that someone was able to communicate with N.O. friends via cell phone text messaging. Just a thought.
Have also heard that I-10 to Slidell is more or less wiped out. Most of Uptown is fairly flood free but a lot of those trees that make Uptown so pretty are down.
Does anyone know the conditions in eastern Slidell south of 190 and just west of Military?
I can’t believe the comment from UG. I assume
ug was the name his neanderthal mother gave him
when he was spawned. I love N.O. and hope and
pray that the city is “hanging on”. The news
we get on TV is horrifying. God bless and protect you all!
Good luck to all that were caught in the path. My thoughts are with you.
Luckily, we live in the land of the free including free speech but it ill behooves me to see you attacking one another when we should be uniting. Look, God forgives and the government doesn’t care if you don’t like it, they’ll help anyway…so lay off those who speak ill of any and all and try some compassion for those who were hard hit…
I pray for all the people affected by this storm. The pics I see are horrible….I love New Orleans! I see Gulf Port was hit very hard as well. The lose of life if horrific.
And to UG, the coward you are for not posting your name, you should be thinking of people and not politics! Shame on you!
You are all in our prayers. We love your cities and your peoples. God help every one of you. We will pray that help is swift and that you may return home and start over faithfully. May you prosper. Thank you for taking such good care of one another, and of your animals. Love, Ohio residents
well im assuming that its not safe or wise to come down to the french quarter this weekend.
I had planned to come down.
anyone know the conditions in downtown or are the festivities still on?
Any word of those in Lillian Parish, Bogalusa?
I have family trapped there, and of course no word.
Thanks Y’all.
Well, Jeff, I guess the only idiot bigger than you is UG. I join the thousands of others who are not self-centered, unfeeling, etc. in sending my thoughts and prayers to those who are suffering and in despair. May God send you relief and hope.
i don’t want to be the bearer of bad tidings in any way but i just got off the phone with my in-laws down in LA and they are saying metarie is gone - washed out - and if anyone is wondering my uncle down there said his house in kenner was flooded 4 feet deep so doesn’t look good there either - as for belle chasse/jesuit bend heavy wind damage and huge trees on highway 23 i believe they said - looks like 4 weeks before can return there…this is what i know at this point - hope it helps
does anybody know about the chef menteur crowder area or the filmore st. anthoney in new orelans?
My prayers are with each and every one of you and your families. I live in South Carolina so I have seen the type of destruction first hand. With the way Americans opened up their hearts and wallets to the victims of the Tsunami, I hope the world is looking to send aid here. From the pics I see online of NO, it is 80% flooded.
Has anyone heard about the Uptown area in NO?
I am so upset by this horrible event.I wish the best to all of those people who are/were affected by this tragic event. My uncle is a police officer in New Orleans.I just wish there was something i could do to help them people. I send out to them my deepest sorrows, and i will pray that the better will come of this soon; really soon.
I speek for alot of people from Lake Charles and Camron Parish.
Has anyone heard the conditions around Ochsner Hospital in Old Jefferson near the levy and Jefferson Highway? Is this area flooded. I am a NO native who now lives in CO. I am still trying to wake up from the nightmare. All of my family still lives there and I cannot get in touch. Also, any news on the conditions in the Madisonville area near Brewster road and out off Lee Road in Covington or Abita, LA?
Any news would be awesome! I hope everyone stays safe!
As a resident of Wisconsin I am watching this all in awe and dismay. I know myself and millions others are praying for your safety. Please be safe!
Does anyone have any info on the airport in NO my friend is to fly home on Saturday and Ameriwest wants to dump her in Houston and let her figure out how to get her own way home to Baton Rouge. Her car is parked on the 6th level in NO airport?
Bucktown, West End devastated
Tuesday, 6:41 p.m.
Homes in West End, Bucktown and at the Orleans-Jefferson Parish line are nearly underwater, with residents being plucked from the water and rooftops by passing boats, WWL-TV video shows.
The video shows that the popular Sid-Mars restaurant is gone.
Along Pontchartrain Boulevard, the video shows only the rooftops of single-story homes and the upper floors of two-story homes.
Many of those rescued are being brought to the I-10 near its split with I-610. They said the area survived the actual hurricane. But soon after it seemingly had passed over the area, the floodwaters rose, swamping houses.
Neighbors spoke of going house to house, using pickaxes to break through roofs to get to people hiding in their attics.
Water rising at 17th St. canal
Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.
Mayor Ray Nagin has announced that the attempt to plug a breach in the
17th Street canal at the Hammond Highway bridge has failed and the
rising water is about to overwhelm the pumps on that canal.
The result is that water will begin rising rapidly again, and could
reach as high as 3 feet above sea level. In New Orleans and Jefferson
Parish, that means floodwaters could rise as high as 15 feet in the next
few hours.
Nagin urged residents to try to find higher ground as soon as possible.
