Animal Rescue Info

This is the information I got from my roommate about how he’s trying to get the cat’s rescued from our evacuated apartment. Please add to this information as much as possible. I know there are bigger worries in the city right now but when those are taken care of it would be nice if some animals could be saved.

***Original text below***

No one knows for sure if any organization is getting clearance to go
into the evacuated areas and get animals out, but it sounds like 3
groups are going to try. Their numbers are here. Anyone with trapped
animals, I’d suggest calling all three and try to get onto a list in
case they are allowed to get animals out. If anyone knows of anyone
else trying to do animal rescue, please post the info. Since it’s iffy
whether any group can get in and there are a lot of trapped animals,
it’s best to contact as many as possible. (Obviously if you have a
cellphone number for anyone who’s still in NO, you should call them
too.)

The HSUS *is* coordinating first-responder type rescue, or so the (very
nice, patient) woman I spoke to believes; they’re heading to New
Orleans now. She put me through to voicemail for Mike who’s
coordinating disaster response. She said they’re getting slammed with
hundreds of voicemails. She said it’s OK if people with trapped animals
call her and get put through to Mike’s voicemail too, or if they’re very
lucky, they might get to talk to someone. I’d suggest any cat owner try
this number along with any others anyone can come up with. If I get a
more direct number for the HSUS’s New Orleans effort, I’ll post it, but
this is what there is so far.

Well, I don’t know if this will post ’cause of your blogspot ban, but I have a whole list of pet rescue links at my blog. Here’s the URL–maybe…

John, your comment is SICK! I can’t believe you said that & it should have been blocked. I hope you never are faced with this or perhaps maybe you should….get some help…..

How can anyone worry about animals right now? That seems sick to me. There are people starving to death, getting killed, getting raped, and living in their own excrement. And money is going toward saving cats? What is the world coming to?

  5. Kristina (unregistered) September 1st, 2005 8:38 pm

While it is definitely important to focus on helping the people who so desperately need it there are many people concerned about their pets who had to be abandoned. I know of another group who seem to be trying to rescue animals: North Shore Animal League: http://www.nsalamerica.org. It seems they’ve been going in to rescue animals, although I don’t know all the details. Hopefully, they can help as well.

I know how much my animals are part of my family and so my heart goes out to all the people affected by this disaster and to the pets they’ve had to leave behind. I hope everyone gets the help they need, and SOON.

Does anyone know what happened to that poor boy’s dog Snowball? If he can be found, please let me know. I live in Los Angeles and would be happy to take him in here until his family is settled and can take him back. I am willing to pay to get him here. My heart is breaking for that boy and everyone else there. I want to help…please find Snowball e-mail me at rfinvader@aol.com

Has anyone heard how the zoo fared during the storm and now in the aftermath?

  9. To Rob (unregistered) September 1st, 2005 9:40 pm

Rob, I just logged in to this blog to see if anything had happened to Snowball. I wanted to adopt him or her until the boy could get a new home. I’m so glad to see a compatriot with the same feelings and wonders.

I am disgusted and appaled that someone would torture a little boy so much that he would barf… the hurricane ripped his home out from under him, and now because of a carrier policy he gets his best friend ripped out from under him too? What if that trauma scars him for life. Obviously whoever wrenched that dog from him has never lost a four-legger friend.

I have 7 acres and was in the path of the hurricane’s final rains. My basement didn’t even flood; I feel lucky. I won’t pay to airfreight Snowball in, but I’ll re-home the dog until that little boy has a foundation under his feet again.

Snowball is welcome here. Snowball is welcome in LA with Rob too.

Now, if only a bunch of people would come forth and take the kid, hehe…

Bill, no kidding! I have a great suggestion about the animals: eat them! They’re one person’s pet and another’s much needed dinner. Screw the cats and dogs. This is armageddon for New Orleans.

