Latest Damage Reports

Orleans:

  • Levy topped, not breached, at Industrial Canal near Tennessee St. (I think that’s near Holy Cross) on the Chalmette Side of the canal
  • Charity Hospital on emergency power, lots of blown windows
  • The Po-lice on backup power
  • Up to 4 ft. of water on St. Claude near Jackson Barracks
  • 4 pumping stations knocked out by tidal surge. One has been able to resume operation
  • Bridge to parking garage at Memorial hospital reported collapsed (I think this is block or two east of Charity Hospital downtown, and about two blocks north of the Dome, but I’m not positive)

Other areas:

  • Jefferson Parish: Building collapse in 200 block of Wright Ave. in Terrytown (this could be apartments, a car dealership, a clinic, or even part of Oakwood Mall — that’s everything at that corner). People reportedly inside
  • Significant flooding in St. Charles on the east bank
  • Arabi: “We’re telling people to get into the attic and take something with them to cut through the roof if necessary,” said Col. Richard Baumy of the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office. “It’s the same scenario as Betsy.” Up to 8 feet of water there. Baumy said hurricane winds were preventing rescue efforts.
  • Bayou Bienvenue reporting levels at twice normal (9.5 ft.)
  • Fire station in Gramercy has been damaged
  • Power outages everywhere

More conflicting Superdome reports: Water reported pouring in through damage in roof, 2 sections missing, people moved from a section of Dome floor (I thought they weren’t allowed on the floor already because of flooding concerns??? — this whole dome report might be inaccurate) and people moved to the end zone and up into concourses.

Update:

  • Oschner Hospital reports flooding according to WDSU, patients being moved to upper floors.

Update II:

  • East Jefferson Hospital, too, reports water on the first floor.

Up to 4 ft. of water on St. Claude near Jackson Barracks

I am not familiar with the lay-out of New Orleans. Does this mean:

    - a body of water is 4 ft higher than usual?

    - a body of water has risen to 4 ft?

    - a street/neighbourhood has flooded and the waterlevel there is 4 ft over street level?

    keep up the good work,

St Claude is a street. It means that the street’s under four feet of water.

The Times-Picayune is reporting that their building has taken damage and:

“Scanner traffic is busy with calls of rising water, including 18 inches and rising against the levee in the French Quarter. Dispatchers questioning officers on the scene, trying to determine if there is a break in the river levee, or if water is pouring over the top. Independently, NOLA has received a flooding alert for the French Market area.”

My wife’s mother is trapped in a nursing home on Jefferson. Have you heard any reports from that area? It’s quite close to Ochsner and only a one story building.

Has anyone heard from the lakefront in Mandeville?

  8. Joe B. (unregistered) August 29th, 2005 10:20 am

Steven: I”m in Columbus, MS. I’m following from work as best I can on the web. I’m just going from site to site to site collecting the most significant bits and dropping in what I know about where things are.

Matt: I’ve got one grandmother in a nursing facility on the West Bank, so I can sympathize. I would expect that if they’re close to Oschner that they probably have made arrangements to move upwards there…hospitals weren’t part of any mandatory evacuation that I’ve heard in Orleans and Jefferson. I would think that ANY one-story facility like that would have emergency arrangements with nearby facilities. I know that some facilities in the metro area did evacuate to B.R. on Sat.

I talked to my nephew at 8am this morning and he is trying to weather out the storm in a 3 story building near the corner of St. Charles and St. Marys. I see above that there is significant flooding on the east side of St. Charles, does anyone know how bad it is? Thank you in advance for any info.

Memorial Hospital (where the pedestrian bridge from the parking lot to the hospital reportedly collapsed) is uptown, on Napoleon Ave, between Freret Street and Claiborne Ave. This is about a mile downtown from the Tulane and Loyola campuses.

It’s the only news from the uptown area that I’ve seen so far.

  12. Joe B. (unregistered) August 29th, 2005 10:47 am

Harald: The above note referenced St. Charles Parish, not St. Charles Street. Sorry about the confusion.

