“We’re talking about an east bank event rather than a West Bank event.”
Observers in City Hall are reporting broken windows in buildings up and down Loyola Ave., including the Amoco Building, which is right across the street from them.
The Coast Guard says they’ve gotten calls from vessels in in Southeast Louisiana as well as people who can’t get through on 911 lines (probably because they’re still down) with reports of people on roofs at Villere and Louisa streets and on Almonaster Drive. Those calls are going to local law enforcement via the Coast Guard because the Coast Guard can’t respond to those calls, yet.
Walter Maestri, the Emergency Management Director for Jeff. Parish, said they still can’t get out to verify reports of flooding. (as of about 8:45 am)
There’s reports of a building collapse on Manhattan Boulevard (West Bank — this area has been built up a lot in just the last two years, no indication what block it might be, but large apartment complexes and retail shopping centers are all along the main stretch between Lapalco and the Expressway) and a roof being blown off an apartment building at S. Judah and Ames Blvd. on the West Bank.
Maestri said, “Right now, the east bank calls are outrunning the West Bank calls by 3 to 1,” he said.
Flooding in Lincoln Manor in Kenner (I think this is one of the more notorious Kenner flood-prone locations)
Breach of a levee reported by officials near East Jefferson Hospital. “The word we get is that it is not a break but must be spray from tidal surge that has overtopped the levees,” he said.
The East Jefferson Levee District confirms water had breached sand bags on Airline Drive at the St. Charles Parish-Kenner line. “They tried then to drive all the levees but were just could not,” he said of levee district workers.
Maestri warned we might get hurricane force winds until 2 p.m. and tropical storm force winds until 7 p.m. The storm track likely means flooding will be worst on the East Bank of Jefferson Parish.
National Weather Service has reported 12-15 foot waves in Lake Pontchartrain.
Storm downgraded to Category 3, landfall in Gulfport. Boats reported in buildings in Gulfport.
The National Hurricane Center downgraded storm surge predictions for New Orleans to 15 feet from the earlier 28 feet projection. Still enough for severe flooding. That was about 9:45am, so I expect we’ll get solid info on how severe the flooding is city-wide soon. Although I think winds have to drop below 60 mph before they’ll send out any crews, so potentially that could be another 9 hours according to Maestri, but more likely 4 or 5 hours if the storm keeps up its pace.
Hopefully we won’t get smacked too hard by the remnants here in Columbus. But, it’ll be the third hurricane after-effects we’ve gotten this year already, so hopefully there’s not too much left to blow down.

Good luck, guys. I hope things calm down and you’re all safe.
Has anyone heard anything specifically about the quarter?
Hey,
good luck to You in your beautiful city.
Thumbs up and the best for You from Germany.

for Louisiana, my home away from home.
thoughts and prayers are with all.
Where’re y’all getting news from out of curiosity or is this all word of mouth early speculation because they haven’t been able to send anyone out yet? Any general info is good, Uptown specifically would be spectacular (hoping very much that my apartment is still in one piece).
Does anyone know the condition of the Hyatt across from the Superdome in New Orleans? Have family staying there…looked like windows were blown out…..
Does anyone have information on the Metaire Golf Course and the homes surronding it specific to flooding?
I am praying for the most wonderful, historical place I know! I grew up in Louisiana, and hope it remains intact. It must be working, the storm lost energy, and hit as a category 4. I will keep up the prayers!
From what I’ve gathered, places East of NO suffered the worst impact, but I think that ‘worst’ is relative at this point.
I posted hopeful emails based on news reports received in the Northeast, but I don’t think we’ll know the true extent until helicopters can get in the air.
As for the Hyatt, I know the building and there were windows blown out. But based on the pictures I’ve seen, it looks like the building held up.
Update: WDSU, from LA, is reporting that East NO is underwater.
Catherine, thank you so much for the reponse on the Hyatt…anxious family here sitting in Charlotte, NC wondering about loved ones staying there. We appreciate the response!
Firefly: thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Good luck, positive thoughts, and let us know how things fared. I’ve been flicking the remote through Weather Channel, MSNBC, CNN, and Fox, the networks and other than windows blown out at the Hyatt, as well as other hotels, there has been NO reports of serious damage to any high-rise hotels.