  11. Rob (unregistered) September 1st, 2005 9:55 pm

    Linda,

Thanks for your post. I am glad to see that I’m not the only one who feels this way. I want to help in a way that will make a difference to someone….anyone. The Red Cross is fine I suppose but we are Americans and Americans should always be there to hep when needed. To me, a gift of money is not enough. I want to make a real difference in someone’s life during this misery that they are having. If I can’t help that poor little boy, there must be something else that can be done in a more personal way. Linda, my heart breaks thinking about that little boy and his dog Snowball. I understand why they can’t transport animals on the buses to Houston but for God’s sake…..have some kind of plan for the animals. That Guardsman said he didn’t know what would happen to that dog. How can this be??? What can we do to help?

  12. shelli (unregistered) September 1st, 2005 9:58 pm

Just wanted to say that we gave to the red Cross AND to Noah’s wish - my heart cries for ALL living creatures in this disaster.

I applaud the work human AND animal rescue groups are doing.

  13. Ben (unregistered) September 1st, 2005 9:59 pm

I am very concerned about the people and yes they should come first but if there is help available for animals then by all means they should be helped.
What do you think is going to happen when the animals also get hungry. It is for safety as well as just being HUMANE!!!

  14. Pam (unregistered) September 1st, 2005 10:01 pm

Bill–the people who stayed in the city did so by choice, the animals didn’t. They depend on humans for their food. The people are going to have access to all they help they could possibly need from organizations all over the world.

  15. Utah (unregistered) September 1st, 2005 10:33 pm

Thanks to those of you who have posted thoughtful kind hearted comments regarding helping the animals in this disaster. Domestic animals are completely dependent on people and should not be abandoned in a disaster. They are God’s creatures and should be loved and protected as such.

Those who have posted snide or meanspirited comments are simply looking for attention. They are sad that no one is paying attention to their pathetic, sociopathic, meanspirited lives since everyone is focused on praying for and helping the animals and people of the Gulf coast who were affected by the hurricane.

God bless the animals and the people who are trying to help them.

  16. mia (unregistered) September 1st, 2005 10:40 pm

I just want to comment to those people who have no compassion for the animals that have been affect by Katrina. Animals to some people are just as important as people are. Animals do not choose, people choose for them. We need to HELP the animals also. Animals can help the healing process for alot of the people in NO. It’s so good to hear that there are animal lovers out there just like me. Thank you to the people who have stepped up and are helping out not just for the people but also for the animals. If we could just put our energy together in the right direction and not keep on pointing the finger we might be surprise with what we can accomplish.

hey,for the person that said this is better than 911,I think john was your name, YOU NEED COUNSELING!!!!! anyone who enjoys seeing things suffer people or animals is a horrible person.
I pray for the people and Im really worried about those poor animals.

  18. alicia (unregistered) September 1st, 2005 11:07 pm

Obviously human life takes priority over animals. However I have three dogs in our family and would be sick if I had to leave them behind.I do not think I could. Anyone who has a pet knows the comfort they can bring when times are bad. Hopefully people will be reunited with their pets or they can be adopted to loving people wanting to help.
John your an idiot and any other morons out there that think this tragedy is a joke should be left to live there. We have a moral responsibilty to help all suffering people and animals. Alicia

I believe they should open the stores in new orleans and Mississippi an let the people go in and get what they need to stay alive and not be aressted. this is not called looting this is call survival. and the store keeper should just write this off on there taxes, and if anyone come against them. sue the government for there tax.

I wish there was something I could personally do to help rescue the animals. However, I did give money to the North Shore Animal League which is previously mentioned in comments from Kristina. The website is http://www.nsalamerica.org. I can only say how very fortunate I am to be safe and sound in my home here in Maryland with my 17yr old cat Natasha. Barbara

  21. Kade (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 12:06 am

I’ve sent a considerable amount of money to animal rescue along with supplies. People had advanced warning to leave the city- the animals had no choice to be left behind by heartless people. I hope those who left their pets to die will be charged with animal cruelty as it was promised when New Orleans residents were told to evacuate .