The report about Memorial Hospital’s (used to be called “Southern Baptist Hospital”) walkway is incorrect, per a spokesman at Memorial, quoted at

    http://www.nola.com/newslogs/breakingtp/

For those looking for news from Uptown, this is the most info on flooding I’ve seen. I’m familiar with the area and own (perhaps “used to own” is now more accurate) a house two blocks away. As I recall, the hospital is raised up quite a bit, so that flooding to the top steps would probably be significant; but my recollection may not be accurate on that point. That area happens to be one of the lowest points in NOLA. Worst flooding I’ve ever had at my house there was about 4 feet (before they redid the pumps/canals under Napoleon Ave a few years back. That brought the water up to the floor of my house (built on brick pilings). During that flood, they were bringing paitents to the hospital by boat.

    Here’s what the link says:

“Memorial suffers damage, but no collapsed walkway

Responding to earlier reports that a walkway from a parking garage to the hospital had collapsed during he heaviest part of the hurricane, a spokeswoman for Memorial Medical in New Orleans said that some windows had been blown out, but there was no collapsed walkway.

Sandra Cordray, the spokeswoman, said several windows on the north side of the second and third floors were blown out, and that floodwaters had lapped at the top step of the hospital on Napoleon Avenue near Claiborne.

But, she said, none of the mishaps required patients to be relocated and there were no injuries.

Cordray also said that contrary to an earlier report by city officials, there was no collapse of the walkway linking the hospital to a parking garage.

    To all:

I’m posting this on several sites for anyone looking for information or conditions on people staying at the Hyatt, near the Superdome:

A family member living in New Orleans made contact with his family in Charlotte, NC, from his cellphone which unbelievably worked a short period of time this afternoon. He was indeed at the Hyatt where all the windows were blown out, including the windows in his room. He stated people were relocated to the main ballroom during the storm, but could now go back and forth to their room to get things, from what I understand. They were originally going to feed them (3)meals a day but had to ration the meals to (2), as of 8/29 mid-afternoon. So anyone who is looking for an update on friends or family staying at the Hyatt near the Superdome, the outcome so far is good.

Any news out of Carolyn Park? I have heard there is high water in St. Bernard but information seems sparse (understandably so) even at nola.com.

Best to all you live in the area. Good luck!

Everyone looking for specific info may also want to check out the nola.com and wwltv.com forums. I’ve found the mix of these three sites to have pretty good info, considering how crappy the info is otherwise. Warning: You may want to stay away from Mayor Nagin’s unbelievably fatalistic interview on WWL that everyone is recommending. This is a really bad situation, as we all know, but his assessment is positively terrifying to anyone who’d hear it. Not what I’d typically hope for from a mayor. Good luck to all and thanks to everyone for getting info out to those of us away from our fair city!

Gretchen Borgstede: If they stayed put at that address, they’re cool; that’s one of the highest elevations in the city, a couple of feet above sea level; unless the levee on the RIVER failed (& there are no indications of that), it’s as safe a place as there is in southern Louisiana.

To anyone concerned. My sister is a nurse in New Orleans. She lives in Mandeville but came back into New Orleans to stay at her job-hospital to work and help the people. She works at West Jefferson Medical in Marrero. I’ve been able to talk to her twice. Once last night (29th) at 10pm and again just now (30th) 11 pm. She has to use different phones to call me cos she has problems getting Anyone on her cell phone. I live in Wisconsin. She can get thru to me but NOT to her home in Mandeville which is where my father and sister and nephew had to weather the hurricane out. (They couldn’t get out).

Per my sister…West Jefferson Medical Hospital is the safest hospital in that area. The other hospitals…Jeffeson, Charity and I think Toulou were being evacuated due to water, no generator, etc. (This info is even on the net site–see the other above messages for the url). Anyway, she says their generator is still working, they are well supplied, they have lights, and surgeries are still taking place. She is extremely worried (as I am) about our father in Mandeville. Although she’s heard rumors from different sources within the hospital that Mandeville is fine. Only has alot of down trees, and the power grid is gone–thus no phones or electricity. Neither she nor I have heard of any houses being destroyed there. Therefore, we are praying (still) that our father is okay and that their house, 23330 Elm Street Mandeville just off of Hwy 1088 and close to the south side of Hwy 12, is still ok. They do not live right in the town but in the country. We can’t be 100 % sure but it gives our nerves a break.
I’ve been calling lots of places and putting his address out on the net with hopes that someone can tell me anything new. I have his name and address on the Red Cross list in Milwaukee WI with hopes that they can get thru to the Red Cross in LA. and pass his name (along with a ton of other names they had piled on their desk).
I do know that St. Tammany Parish is closed to everyone mostly because of the power lines. News on Slidel is also on that website.