To continue update, there have been Internet reports of flooding in New Orleans, though no pictures and they don’t seem to be in the area of the Superdome. Firefly - your family is in a place close to the Superdome and based on some of the pictures of that facility, I think that they are coming from the Hyatt (not sure though). What I can say is that the focus on New Orleans is the flooding and the Superdome. Your family is close to the Superdome. Although you are anxious for news of their safety, if in the reports of the Superdome, the Hyatt ISN’T mentioned (aside from the blown out windows that have already occurred), no news is good news. Not completely comforting, but overall reassuring. Good luck and will post if other information is available.
Hey Phil.. Are you out there? - Nadine
Can someone PLEASE give me an update as to what the damage looks like in Slidell?? My family lives in the Lake Village subdivision but we are unable to find anyone with any info. Please help!! Thank you!
Catherine,
You are too kind! Stefan made contact with family in Charlotte, NC, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, from his cellphone, which unbelievably worked a short period of time this afternoon. He was indeed at the Hyatt where all the windows were blown out, including the windows in his room. They were relocated to the main ballroom during the storm, but could now go back and forth to their room to get things, from what I understand. They were originally going to feed them (3) meals a day but had to ration the meals to (2). Everyone is fine….so anyone who is looking for an update on friends or family staying at the Hyatt near the Superdome, the outcome so far is good. Thanks for your updates as well, Catherine!
Firefly: GREAT NEWS - YIPPEE. Please read below…
Lori: I looked on a map of LA and Slidell looks like it is North of NO and the Lake - that’s good!! (I knew Slidell was a ’suburb’ but didn’t know where it was.) It looks like it is in St. Tammany Parish, where there have been NO reports of flooding from the Lake. Like Firefly, you may hear from your loved ones via cell phone. Thoughts and prayers go to you and your family. Watching news reports is very scary, but I can say (as is the quote) in the wake of this type of disaster, no news is good news. I know that the focus is on New Orleans and that information about the surrounding communities is sparse, but The Weather Channel has a person stationed north of the Lake and I (opinion) would rely on his reports of the situation.
Firefly: again - glad to hear the good news. Hope we hear the same from Lori!
From past natural disasters - they got through the impact, now they deal with the aftermath, here’s some ‘thoughts:’
1) Have them call once daily at a set time. You may have more information than they do (due to lack of information available on the ground).
2) They should turn their cell phone OFF when they are not calling. It preserves the battery.
3) They should only call ONE person/household. That person/household is the communication center.
4) Heed the local officials advice
Good luck and godspeed their return, as well as the revival of the entire Gulf Community!
I’ll continue to post on this blog as information becomes available.
As we found out Sunday morning that the hurricane was going to hit, our church prayed for the people of New Orleans especially, and everyone else who might be affected by Katrina. We prayed that God would turn this storm away from that low-lying city. We feel it was the hand of the Lord that slowed down and turned this powerful hurricane. It could have been so much worse, but God can do miracles! There was still so much damage, and we hope that you all will be able to get the help you need to get back on your feet! May God especially bless the people of Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi, as well as Florida at this time, and may they all be able to get back home soon! From your friends in Indiana….MM
I have an 11 year old grandaughter living in Gretna on Wall Boulevard. I havent heard from her and wondered if anyone knows how bad that area got hit. Thank you Sandy
David: I looked up the Metairie Golf Course and that area is SOUTH of the Lake. That area, according to the map, falls within Jefferson Parish. According to news reports, that parish was hard hit and severely flooded. I wish I had better news to report. I hope your loved ones are well and thoughts and prayers are with both them and you.
Nadine: where is Paul?
I’m located in the NorthEast and would be willing to provide any news that I can.
Sandy: Please provide more details about Wall Blvd. I don’t recognize the name. Would love to help with information but need more from you to provide.
Sandy: Just found it - see information to David regarding Metairie. Please let us know how all has fared. Thoughts are with you tonight as well!
Tips on Searching/Information
I know that many are looking to this board for information about areas that their loved ones are in. Here is a big tip:
If your loved one is located in a town that is NOT a ‘major’ city, determine what county/parish they are in. LA is separated into parishes, the rest of the states (I think) are separated into counties. Though there are differences, for this situation, don’t worry about the politics. If a family member is in LA, search for the town they are in relation to the parish. If in other places, search for the town in relation to the county. Figure out the county and that will tell you the situation. The news reports will be based on parishes/counties for areas other than the ‘big’ city.