After seeing the lawlessness and utterly barbaric acts taking place in New Orleans, I have very little sympathy for the people trapped there. They choose NOT to evacuate and they are choosing to attack police and rescue workers. Why should anyone feel sorry for these people? People in the 3rd world countries hit by the Tsunami didn’t even act this way.

The cats and dogs of New Orleans have more humanity than the monsters roaming the streets with guns robbing and raping at will.

  22. Kris (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 12:29 am

I agree with some of the comments from others. These people were warned in advance to get out! The animals are dependant upon people. Unfortunately, they cannot watch the news or listen to the radio to be prewarned to evacuate as the people could have. These animals are just as important as the people and it is just devestating to imagine how many innocent animals are dead. Some of you folks without hearts really need to seek help.

  23. Amy (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 12:36 am

Best Friends Animal Society is also helping with animal rescue. Their website can be found at: http://www.bestfriends.org. People needing help with animals can go to hurricane@bestfriends.org. Those wanting to help can register at: hrf@bestfriends.org

The people who were left behind fall below the proverty level, most of them had no means to leave. i know a few stuborn people stayed, thinking the storm would pass, but most had no choice! think about the people in your life that have no car and depend on public transportation. As far as the pets go, its hurts to even think about abandoning my cats, and i hope as many as possible can be saved soon. it breaks my heart and i have being thinking about the left animals since the storm struck. my prayers are with all the souls that were lost, people and pets alike.

  26. PetsoverPeopleanyday (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 1:06 am

Im glad this thread was started and refers to the many displaced animals now in NO because of Katrina. I have three cats and have been giving alot of thought to what i would have done or would do if i was in such situation. I have cried over the thought of being in such predicament as some of the folks in NO were, when told no pets allowed in evac area, and how absolutely heartbreaking it would be. I love animals over most people, and would not think twice about having some of the out-of-control people in NO be (neutralized permanently) and directing more of the energy towards rescuing and aiding the many hungry, lost, scared, and injured animals. As has been mentioned here before animals depend on their caregivers for just about everything and do not and did not have access to CNN to remove themselves from harms way. Unfortunately there are people who do not care one bit about animals in general, and surely do not care about them when it comes to expending energy, time, and money on them. It is their great loss to not know and feel the love of a pet. Pets without question should be on the list of beings that receive rescue, food, water, shelter, warmth, love, and dignity.

  27. Lynn (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 1:10 am

I will ignore Bill and John. I work everdayu for the welfare of animals in some way and I do feel bad for the humans but also the animals.

I was watching our TV station and a boy and his mom got out but left their pet behind. The boy said I have no idea what has happened to her.Well what is it that one pet cannot be taken. They had time to leave and time to take that pet(dog or cat)They said they will never return and will never know about the fate of their pet.Kinda like what some have said people had a choice but the animals did not. This story was heartbreaking. How could they do that?I want that pet.If I only knew what it was and where it was left.

Also saw on the news tonight a man clutching his 2 dogs that had been in the water with him for 8 hours. He said that over and over he apologized to the dogs for what he put them through.I guess he was upset because he did not flee.I am sure some stayed with animals and some stayed because they had no idea of the magnitude. They were told over and over.

The humans and the animals will be helped by rescues.I am sure the humans are wanting for their pets to be taken care of.In the chaos they may have been seperated. They will find comfort knowing that some are helping animals.

  28. Scott (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 1:13 am

All this stupid worrying about your pets is the same kind of stupidity which helped make this disaster by not rebuilding the levees. You worry more about your stupid animals than you do about all the poor blacks dehydrating and starving downtown. How much more selfish and inhumane can you get?

  29. chris (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 1:17 am

bill if you dont care about animals, what the hell are you doing in the website, no one wants to hear comments from a moron like you anyway, besides i dont see animals runnning around shooting rescue helicopters, raping women, and murdering people,so who’s life is more valuable??

