You got questions?….

Just to bring you up to date on some questions being asked over and over at various places….

The damage Uptown is mainly wind damage. High water has not been a problem like in the Bywater and Lakeview areas. Uptown includes the Loyola and Tulane areas.

Lakeview and Bywater, Chalmette, some of East New Orleans, Slidell, parts of Kenner and Metairie all have definite high water problems and will for some time. But parts of the Westbank are okay. Things were okay, by comparison, in the CBD and the Quarter, but they still need to get a handle on the broken levee situation or water will continue to rise.

High water and heavy damage at the Fairgrounds and Lakefront airport, around UNO.

Local officials say evacuees shouldn’t think about returning until Monday at the earliest.

There is no power and no phone service and won’t be. For a loooooooooong time.

The I-10 bridge between Slidell and Orleans Parish is toast. For a loooooooooong time.

The Causeway is open, but only to emergency traffic.

Martial law has been declared. This is to minimize looting and keep gawkers from getting in the way.

There is, of course, a lot more. But these seem to be the major questions.

I think it would be a good idea for someone (TV or some government agency) to begin posting an aerial view of the NO metro area with the flooded areas shaded. More than anything else, I think this would settle the minds of many of the evacuees, who aren’t able to tell from simple video. Just Knowing one way or the other would be a huge help and soothe the agitation.

T-P has issued a call for boats. Please get that word out so that persons in E. Texas, W. La., Arkansas who may have flatbottomed boats can respond. This is the best thing they can do…everyone else without a boat should stay away.

Dear Warehouse Dist. and Garden Dist Residents,

Is there anyone remaining in either the Warehouse Dist or Garden Dist that is in a position to drive or walk by a property. We are very interested in receiving a damage assessment on our homes.

We are interested in receiving information on a home in the 800 block of Constantinople Street and the 2000 block of Laural.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks,

    Martin Keeney

From what I’ve been able to read and hear at press conferences, the levee fix was delayed because finding the actual levee break and determining the severity took time. Then they’ve got to organize helicopters dropping 3000 lb. sandbags.

Thanks for that phone update, I’ll make sure I pass that along to people who are talking to people there on the ground. A lot of people should have older phones. I kept mine specifically for power outages.

Everyone must leave by boat, helicopter, truck, or foot.

Anyone who can leave under their own power is basically being told to take the Crescent City Connection to the west bank, then turn towards the Huey Long Bridge, then take River Road to I-310. Probably a 20 mile walk but anyone who can do it should, NOW.

My sister-in-law was trapped in a gas station about 4 miles west/north of the Airport as of Sunday at approx. 9:00 p.m. local time. Does anyone have any information about her? Susan is 38 years old; Korean-american; 5′ 7″; dark hair.

We have contacted all news outlets, government agencies, relief groups but no lists exist for people who were picked up or rescued during the hurricane - no list exists for shelter occupants or even the Superdome. We are all in New York being told “don’t come down” and yet we have a family member without any friends/family in the middle of all of this…. Any ideas or information as to her whereabouts would be obviously greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance. Everyone in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama are in our thoughts and prayers.

P.S. I spoke with Homeland Security Dept. in Jefferson Parish at 504-349-5360 earlier this evening and their phones are working. Have to wait a while but they’re working. Additionally, if you need to report a missing person, Atlanta’s Red Cross office is handling requests at 404-870-4440.

Water rising at 17th St. canal

    Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.

Mayor Ray Nagin has announced that the attempt to plug a breach in the
17th Street canal at the Hammond Highway bridge has failed and the
rising water is about to overwhelm the pumps on that canal.
The result is that water will begin rising rapidly again, and could
reach as high as 3 feet above sea level. In New Orleans and Jefferson
Parish, that means floodwaters could rise as high as 15 feet in the next
    few hours.
Nagin urged residents to try to find higher ground as soon as possible

My heart and soul goes out to all the people who have and are suffering in this catastrophe. I hate to be a Monday morning quarterback, but I really have a several issues that I do not comprehend. I watched the news conference with Governor Blanco, Senator Landrieu, the National Guard, the FEMA representative(s), and others.