In the ‘big’ city, there are maps available online that will help you. News crews will always give you a landmark and you can search it from there. Given what you see on TV and the location, it will help you know the situation. For example, if they say they are at ‘X’ hotel in ‘x’ city, look it up on the Internet and find out the address. Given the maps that come up, and the addresses from your loved ones, you can gauge the impact in that area based on what is reported from the hotel.
On a personal note, I am not demeaning the ‘big’ city from the outlying areas. Unfortunately, that’s the way the news media presents it and that’s how you have to decipher it.
Hope this helps!
Can anyone provide information about the Tall Timbers area near Brechtel Park. Cross street area is Gen Degaulle and Lennox. Our son and family live in that area.
Does anyone have any information about how bad the damage is in the English Turn subdivision?
I am in Pensacola, florida and we have a friend from terrytown area - he ran from storm and he has no idea what damage that area has
please resond
thanks
Good Evening!
I looked up Tall Timbers, English Turn, and Terrytown. Here’s what I can tell based on reports on the parish they reside:
Tall Timbers: Watch The Weather Channel. It looks, based on maps, that it’s close to Jefferson Parish. Jefferson is flooded and there are reports of much devastation. The Weather Channel had (I don’t know if they still do) a reporter in Mandeville, which appears to be close to the Tall Timbers area.
English Turn: Appears to be in Plaquerines Parish which has not reported on flooding or damage. Again, for news, focus on the parish and gauge the conditions based on those reports.
Terrytown: Looks to be in Jefferson Parish which has reported significant flooding.
I really hope all of those in these areas are ok. Reports are coming in from the parishes (similiar to counties) of LA. You may not hear from loved ones for a day or two. There is significant information available. Here are guides for interpretation (but without first hand/helicopter it is a guideline):
1) What is the parish (LA) or county (other states)?
2) What has been reported (news networks) in areas around/within that community?
3) Is that community East, West, North, or South from what you see on news reports?
In LA, there have been reports from the Superdome, French Quarter, Slidell, and Jefferson Parish, North of the Lake, etc. See where the community is in relation.
The Gulf Coast was hit hard and thoughts are with all affected.
I regret to report the following:
According to the weather channel, the following in the area of Biloxi have been severely damaged or destroyed:
1) US 90: Olive Garden and another restaurant completely destroyed.
2) St. Thomas Church is severely damaged/destroyed.
According to CNN, areas 18 miles East of Biloxi are flooded and there is severe damage.
According to CNN, at least 55 people are reported dead in Gulfport.
According to CNN, areas East of New Orleans are devastated. There are people on rooftops who are asking for help, but help can’t reach them at this time due to weather and related conditions.
Water is rising in the areas around New Orleans, but nothing has been said on CNN about water in New Orleans.
According to CNN, LA has boats out in these areas, and the people in the boats are doing their best to reach all those who need.
According to Jeanne Meserve on CNN 75 people in LA were rescued in boats in an area of 10 blocks, but she doesn’t know the area. The area still hasn’t been disclosed.
CNN has a 2 hour ’special’ dealing with areas affected by Katrina. This may be a source of information.
Information is based on reports from the Weather Channel and CNN.
Thoughts are with those tonight.
Am looking for any info on the city of Lafitte LA in lower Jefferson Parish. We fled our home there-@30 miles southeast of New Orleans near Barataria Bay. Does any body have any news of that area?
Does anyone know about the Belle Meade / Timberlane area…Flooded not..??? Have family there but have not heard.>Any info is appreciated…
So how is the West Bank? I’m sending this from Japan and a bit concerned about family and friends back home. Is the Gretna area above water?
Cathy: News reports from Jefferson Parish are not good. Apparently, there are areas that are under 30 feet of water and people are being rescued from rooftops. Right now, there are not many reports containing specifics. I’m sorry for bearing the bad news of the moment.
I think that once the morning comes, you will have a better idea of the situation. If I hear anything more, I’ll post.
DAVID and CHRIS, I’m looking for information regarding your inquiries and will post as soon as I know.
I am also wondering about the westbank? I have loved ones in Westwego.
David: I need more information from you in order to provide information. Please give zip code, if known, or any area landmarks.