  30. kevin (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 2:01 am

look here people why do we get animals? so they can be part of are familys? or just some thinf else we can hurt who gos sees the old lady when the familys has no more time for her is it you or is it the hungry little puppy or kitten that some one has left alone?

  31. kevin (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 2:14 am

chris is right. bill how has animals let us down they don.t have guns they don.t rape each other remeber bill animals where here long before we where its us human animals who have taken over there world are the animals looting right now or killing i work at an animal shelter and my only reward and my biggest reward is hearing a cat purr or a dog wagging his tail we humans can take lessons in kindness from the animals

  32. Katrina (yes it is) (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 2:19 am

Not everyone who left their animals are “hearltess”. But thanks for making people who have just lost everything and are freaking out over their animals feel like shit. I have three cats with me and my fourth cat got freaked out when we were putting him in the cat box and hid from us. We looked for him for three hours and had to leave him or we wouldn’t have been able to evacuate. I am going crazy. I would do anything to get my animals. And so many people had no option.. alot of people had to choose between staying with their pet or leaving.
Who are you people to even comment on any of this? You have no idea.
And also, I don’t have a car. We were literally five minutes away from not being able to rent one. The rental car company ran out as soon as we got ours. And we had a reservation. I don’t even have one friend in New Orleans with a car, we all ride bikes. People wanted to leave, they just couldn’t! Damn all you people for even specualting on any of this! You are the hearless ones.

  33. Kris (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 2:25 am

To those who don’t think the animals are worth rescuing: Several years ago my hometown experienced a major fire. I was at work when the mandatory evacuation order came. My dogs were at home. I wasn’t allowed to drive back to my house to get my dogs, clothes, documents, or anything. In that misery as I saw my town, my neighborhood, the houses on my street in flames on the local and national news, my biggest grief was that I had lost not only my house and everything I owned, but that I thought I had lost my dogs as well. Two days after I was evacuated, I found out that animal shelters of neighboring towns were housing animals that had been brought in by police officers, city workers, and others who had been able to get to them. To make a long story short, I was lucky to find both my dogs, and finding them safe and alive (though a little haggard) was the single brightest moment of an incredibly horrible experience. So while you might not care about the animals, to a little boy or a family or an elderly woman who has lost everything, wandered or been shuttled dazed and overwhelmed from FEMA shelter to FEMA shelter, and has no idea what to do next, being reunited with a lost pet, or even just knowing that they are safe, can be a big and important thing.

Katrina (…Kat… cat… makes purrfect sense to us),

Our hearts go out to you for what you were forced to do. You never, ever have to give reasons why you had to hightail it out of there. The people who choose to type the derogatory shit are afflicted with verbal diarrhea. Perhaps, in time, they will heal and learn how to channel their energy with compassion towards their fellow man. Those of us who “get it” grieve with you.

    Kindest regards,

I think it is a situation where you want to help both people and Animals - I have to admit watching the scenes on TV in my home in Australia, it astounds me that when the tsunami happened it seemed to be more organised - I am not trying to bash anyone here but simply making an observation. I know that in the aftermath of the tsunami many countries sent troops and help instantly and were allowed to help and I know that Australia has tried to get into the zone to simply find Australian citizens and they have not been allowed in - I think in any crisis every offer of help should be accepted. When it comes to the Animals though - my dog is my companian - and I would not be able to leave her behind - i saw one scene which broke my heart - people who had saved their dog from their house then has to desert them when they got on the bus. My dog is like a child to me and I can understand why the dogs need to rescued. Anyway I hope things start to seem better in general soon.

I’m in Jackson, MS with my son and dog. We currently have my best buddy from N.O. and her dog and two cats. When I called her Saturday to find out if she was evacuating. She said she wasn’t because nowhere would take her animals. I was just about to drive down there and get her myself when I got a call that she was in a caravan, on her way to my house with all the animals. She made it here with about 12 hours to spare. The storm hit us on Monday. We lost power as we were out finding insulin for one of her cats. We sat in the sweltering heat so very grateful that ALL our family members were safe.

