The French Quarter is Alright

“French Quarter Battered but Unbowed”

“In the courtyard behind the 278-year-old Cathedral St. Louis, two massive oaks toppled, their roots pulling up a 30-foot section of iron fence. Carrie Hanselman marveled at how the branches straddled a marble statue of Jesus Christ but, miraculously, knocked off only the thumb and forefinger on its outstretched left hand.”

Will that creepy shadow on the cathedral ever be the same?

Hopefully statue restoration wont be a priority in the coming months.

I’m relieved that NO wasn’t hit as violently as predicted, but I know you all are in for a long recovery and clean up. My heart goes out to everyone who is having to sit tight, out of town, not knowing what the real situation is you’ll have to deal with.

Just get through this my friends.

    Love from Seattle

Everyone please watch Nagin’s interview late this evening on WWL to get a sense of the specifics and magnitude of what is to come, from pumps to road and levee damage, etc, etc. It just goes on and on for 20 minutes and is better info than anything that has come across the news — straight from the source, as it were.

At around 1:30-2AM CNN finally picked up on the mention of the levee breach on the 17th st canal and went live with the Tulane hospital evacs that Nagin mentioned in his interview — maybe they (CNN) finally watched and/or aired it(relying on web only here).

Absolute apocalypse now that the lake water is advancing on downtown…

There’s clearly been something of a news blackout going on tv and tv station websites…either due to lack of info or purposefully to head off a general panic. People who have been watching WDSU and WWL streaming since this afternoon know the full magnitude, but there’s no corresponding reports to match the pictures from mainstream media sources. It’s absolutely epic and maybe the gov’t simply doesn’t want 1 million people to panic.

I too saw Nagin’s interview - but why isn’t anyone holding to account for the delay in ordering an evcuation? Or his failure to provide trapwsortoing for the peole who could not affrod to leave by themselves? I just posted a summary of my comments of the past few days on how his performance looks to those not in New Orleans.

Can anyone comment on how many feet of water is on Bourbon Street,in the middle of the french quarter? My house is in the quarter. Is it still going up? What is expected max if any? What about the residential looting? Any national guard presence guarding the quarter? Don’t have high hopes after seeing TV and the project activity across the street from the quarter. Dr. Bob

My good friends live uptown on Freret street. I feel so lucky that they are safe in Texas but am wondering:
    1) is it still dry uptown?
    2) where is the looting taking place?
    3) is the neighborhood being guarded from looting?
I am sure national guard is preoccupied with saving lives, as they should be but at the same time I hope my good friends will have a home to return to eventually.

    thnx

The pictures on tv are overwhelming to me. I love New Orleans, and am damn depressed that this happened. It is beyond my imagination the grief and sense of loss you all must be experiencing. I hope the National Treasure that is New Orleans will be restored as soon as possible.

Looters wading thru toxic water to get a new TV or appliance will reap the benefits of thier stupid acts. Doing the right thing when no one is watching is called “character”.

First comment I would like to post is reguarding the statement from the appearently foriegn individual that said “Good for you!!!!!!! You stupid ass Americans!!”- Other human beings pain, hardships, losses, suffering, and heartbreak are no benefit to anyone. It is a shame that there are people rejoicing in this tragedy and taking advantage of a horrible situation, by stealing goods- that will not aide them in survival during this time from closed businesses. It is heart breaking that innocent people, and volunteers are being made targets of misplaced anger. What could it possibly help to injury another individual? What logic is used by these people? Keeping help out of New Orleans? Left as it is, the area will be lost, filled with disease and death, so what good comes from this violence?
I’m not a highly religous person, but I do hope they find peace, and come to their sences.

Thanks so much, and my prayers are with all of New Orleans and it’s people.

I am so very angry at this administration and the open racism that is being displayed by our government and so called leader. If this was any other area where there lighter complexion people lived, help would have not been a question, well organized, and immediate. But because this involved mostly African-Americans, there was nothing done immediately and the only reports the media wanted to display was the negative and anything else to make the situation worse. You know, how dumb can this administration and media be!! To be objective is one thing and patronizing is another and both we don’t want. Just take time to put yourself in this situation, just one short thought. You would steal for shoes, water, food, boat, clothes and another items to LIVE. In any society there are people who may have an elevator that stops short but don’t demoralize the many who just want to live. Common sense and natural human instinct does not come in any color….To this administration and many others who have the same view… God does take care of His own!!!!!

proof that white people still claim superiority over black people. proof that the poor of this nation will always pay more than the rich. proof that the morality that we hold onto so tight is nothing more than an excuse to exert power around the world.

What has happened? Why the wait? Are these people not Americans! It is time to question our nation’s overextension in Iraq. It is time to have a nationwide discussion about the Administration’s incompetence! Get these Americans out of harms way! Get someone, ANYONE in the white house that can run this country! Lord be with the people of New Orleans…..

I want to try to file for unemployment, (which I have never done) in Florida. I was a nurse in New Orleans and my hospital is under water. Can ayone tell me if it is possible to apply in FLA? I was a new employee but working as a nurse prior to this in New Orleans. I am of course going to look for a job but don’t have a FLA license and that will take time!