Chris: Regarding the West Bank: it looks to be in an ‘iffy’ area. Given the locale and the news reports, it’s hard to gauge whether it was in an area that was affected by a levee break. I know you want an answer. I’m sorry I can’t help - maybe they will have one in the morning.
Just many Prayers for the Good folks of La. Miss Ala as well as Fla for health and well being of all the good people from them states from your brothers and sisters here in Texas…Godspeed God Bless You All
CHRIS, I just saw AMANDA’s message and it appears you are both asking about Jefferson Parish. That area was very badly hit. There are reports of people being rescued off rooftops.
The news reports are not describing specifics, and I don’t think they will until daylight. CNN seems to be providing the best ‘nighttime’ coverage, but they aren’t talking real specifics. Again, you can gauge the damage based on areas/landmarks they discuss.
I keep saying it, and I really mean it, thoughts and prayers go out to you and your loved ones.
To Fred about Tall Timbers near Brechtel Park, it’s Orleans Parish in the city of Algiers. I am also in need of info. Most of what I see on TV is “N.O.” though I think news writers are lumping parishes together. I fear tomorrow more than even today.
Does anyone have information about Madisonville, La. I live near I-12 on Brewster road and have not been able to get any information about this area. I would appreciate anythin you have. Thank you.
God Bless all who had to indure the storm!
My thoughts and prayers are with you all!

Melbourne, Australia
Catherine and Sarah, thanks for the info. Guess we’ll wait another few days before trying to bring help.
Thanks Catherine for responding, maybe tomorrow we will have more news.Keeping everyone close in my prayers.
From what I can gather, the eighth and ninth wards are pretty much flooded to at least the first floor all the way from the lake to the river. Anyone know for sure? Has anyone made it into or out of the lower ninth or talked to someone who has?
Does anyone have information on the area close to Audubon Park?
LINDA: There is a Weather Channel crew in the area of Madisonville (Covington). While I don’t know specifics, they seemed to have fared well. You may want to watch that channel for information.
ANGELA: Sorry for the name mixup.
LISA: nothing on Audubon Park.
I just heard a disturbing report on CNN. They are estimating that 1000-2000 people may be dead in the NO area. This is NOT confirmed. They don’t know WHO evacuated and who did not and therefore they can’t say how many deaths may have occurred.
GINA: I’m sorry to report that most news channels are stating that the 9th ward did not fare well. Again, there are no real specifics and most likely, more will be known in the morning.
This is Chris in Japan. Thanks to all for the responses and prayers. I’ll be checking back in a few hours.
And yes Gretna is in Jefferson Parish. I know my family got out but I’m still very worried about all who may not have.
Thanks again.
CNN just reported that there was a major levee break (2 blocks). Tulane University Hospital is considering evacuating all patients and Charity Hospital has already begun evacuating patients. Apparently this levee holds back the Lake and it has now been breached.
I am looking for information regarding the West Bank area near Gen DeGaulle/General Collins area. The house is in the 1600 block of Gen Collins and less than a block from the Mississippi River levee and about a mile or 2 from the bridge. Any confirmations out there if okay or flooded?
ANDREW: The West Bank is in one of those ‘iffy’ areas. The reports from Jefferson Parish have not been good. Also, there has been a major levee breach in New Orleans which hospitals are either doing/considering evacuations.
Scratch: CNN just reported that both hospitals in downtown New Orleans will be evacuated. Tulane Hospital is surrounded by 6 feet of water.
Good night and God bless!
I escaped from Marrero before the hurricane hit. Has anybody heard how the flooding is in that area near the hospital and the canal?
Does anyone know the flooding condtions in St Charles Parish? Specifically Norco on the East Bank and Luling on the West Bank. Thanks
Any news about Tulane University area?
Does anyone have an update on the situation in the Mandevillle/Covington area (Tamany Parish)? We have had no contact with family that live down there as cell service and phone seem to be down. Any info would be appreciated!
Thanks, Jen
CATHERINE-Thank you so much for the info and the prayers. Even if we have nothing left to go back to, myself and my kids got out and that is what is important. Like I told my kids–we can always start over. God will take care of us and all others who don’t just give up. You must have faith to perservere!
Again, thank you for all you have done and are doing!