When our power was restored we cried over what was/is going on in a wonderful city I was fortunate to call home for seven years. I can not believe we could feed people in Afghanistan and then were unable to get the most basic of needs to those poor unfortunate folks. My brother in law is one of those guys you see flying in on the Blackhawks and trying to get water and food to a very understandibly hostile group of people. The ball was dropped in this instance by ‘the powers that be’ and lives were lost for want of a bottle of water.

Creator, keep those still trapped in New Orleans close to your heart.

  37. Kade (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 5:14 am

I don’t understand the people who left their pets. My dearest friends lost their ranch in a the CA wildfires last year. They didn’t have any advanced warning, they simply weren’t allowed to go up the road and save their animals. It nearly killed them thinking of how their animals suffered. How could you leave an animal you love to suffer like that?

It would be kinder to kill a dog rather than leave it to the savages rampaging New Orleans right now.

Many of these people have left and lost everything. They were too poor to get out of the city. They did not have money for a hotel room somewhere else. They hung on to their pets, because that was all they had left. I agree that the people must come first. But there are groups out there who rescue the animals. I think we have to stop verbally bashing everything and everybody. Send the positive to everyone alive to get out, including the animals. The blame should be on the government and fema. Your negative comments are heartless. It is best that you do something positive. Find a place to give blood…….JUST DO SOMETHING

  41. Gordon (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 6:42 am

How mankind treats its furry companions is indicative of how we treat each other. I think in the aftermath of Katrina, we see that this is so sadly true. Personally, I prefer the company of cats and dogs to humans - in the instances of looting and pure savagry shown on the television in New Orleans these past few days, my like of animals is even more reinforced. There are countless organizations helping people and so few helping animals. Don’t get me wrong - I applaud those helping humans. But even more, my admiration and my money, goes out to those who selflessly help those poor animals.

    Hi all,

I’m in the UK and we are animal lovers, We spend a lot of time after every disaster thinking about the animals as well as the people. What is hard is that these poor people know that the animals they have are on their own lonely and hungry and they can’t even end their suffering humanely. No one can explain to animals what has happened and they will not understand where their owners have gone.

We’re thinking of you and you animals and praying for you all. With love.

can anyone tell me where i can find out what is happening to all these animals not being allowed on the buses, i saw a little white dog on the news today being taken off a bus by a policeman, how could he do that, a dog that size takes up no room, and i live with 8 dogs, and would be lost without them, i would have gotten off the bus myself, rather than leave that dog there on its own,I would like to help financially if this little dog could be found, and any others that may suffer the same fate, remember dog spelt backwards is god,I am praying for all the people hit by katrina, god bless you all.

Linda, I happen to have some Zoo information.

This is what we know about the status of AZA member institutions in the affected area as of noon, August 30.

    Audubon Nature Institute
The staff of the Audubon Nature Institute is safe. The physical plants at both the Zoo and the Aquarium suffered little damage. The staff will continue to assess the impact on the animal collections at all the Audubon facilities.

    BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo
The Zoo has no electricity, there are lots of trees down, but there were no animal losses. They are already working on clean up.

    Alexandria Zoo
    No information.

    Jackson Zoo
The Zoo suffered very slight building damage and has about 35 trees down. There was no injury to any staff or animals. About half of the zoo has power. They will be closed for about a week while they clean up the trees.

    Birmingham Zoo
The Zoo is without electricity, had some trees down but they suffered no animal losses.

    Montgomery Zoo
The Zoo is without electricity, had some trees down, but they suffered no animal losses.

    Hope that helps!

Granted, animals may not be everyone’s first choice in saving… but they do deserve to be saved.