Not too many market driven for-profit firms working on saving folks in New Orleans. And I don’t see alot of faith based organizations with the technology or where-withall needed to save folks either. I think UG has a point.
To our brothers and sisters down south, STAY STRONG , we will pray for you all.
We are GOD’s greatest creation, created in the image of his Glory. let’s rise to the occasion, you are great and together, will overcome……and for ignorant, selfish people people like UG and looters I say this to you…..JESUS WALKS…..the hour of judgement will one day be upon you.
our thoughts and prayers are with you all, may GOD bless and protect you.
Good morning everyone. I am searching for information about the mid-city area around Orleans ave and bayou st. john. I live closer to Ursaline by the pirvate high school. Do anyone have information on that area? The last I heard the area by the race track on gentily blvd going toward broad had alot of water. also, i am seeking information about the uptown area around 2nd and st. charles. my cousin, her husband, four children, and 95 yrs old great grand mother has not been heard from. do anyone have information on that part of town? I thank evryone for their help and continue to pray for eveyone who has been affected by this storm.
Will the nightmare ever end??? I’ve stopped watching the news reports on TV, the grief and misery are too overwhelming. Before Katrina hit,
the media had billed it hitting New Orleans as having Biblical consequences. And now, seeing all
the footage of fly-overs and eyewitness reports,
it indeed seems Biblical. With water up to the
rooflines, fires out of control, and looters out of control, the situation seems hopeless. I’m sorry to be so negative, because I hope and pray
that New Orleans and the Coast can survive this.
I AM LOOKING FOR PAT & JAY FROM CHALMETTE. ALSO INFOMATION OF THE METAIRIE AREA NEAR VETERANS AND CLEARY AND DIVISION STREETS. ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THE AREA BETWEEN WEST ESPLANADE AND VETERANS. ANYTHING NEAR THE LAKESIDE SHOPPING CENTER. ANY NEWS OR INFORMATION OF FLOODING OR WIND DAMAGE IN THAT AREA WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANKS FOR ALL THE PRAYERS.
OMG!!! What about the wonderful animals at
Audubon Zoo??? Something else to worry about.
Somebody please tell us that the animals are OK.
My prayers and thoughts are with everyone effected by this terrible natural disaster….please contact the Red Cross and donate any amount of money you can….everything will help…
From Venenzuela with love……..
“That government had no evacuation plan, it is incredible, the first power in the world that is so involved in Iraq … and left its own population adrift,” Chavez said in a cabinet meeting broadcast live on television.
His remarks came as U.S. authorities evacuated thousands of people from New Orleans and after Bush said it would take years to recover from flooding caused by Hurricane Katrina.
The death toll on Wednesday reached at least 200 in what Bush called the nation’s worst natural disaster.
“That man, the king of vacations … the king of vacations in his ranch said nothing but, you have to flee, and didn’t say how … that cowboy, the cowboy mentality,” said Chavez, chuckling in a reference to Bush without naming him directly.
_________________________________________________
unfortunately he is right…everything was done right i believe when it came time to announce that people had to evacuate before the hurricane arrived…….they were telling everyone to get out…..and from what i see noone had a plan ready in case of an emergency….In Irak your soldiers are protecting Irak best they can from what you see happening at home in new orleans……remeber when Irak came down?…..remember the looting problem?……feels like deja vu except that in the U.S, when an emergency arises, looting is allowed………the papers claim left and right that the city is basically lawless…..looters chasing people from their home……bus drivers being high jacked…….feels like Irak…isn’t cowboy butch smart??? think he learned anything sitting in kindergarden reading books to kindergarden classes while the towers were under attack….nope….too much knowledge for his pathetic tormented brain…..instead of having these soldiers at home where they are needed he has sent them over to kill people and now that his own people are in a crisis all he talks about is giving money…….maybe people should looking towards a president to govern instead of a daddy’s cowboy…..look at the situation going on people!!!!……..and then go look up the definition of brainwashing………..
Can anyone tell me about the Bareterria-Lompalco blvd area, got friends close by but have not heard from them.
thanks
My husband and I evacuated from Algiers and are safe in Florida. Any news on the Aquarium/Imax animals and sea creatures? Is Jackson Square okay? I have not seen any images of these areas on news coverage. We are returning to help clean up and rebuild as soon as rescue operations are over.
Needless to say, the fact that NOPD officers are looting as well disgusts me…they need to be setting a better example and be a part of the solution instead of part of the problem. (Flip-flops and beauty items are NOT the same thing as food and diapers, there is looting for survival; and then there is just shopping.)
God bless NOLA and all of its lost souls.