FoxNews just reporting that N.O. is 80% flooded due to levee break…Martial Law has been issued there…Hospitals are,I believe, being evacutated but not 100% sure I will add to the blog as news trickle into Fox… My Thoughts & Prayers with You all…

I am Alan Burd from central Kentucky. Good luck guys with this catastrophic event with Hurricane Katrina. This is turning out to be a storm of biblical proportions! My family is returning to N.O. from Baton Rouge today. How is River Ridge and Algiers faring? I’ve been trying to watch the live web-feed for WDSU; but can’t while I am at work. Not getting much done either I must say, as I am very concerned and worried about my mother and my brothers and their families.
I have family that were unable to leave in time in Bogalusa, Lillian Parish, the Enman family. Does anyone have word from that Parish?
Thank you all so much, our prayers are with you.
Folks looking for info… if you go to Yahoo’s news site and look through their news photo section you may find what you’re looking for. There are photos there of town signs and road signs in the flooding.
Many people are asking about Slidell, it is flooded - one picture had the town’s “welcome to slidell” sign in it and there were people floating by it in a boat.
Also Yahoo news has the latest headlines from multiple sources; news now is that New Orleans is slowly filling up with water that has breached the levee from Lake Ponchatrain to the north. The mayor says 80 percent of the city is flooded and in some places it’s 20 feet deep - and the water is rising. There are dead floating in the streets and people trapped in their attics that do not have tools to break through to get to the roof above. Todays’s paper, which was only published electronically, shows widespread looting.
MANY people who have boats are out helping people in their communities get to higher ground. Although the official help can’t get through yet, the townspeople are helping each other.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
Hello!
I just watched a press conference on CNN with the LA governor. While no one in the Superdome is in danger, they are considering plans to evacuate the Superdome.
Additionally, CNN has reported that Biloxi has stated that there are hundreds who did not survive.
I hope all of you with loved ones in the area receive good news. CNN is rehashing the press conference with the LA gov.
I live in Westwego, and I am getting different reports of damage to my area. Mayor Billiot says that the people of Wego will be devastated, yet I have a personal account of someone I know that is saying we have no water on the streets? Can anyone clear up the confusion?
Thanks
The Governor of La. has just issued a mandatory evacuation in NO…There was word that they thought the water was leaking from the ground they were trying to pin point where it was leaking from, it is about 80% or more flooded there according to Foxnews Shepard Smith also the SuperDome is flooding and the people who took refuge there need to be evacuated
only problem I believe they stated there was only on road outta the city……My Prayers and Wishes are that poeple in La. as well as Ms, Ala and of course Fla and the rest who have suffered from this that THe LORD keep you all safe…
DANIEL: ABC is reporting the same situation.
Thoughts and prayers go out to all affected.
Hello.
It’s difficult for anyone to assess what the situation is on the ground. Communications are skant, at best. Where the news crews are is where they can report from (NO, Gulfport, Biloxi, etc.). The reporters in those areas are just as trapped as the residents.
Right now, most things will be at a community level. What’s happening at one area of the community may not be happening in another. I suspect that we won’t know the true effect for at least a week.
We live in CA. and have not had a word from my husband’s 2 brothers and families!!!!! They did not evacuate. Both sets live in 1 story homes - 1 on Amelia in Gretna and the other members on Lafayette in Gretna. Does anyone know anything????? Thank you! Dianne
Can anybody tell us about 5th St. in Slidell near the Amtrak, across from the middle school?
I did hear from my loved one today him and his family are safe.I pray for everyone out there and those who have loved ones.He is also from Westwego and he told me he didn’t think Westwego was hit as hard with flooding but he may not be sure. The phone call had to be quick because others were waiting I thank God he got to call me.God bless everyone.
Would like to have any information on the West Bank area around New Orleans. In the Terrytown Gretna area. Keep getting different reports of floding in that area.
Thank you for your help. Just want to know if I have a home to go back to.

I’ve supplied as much information as I know. My thoughts & prayers go out to all affected & to all out there working very hard to rescue all stranded. Also may God Blees them all & those helping the ones that had to evacuate. Thank you in advance, Kevin
I too am still looking for west bank/algiers info. The house phone rings and rings - but no answer. A good sign? The cell has the standard cannot complete the call message.
You know one of the sad things here is that we all seem to be looking for someone, something or some place. Unfortunately no one has the answers - only more questions. It continues….
I live in Rockingham, NC and I’d like for everyone to know my prayers are with you all. I have family in Louisiana and Alabama also. Hugs to everyone and I hope you all hear good news soon.