There were several things I heard the professionals (i.e. FEMA, Army Corps of Engineers, other military-type personnel) responsible for rescuing, preventing flooding, and providing the necessities to those who are now refugees say that astound me.
    1. First, why are they just now bringing swift boats from California to assist in rescuing people and delivering supplies to those isolated. I thought that FEMA had everything positioned in adequate supply to move in as soon as the storm passed. I thought that it was a given that New Orleans might be inundated. Why wouldn

Ya’ll……the governor has just announced that NO must be COMPLETLEY evac’d. There is no fixing the levee right now and they are expecting Orleans parish to have 12-15 feet of water by tomorrow.
I hate to sound negative, but ya’ll are not going to the town on Monday.
They are evacuating EVERBODY….EVERYBODY…EVERYBODY….They are working 24/7 to resuce people from attics and roof tops. I think saving lives are more important at this point than ariel pictures.
The only thing anyone can do right now is WAIT, and quit assuming that you know what is going on. Especially if you aren’t even there.
Rely on what your governor is telling you and nothing else. Phones lines are jammed and you will hear from family eventually.
It’s not easy to relax at this point. But we have to stay realistic.
    LISTEN TO YOUR GOVERNOR.

  27. Chad (unregistered) August 30th, 2005 8:31 pm

Also, the governor has said at this point the rescue teams are pushing bodies to the side and concetrating on rescuing.
Let’s save lives at this point instead of worrying about material things.

I was wondering if anyone had info on uptown area - Valmont Street {off Jefferson} between Freret & Claiborne. My friend and her family were in the top aartment. The last time I heard from her Monday at 6am, a tree had fallen in one of the bedrooms and water was starting to come in. Also, she mentioned via text message to my phone that windows were broken as well. If anyone has info on the 2400 block of Valmont street, please let me know. Or better yet, please see about the Weaver family @ 2413. Its 2 adults and 2 teenage kids. I dont believe any of them can swim and one of the adults have a walking disability {cripple}.
Please check on them if you are able to.

Also, I havent been able to contact any other 504 area code number by cell or land line but I have been able to communicate with other friends via text message on the cell phone. If you have that option on your phone consider that.

    Thanks,
    T. Durden

I now live in Atlanta, but grew up in New Orleans (DeLa Salle and UNO alumni) and my heart and prayers are very much with all of New Orleans and all the areas devastated by Katrina. Sunday I met my 87 year old mom and 88 year old Alzheimer’s-stricken stepdad as they fled New Orleans and they are now here in Atlanta with me. My mom’s house is in the Tall Timbers subdivision at the end of Gen’l De Gaulle. If anyone has any information on how that area fared, please be so kind as to e-mail me at: scott@spasticlizard.com so I can update my mom, and God bless you all as you work thru this. Our prayers are with you.

I remember, when I lived in the Irish Channel on Pleasant Street, one night the power went out all night. About 1AM, I hear a voice dstinctly yelling “the cops are way gone, let’s go bust the windows out on that A&P and get some beer.”

Then I come online here and learn that the A&P on Magazine got looted. Again.

Sad to see some things never change. Is my house at 1001 Pleasant Street (around from Semolina’s and Cafe Atchafalaya) still intact?

“my aunt is on the 7th floor of the doubletree - any info on that hotel? Thank you! Susan”

Double Tree Hotel is near Poydras on Canal Street and as is the French Quarter Area, that hotel is well above sea level (13 maybe 14 feet)compared to most of the city. Try their number… 504-581-1300… they had working phone lines (keep trying if you get busy signals) and generator power earlier today.

These numbers go to the US Coast Guard, since the New Orleans 9-1-1 system failed during the flooding. If you have someone still trapped, or trying to get out, call these numbers. This is for both La. and Miss.

He mentioned he would offer apartments to people from the devastated areas for $300 a month, and rent them on a month by month basis and willing to work with people. All units have appliances, A/C etc. I’m not sure if this info will be helpful or not, but I felt it important to get this info out to people in need! I find it really hard to believe what I’m reading. Did the Mayor really tell people it was okay to cross the river and find what ever relief they could? And if so, what was he smoking? He just about gave the okay to tear the rest of the city up? Please! Any one! Tell the military and the president to take the streets back. I am also concerned about my friends on the police force. Why can’t they use the larger damaged boats to help fill in the levy? Line them on their sides and purposely sink them. Then fill in gaps with sand bags. Seems like anything large dropped in the breaks would help bridge the gaps quicker.

Just a silly thought, I know.

The Government has found the compassion in its heart to provide a zip code to the Astrodome in Huston to receive donations. I would like someone who knows how to begin a movement to have the governemnt pick up the shipping cost to that zip code. Doesn’t seem like much to ask. Do you think it is possible?