So, to the people that wanna know about Mandeville…that’s what I know for fact.

The rest I get off the weather channel here in Wisconsin and the MSNBC online and from this website.
Thank you for this website…whoever U R in MS.

I understand the Governor has ordered all “refugees” out of the city. Where the hell are they supposed to go, there are tens of thousands, with no food, no water, no sanitation, pregnant women and babies, elderly and about everything else! Why is a tent city not being set up in a dryer and higher area like andrew, many people are shocked and injured. And now I read on yahoo that sharks are prowling thru the flood waters. That Governor had plenty of warning to get the poor out before this hit! school is not yet started and people could have been bused to safety and sheltered. I truly feel for these people and my prayers go out to all.

  131. Georgia Peach (unregistered) August 31st, 2005 11:55 am

This is one of the few emails that came out of New Orleans from a nurse stuck at a hospital working!!!! God Help these people!~~~

this is quick, don’t know how much longer we have use of computer, so will be short and sweet with update. Things are really really bad. Beyond imagination. Please call our governor, congressman, state officials. whoever - we are not getting what we need (patients). The water is rising and quickly. We have been locked down now for 4-5 hours because of rioting , people trying to escape the swimming waters. People who are thirsty and hungry. The looting is way out of control, all the wal-marts broken into and guns stolen…imasgine that. Anyway - they are now talking it may be days until we are out and this is not acceptable.
These patients are sick and cannot stay here much longer. water is still being rationed. Food- not much of it, It’s so hot, who cares about eating. Finally that diet I been wanting to go on!!!!!!!!!!!

But anyway, they told us the Military police and national guard were coming in and guess what , no one can find them. Our cars are being robbed as we speak , and yes cars can be replaced but not my baby pictures, videos, and “important papers”. It’s just so surreal…..

One of the looters shot a policeman in the head this afternoon.

Everything is under water. They say our Mayor just came on the new to say they would be breaking the levee and that the city can expect 9 feet of water more… We did have 2 girls that this morning knew their homes were ok (minimal damage) and now they are completely submerged.
I still haven’t heard from anyone about my house - but told it’s pretty bad. Anyway - the good thing is that we have 8 floors to climb if need be, and hopefully - someone will see us on the roof. I have heard thehy have some 70,000 people on rooftops that they are trying to rescue - and no one knows how many bodies are floating….
    - safe and dry. .

Thank you to each of you for your thoughts and prayers. But please take a minute to call someone to ask for more assistance for us. We are at Memorial Medical Center
    2700 Napoleon Avenue
    New Orleans, Louisiana 70115
    504-897-4530

!!!!!One of the nurses husbands is here - he is a lawyer, made some calls and the hospital association just called for him to speak of his e-mail about our problems - so help may be coming.

I will be in touch - the plan is to evacuate the sickest first then families, then us. They will pick us up in helicopter, fly to where there’s no water and drop us off. Supposedly red cross will have cars for us to bring us to a shelter, then we are on our own - but that’s not a problem. I will be calling one of you, somewhere………..to please come and get me with a cold diet coke !!!!

well , now the little air they had for our bone marrow patients is literally hot air… keeps getting better and better.

    no more complaining………………

Hugs , Kisses to all of you. I love all of you , and can’t thank you enough.

Prelim reports are that most of marrero is AOK. Shingle damage and the like. Very little flooding, especially in the Ames, Barataria, Louis I, Ehret area. Lafitte sounds as if it’s gone. St bernard and Chalmette, water up to the roof tops. Westwego had a tornado, as did the Oakwood mall. Hope you didn’t like to shop, because it’s supposedly gone.

    Hello,

My family and I residing in New York are anxiously awaiting some word from relatives residing in Madisonville, LA. Their names are Cindy and Bobby Trabeaux and they were last heard from the evening before Katrina hit shore.

Any word regarding the damage incurred in this area would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

I am looking for information on the conditions in Arabi, La. and Harvey, La. Did these two areas flood? Were the homes damaged badly? Trying to locate Rosa, Joe & Valarie Martin, their daughter Dennise & her family.

Re: my post 8/30/05 Bob Habans from Slidell, Eden Isles, is alive and ok. He tells us houses in Eden-Isles had 3 feet or more of water in them, and a commercial building in Slidell is probably completely destroyed.