WEST BANK INFO: Hi my name is Crystal and we ecacuated on friday night before it got to bad. I have an apartment at Forest Isle off General De Gualle. Go to ForestIsle.com and their web site is posting as much info about the apartment and surrounding area as they can. Hope everyone is doing well.
I am a US Army Soldier stationed in South Korea. I am trying to find out about Burris, Port Sulphur, and Marrero area.
my email is stanley.vinetjr@us.army.mil
According to several news agencies (CNN, Fox, Local), they are moving the people in the Superdome to the Astrodome in Houston. This will start today and they are transporting by bus.
According to a poster from Houston on another blog, the city is preparing for this, right down to making plans to open up their schools for the kids to receive education.
Although a short-term solution, I think it’s great that finally we are hearing about solutions instead of problems. While more permanent ones will need to be put in place, this situation calls for focusing on the short-term (survival and initial recovery) and once people are in a safe place, looking towards the long-term.
Thanks Houston for stepping up and good luck!
I am looking for any word on the status of Bogalusa, Louisiana. I have family there. No communication whatsoever, no word. Please help.
Looking for a patient who was in Tulane University Hospital. Any information on how to locate him would be appreciated.
What is going on in Kenner. I haven’t seen any pictures of my neighborhood. What is going on? I live north of W. Esplanade near Williams. I know it is flooded by how many feet should I expect in my house. I have heard 12 feet of water, is that correct? Why don’t they show that on the news if that is right? Where are the pictures showing us and our pain?
Has anyone heard anything about Gretna, Marerro, Buras, Empire or any area off Hwy. 23? I’m terribly worried.
I have family in Bogulas as well and the last time I heard from there was on Sunday evening. Did they get hit by Katrina? They weren’t expecting to from my last conversation with them. The lines are down and the cell phones are not operational. Let me know if you’ve heard anything. God bless us all!
My heartfelt prayers are being sent to everyone in New Orleans.I’m praying for all the family members out there waiting to hear from your loved ones I pray that your families are safe.It is a very helpless feeling being so far away but all we can do is pray and have faith in God that He will keep those safe and restore.God bless.
I just got off the phone with a friend in Algiers. He said that the west bank did good. What flooding that did happen on the WB was minimal. So maybe thats a good sign for the WB. A lot of looting though. He is guarding his house as I write this. By the way, I got in touch with him on his home phone, imagine that.
I am looking for my seminary friend Tobi. We’re praying for all you folks here in Ga. Marcia
all im hearing about is the eastbank and not too mucn info on the westbank…is marrero doing alright…what about harvey..if anyone has any info on these areas please email to lemme kno…thank you

Daniel, thanks for the information-My husband is about 5th generation Algiers Point, tho we live in Colorado for the last 6 years and we are hurting for the WB, Algiers, and Terrytown, where I taught for many years at CTK school.
Ellen
My parents returned to their house in Algiers this morning - by St. Andrew the Apostle School. The area hadn’t flooded. A big branch fell on the back side of their house and left a hole so some rain did get inside. No power, but they were able to use their home phone to call out. I heard lots of people were walking across the GNO bridge to the West Bank, and 3 shelters took in 200 people each hour. I guess those people had no choice… East Bank is so wet.
Jefferson Parish is split by the Mississippi River. The area north of the river has received the major flooding. This is why Sprint phones with 504 area codes are not working, as the Sprint switching center is in this area. The are a south of the river received much less water. In the case of the area around Laffite Larose Hwy/Leo Kerner Pkwy, I have a report directly from someone that managed to get back to that area that there is very little if any flooding. An internal report from UPS says some parts of the Harvey area had water up tp 4 feet high, but given that the Harvey UPS building had no water in it, if may be only the lower lying areas near the river.
Reading conflicting status for Gretna/Terrytown. Have a cousin living in the 500blk of Diplomat St. Is there a list of names of those displaced/injured/or worse. We are basically among the only family he has - but have recently moved and have unlisted phone. Unless he was able to grab his phone book on his way out - he will have no means to contact us. We would rather have him in CA with us than stuck & alone in a shelter.
Has anyone heard information on the houses/damage in Lafitte, LA? I have friends who have lived there over 40yrs and have no idea if their homes are still standing. Any news?
