Okay….

Basically, here’s what I can gather…

Most everything from City Park Avenue up to Robert E. Lee (Lakeview) is underwater, due to a breach in the levee. Rescue efforts are being hampered by the lack of radio communication. Many had to flee to rooftops or patches of high ground, though some were able to snag rides on passing boats.

Uptown, water damage is much less. I’m reading/hearing Uptown suffered mainly from downed trees and other wind-related damage. HIgh water in the 9th Ward similar to Lakeview. I have seen little or nothing about the Mid-City area.

Structural damage to nearly every bridge over the lake, particularly the I-10 bridge to/from Slidell. That’s still being assessed, and there’s no word yet on when or how evacuated residents might get back in, depending on where they’re coming from. I”ll get more detail on that later today.

Still, all in all, we’re feeling pretty lucky. We’re packing one bag with a large sense of humor and another with an extra supply of patience, since recovery is going to take a while. But we’[ve got some fine examples in watching all that happened in Florida last year, after folks there faced FOUR hurricanes in one season. They’ve pushed through it and we will too.

Supposedly water from the levee breach (6 feet of it) has reached parts of downtown. It continues to rise by approx. 1 ft every hr or two from reports I hear. If they don’t get it under control by later today, the rescue effort is going to crack and turn into…what, I don’t know…it doesn’t have a name.

They just said on the ‘Today’ show that another levee has been breeched and the quarter is filling up with water.

I’m not sure how I found it, but there’s another blog with excellent coverage of the damage. Great detail for anyone who’s wondering about their homes. All through this I’ve been reading that one and this one. Anyhow, he has info on where exactly the second levee broke and what is being damaged by it now. http://www.brendanloy.com/

I am in Hamilton Canada, and I offer you folks my prayers and hope, New Orleans is a great city according to my friends( i have never been there) as most of my friends are blind, the are at the superdome, sans guidedogs, so a few are worried, though our hope floats however deep the floods rise.

Does anyone know if the water from this breach is making it south over Metairie Ridge, or is it stopping at City Park Avenue?

    OTTILIA,
I think you’d better find another destination. Come back in 5 years, maybe.

Reports say the FQ is filling due to the levy breaks. Unless you plan to sleep in your car and enjoy the storm damage, you won’t want to be in NO.

I’m looking for any info on Aurora Gardens, DeGaulle/Kabel Ave. area south of the river.

My heart is broken for the people of N.O. I love the city as if it were my own.

As soon as the city has recovered enough to handle it, I will be visiting and spending my money to help the economy. In the meantime, I’ll be donating to the Red Cross to help.

    God bless you all.

Can anyone tell me what it’s like in the Gentilly Ridge area of New Orleans? Specifically in the 3500 block of Gentilly Boulevard? My daughter lives there. Thanks

I am looking for a family member that lives in the Chartres and
Franklin area near Feelings Cafe. I believe this is in the 9th ward
and I have heard that the flooding is very bad there – as much as 12
feet in some areas. All I am loking for is if someone has information
on the conditions in the area. I am concerned since no one has heard
from him since yesterday morning and he is merely three blocks from the
river and about 6 blocks down river from the French Quarter.

Can someone please let me know what the flooding is like in that area?

Maggie, no specific info, but on the TV they were just talking about the city’s highlands and lowlands–Gentilly Ridge is exactly that, a ridge. Sounded like water will mostly flow from there, but again it’s a block by block thing.

From what I’m hearing, the 9th Ward looks really bad, b/c it’s so low and water from all kinds of breaches are draining to there.

I was born and raised a half block from Gentilly Terrace school at 4631 Arts Street between Mirabeau and Gentilly Blvd. Has anyone heard how that area fared?

I left my house standing and 3 cars and a boat in the driveway on Venus Street in Gentilly Ridge. I live 3 houses off Gentilly Blvd and a block off Franklin. Can anyone tell me how the area looks and whether power is restored or not? I’m staying with family in Fort Lauderdale.

Does anyone know how high the water got on Waldo Dr between L.C. Simon and Robert E. Lee. I go to UNO and I lived in a second floor apartment of a house (as do many others in the area) and I just really have no clue how high the water got. I’ve checked out Google Maps and they offer a satellite view post Katrina (8/31/05, I believe) but you cannot tell how high the water is as it is simply an aerial view. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