I am a native of New Orleans, but live out of state. Check http://www.wdsu.com & http://www.wwl.com for good coverage and useful info. To all the kind hearted, well-wishers - THANK YOU; I LOVE MY BIRTH CITY AND AM CRYING FOR ALL THE VICTIMS AND AFFECTED IN ALL AREAS (LA MS AL). My loved ones will probably be homeless as many, many others…
To UG - I hope you evolve into a compassionate person.
Does anyone have reports/info on 21st Street in Kenner? Bordered by W. Metairie, Williams Blvd., Roosevelt? Level of flooding, neighboorhood damage? Any info appreciated.
Does anyone know about the water level at Bunche Village in Metairie?

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Authorities suspended an evacuation of New Orleans on Thursday after a reported shooting at a U.S. military helicopter………
tHIS HAS TO BE THE MOST PATHETIC PRESIDENT THE UNITED STATES HAS EVER HAD!!!!!
This is totally disgusting, heart wrenching,….he has turned New Orleans into Irak!!!c’mon people !!!! do you realize that people are shooting at the helicopters, overturning ambulances at hospitals trying to evacuate, shooting policemen, you name it , it is happening!! Cowboy Butch went to Irak is is supposedly bringing under control a WHOLE country but can’t evacuate a goddamn city!!!!……I have never dreamed a nightmare as horrific as what I see unfolding!!!just a great big version of what daddy cowboy pulled off with hurricane Andrew…….stand up people, it’s time you took control of your country, and your home.
Here’s a thought……they have trouble controlling the situation in New Orleans…..what would happen if several states were to come under attack at once…….who would help you? the soldiers over in Irak?….
as i was saying……..
“There are lots of different options of getting soldiers back there,” said Cate, who is based in Qatar. “We’re going to do our best to take care of the troops and their families.”
Navy Cmdr. Jeff Breslau, a U.S. 5th Fleet spokesman in Bahrain, said no U.S. warships in the Gulf would be redirected to disaster relief in the Gulf of Mexico, but individual sailors with family emergencies could be granted home leave.
National Guard units called up for rescue work in Louisiana and Mississippi had to make do without members currently deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan.
National Guard troops from Alabama and Wisconsin, along with other law enforcers, were ordered to deal with the shortfall.
Most Americans identify the National Guard with providing emergency services during natural disasters. But over the past three years, numerous Guard units have been sent to Iraq to fight alongside regular forces.
A brigade of roughly 5,000 soldiers from the Louisiana National Guard watched the disaster unfold on television at Camp Liberty, west of Baghdad. The troops are expected to leave Iraq by November, if their deployment is not extended.
maybe if we sent the evacuees to Irak they would be offered more help,,,,,,,,,,
Hi, I
If anyone has any information on New Orleans East/Lake Forest area (Methodist Hospital, Crowder boulevard, Chef Menteur Highway, Gawain Street) please let me know! My friend’s mom, uncle & grandmother are there and we have no way to get in touch with them or find out what is going on.
Email me at onehotbiscuit at hotmail dot com
Thanks!
Please help - I know many people down in New Orleans, around the 6900 block of Chef Menteur Highway. I do not know the relation of this area to most of the ravaged land in LA. Could someone please let me know if he/she is aware of conditions in that part of New Orleans? Phone communication isn’t very helpful right now. Thank you so much! Take care! (and God Bless all who have been affected by this tragedy…)
Anyone know what happened on West Esplanade?
Can anyone let me know about the houses on Vignaud and Ponce De Leon in Mid City between Bayou St. John and Esplanade.
Thanks.
Hey pieraud, since it seems like no one else well say anything…i will….SHUT UP! now is not the time or the place to be talking about Irag(oops…you spell it irak) find a political forum to voice your opinions. From what i have read, most off the people here are trying to use this one for comunication and information about those having to go thru this natural disaster. Maybe if the rest of the world had the balls to stand up for those that are oppressed by their governments, then Americans would not have to be worrying so much about the Sadams and Binladins of the world. Since you seem like you know so much about what is wrong in this world, PLEASE, by all means fix it or SHUT UP.
Having survived hurricane hugo in SC, my sympathy goes out to the ones that are still trapped in the storm area and for those that have love ones there also. I hope things start to improve for you all soon. Our state is and will continue to return the favor that we recieved in our time of need. GOOD LUCK to you all….and GOD BLESS you and keep you safe.
Does anyone have any info or pictures of Park Esplanade at Bayou St. John and esplanade?
My son is still in that building and seems better off than those at the superdome-any suggestions of how to get him out of the city and to Baton Rouge were he can connect with family.
Praying that God will ease the suffering of all those that are living this nightmare. sandramom
I wish to know if any of you could facilitate me with pics of the area of west esplanade, kenner after the hurricane katrina? thank you
I am interested in the area between Camphor and Lafreniere in Metairie…the 70003 zip code. Is there water?
Hi I am in Canada, just got back from New Orleans on the August 16. Am very concerned about friends in Madisonville. Any news about what has and is happening there?