Rainman thanks so much for that information I am not that familiar with NO I just made my first visit this past March.Keeping everyone in my prayers.
Regarding Luling, LA: I have friends from there, and I know they’re safe, but I’ve been looking for a status on the area. According to their website (http://www.winndixie.com/locations/storm_store_closings.asp), the WinnDixie in Luling is running on generators and selling non-perishables, so I’m hoping that this is a good sign, that they aren’t flooded, just without power.
Best wishes and prayers to all the victims and families.
That does sound like good news melissa that would be about 30 minutes from my loved ones home Thanks for sharing the info.Keeping everyone close in my prayers.
I LIVED AND WORKED IN BELLE CHASSE LA I HAVE MANY FRIENDS OUT THERE. REMEMBER ALBERTS THEN I MOVED TO PENSACOLA FL ( FIND ME AT EZ PAWN PENSACOLA I HAVE A ROOF OVER YOUR HEAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!! WITH LOVE
Does anyone have any information about the Spanish Oaks area of Harvey?
I heard this morning rescue crews are in Bogalusa, power and phone lines are down, but the occasinal call can be made out. Crews are going house to house looking for anyone who needs to be moved to shelters. So far no deaths have been recorded. Lots of trees down, no gas in the area

Here is an update on conditions in St. Charles Parish as of 8:00pm, August 31st.
St. Charles Parish still has no electricity. Most major arterial highways have been cleared of debris and are open to vehicular traffic. Entergy crews, contractors and all St. Charles Parish Departments are coordinating efforts to clear trees from roads and power lines. Fire Departments and St. Charles Parish School personnel have been assisting in all the efforts to speed the recovery process. St. Charles Parish Sheriff deputies are monitoring neighborhoods and businesses on a 24 hour basis. There has been no looting.
No businesses are open and there is no estimate yet of when any businesses will be able to open. Gasoline is in extremely short supply.
There is no problem with the water supply on the West Bank of the parish. THE EAST BANK OF THE PARISH IS UNDER A BOIL ORDER because the distribution system went under 20 psi during the height of the storm.
Rumors that all parish water has been shut off are FALSE.
Distribution of ice and water will begin tonight at the West Bank bridge park.
Industry personnel are asked to tend to their families and return to work.
For questions about highway access contact the Louisiana State Police at 504-471-2775.
The National Guard is arriving on the morning of Sept. 1st for protective purposes.
There are unfounded rumors concerning the situation with St. Charles Parish Public Schools. All schools have been inspected and are in good condition. There has been no definitive date established yet as to when schools will open. School officials are restating that schools are closed until further notice. BUT SCHOOLS WILL BE ABLE TO OPEN IMMEDIATELY WHEN POWER IS RESTORED.
Parts of St. Rose, Airline Hwy and Ormond Blvd. were affected by storm surge from Lake Pontchartrain. Damage assessment is still underway.
The West Bank was not affected by storm surge.
We are unable to provide specific information on individual streets and homes. Wind damage is as expected with winds in excess of 100 mph.
Residents who have evacuated are advised to please remain where they are. Any residents who feel they must return home are reminded to bring enough food home with them, since there are no stores opened at this time. In addition, residents are reminded that fuel for vehicles will probably be unavailable. No pharmacies are open for refilling prescriptions. The sewer system is not functioning fully and overflows after flushing can be expected.
Again, St. Charles Parish residents are asked not to return home, but if they must, it is imperative that everyone understands the situation they will face when they reach home.
St. Charles Parish Public School Information:
All St. Charles Parish Public schools have been assessed from Hurricane Katrina’s damages. We have been told to expect power restoration within one to two weeks. We are confident that within days of power being restored to the parish all classes will resume.
The Payroll Department of St. Charles Parish Public Schools would like to inform employees that you will receive your scheduled September 20th payroll check. In addition, your one time payment on September 30th will also be processed.
Any specific info about the Touro Shakespeare Nursing home on the west bank? I have a daughter who’s an LPN there, and reported OK indirectly by an evacuee the 30th, but nothing since. Thanks and God bless and preserve you all.
Looking for information on Danbury Street (Algiers) on the WB side of the river? Lived in Algiers on Danbury for over 10 years growing up. Hope everyone is ok. I noticed a guy name Daniel posted a comment stating he spoke to a friend in Algiers. Is that you Bro?
To Miriam Adams: I heard that around our area (by victory drive in westwego) was fairly dry but lots of trees were down and there was much debris. yesterday, mayor billiot said westwego had fresh water and possibly could have electricity by the end of next week. my neice said she actually drove down the westbank expressway to hwy 90 and left out toward I-310 to go to port arthur texas. we haven’t heard anything about our church in harvey, tho. i did hear that the canal overflowed and as you know that’s where we are. my daughter called me from fort worth and said her friend text messaged her that the westwego police called her friend’s folks in opelousas (they own one of the shrimp truck businesses so the city had contact numbers) and told them their home had been looted and the only thing left there was a bed frame. the wego policeman told them there were too many looters to corral all of them. no matter what, i feel like a rich person. my family is safe, i have a safe place to stay with people who love and care about us. as far as the things and the property, we surrendered that all to God before we left. Westwego, New Orleans and all of us really need to get our focus on God. He made a way for us and as soon as I get home, I’m gonna see who all I can help and show His love and care to no matter what is left for us. With love and prayers, charlene

My parents live in Bogalusa. I received a call from my dad 9/1 via cell. He had driven to Vicksburg looking for gas, generators, window a/c, etc. His words, “you would not recognize Bogalusa”. Lots of trees down & on houses, his included. 4-6 weeks before power is restored. no water. no phone. no cell. Looting.
I TOO AM WORRIED ABOUT METROPOLITAN HOSPICE. DOES ANYONE KNOW? IT IS ON READ BLVD. NEAR METHODIST HOSPITAL.
Nicola & Luci,
I also posted a request for info on my cousin living in Gretna / Terrytown or the condition of the area. Still no response. I have registered with the sites to help find missing/identified loved ones. For more info on those go to CNN.com then look under hotlines. One is the NOKR (Next of kin registry) and another is the Coast Guard officical site. Hasn’t worked for me yet, lets hope no news is good news and that they are safe with no phones and had no “need” to go to a shelter.
Take Care

I’m looking for information about English Turn Dr. in New Orleans, 70131, on behalf of a friend. Does anyone know if there is any flooding, looting, or damage? Anything? Thanks!!!
Ormond area Destrehan is fine. Linwood,Melrose, Ormond Blvd no flooding problems. Water running, but no electricity. Water and drainages remained intact after the storm. Area had minor wind damage only. Friends went back there actually on Wedsnesday, inspected, left, and then brought family back on Thursday. They have a generator and are buying a window unit. Sport boat canopy ripped off (parked outside), gazebo roof blown off, just a couple of shingles lost and no other damage to their house on Melrose. Other than electric and phones, area ok.
Liz,
Thank you for your response, at present haven’t heard anything. Will post any future news.

Entire family outside Louisiana anxiuosly seeking information on current whereabouts of Walter and Joanne Maestri, Gretna, LA.
I traveled to Bogalusa over the weekend. FEMA is finally getting there. Locals have had to rely on each other. The Red Cross is now there as well. Power to be out in outter areas for another 3-4 weeks same with phone service. There is power in the parts of town. The hospital now has power.
They still need ice, bottled water, paper goods, paper plates cups plastic silverware, nonparishable foods. and GAS. They have been getting limited gas supplies, but not much.
Tons of trees down, most homes are in good shape, a few have trees on or in them. Roof damages from a few missing shingle to totally pealed off. Everyone is pitching in to help each other. There is some minor looting.
It was truely awesome to see people from all over the US traveling south with whatever they could load into their cars, trucks, camper, u-hauls to deliver needed supplies. The National Gaurd from TN,MS,MI,IN, IL, just convoys arriving with food, water, generators was something to see. It’s rough right now, but getting better. Line crews from all over are stringing new lines as most lines are down. Rt 10 is a rough road to travel, but 16 is fine as is 60. I hope to get back there either this weekend or next.
Can anyone tell me about Touro-Shakespeare Nursing Home in Algiers? It is located on General Meyer Avenue. Still trying to locate where residents were evacuated to during Katrina. Still seeking information on Penny Fay Bolton who was a resident there. Penny is in her 40s and required care following a traumatic brain injury.
Has anyone seen the building? We had reports it was looted before residents were even evacuated and other rumors that they were evacuated prior to Katrina hitting. No one from the facility has contacted the family and they want very much to find her.
Thanks