As always, tradegy brings the good and the stupid.
When faced with a horrible tragedy, we often turn to something that gives us comfort. The animals in question are probably the only thing left for many of these people, as long as the rescue attempts do not interfere with human rescue, go for it. For the ones posting stupid comments, you will rot in hell, so I will not even worry about your general sickness.

i don’t want to sound ignorant…. but there is no harm in trying to rescue the animals of new orleans. they are just as helpless and confussed as the humans. i’m not suggesting we take formula from the babies and feed the cats… but for one moment imagine yourself as a little elderly lady who has survived and possibly lost her spouse or partner and the only thing she has left (and what she considers to be family which she loves dearly) out of her whole entire exsistance is her little pet cat or dog. for some people this is the only hope they feel they have. for some people it may be a photo album, their child or another cherished item… for others it’s their pet. in some cases… their pet has done more for them that other humans may have. please don’t be crass with others because they understand or feel this way and you do not. everyone deserves to be rescued, feed and given shelter.
on another note…. i’m sure if i had nothing to eat for 7 days and only had a can of cat food left… my cats would be okay with sharing with me. they just don’t seem to be the hording type. and if it absolutly came to it… i’m certain my cat would forgive me if ,God forbid, it got so bad that he had to become my food. i would hope they would help me catch a wild animal first though.

People who have pets cannot go to a shelter during a storm. People who love their pets would not leave them in a storm. People die for their pets. God gave us the duty to care for our pets.
Snowball’s little boy did a masterful job of caring for him. That little boy didn’t lose his dog when people were losing their children.
That little boy has lost everything, and now some unthinking person that taken his whole world away from him.
A dog is a powerful source of comfort when there is none. A dog will die with you and for you.
I pray to God that this little boy and his dog are reunited TODAY. There is someone in Texas who will take this boy with his dog.
This is not a small matter. The outcome could be lifelong distrust of authority. By taking this dog from this little boy he could become tomorrow’s looter, or he could learn that people are basically good and he could become something truly great someday.
Please, please, do whatever can be done to get Snowball back to this little boy!!!!!
And if George Bush wanted to increase his polling numbers he would be seen in New Orleans today with Snowball in his arms standing on the pile of rubble. Then he could go in his helicopter and have another great photo op when he’s seen handing Snowball back to the little boy somewhere safe in Texas.

The People of New Orleans and surrounding areas are going to need lawyers to file suit against the Feds, for the preventable horror, this is uncalled for.
The government needs to delay the new Bankruptc law that is to go into effect this Oct 1 for those that are now suffering or these people are never going to be able to recover.
Or those in the area need to start that process nowto meet the deadline looming.

If you have friends in that area pass the word around to them so they are aware of their rights.

I have been more worried about the animals then the people during this whole ordeal. They are the ones trapped and dieing in the attics as their families left to be rescue. There is food and there is help. Not 3 meals a day and as much water as you want. But people are sitting on the roadsides complaining and not getting up and surviving. A reporter doing a story in a school house where several are staying found lots of food and juice that was being stored for upcoming school lunches. Hundreds staying there and not one person found the food. Nurses helping and starving and tired and not complaining but the all others are. So it comes back to the animals. They need are help and trying to find their way out of the rubble, will search for food and travel until they find it. We need to take a lesson from them and help them because they will be grateful. I won’t support the human efforts in a tradgedy like this only the animals efforts. Now this is turning itself into a racial war which makes me want to help the humans even less, reports are saying that if the refugees were white we would be making more effort in rescuing them. Sending my money where it is needed to the North Shore Animal League and Human Society.

    Hi All!
Paula, thanks a lot for the information about the Zoo - hope, they are going on “well”.
I am living in Germany - I am surely not a cruel person, but I agree to Jamie and to everyone who is worried about animals. I would die for my dogs - and can’t understand how anybody could leave his animal alone in this situation! And as many of you just said: the animals are trapped - they had no chance to go out there. I really hope that the people in New Olreans AND the animals will get help as soon as possible!

    Thanks !

TO BILL & Scott::::your response about animals!!!
Dear I do feel for the People, but I also Feel for the animals cause they are just as defenseless and needy as the people are right now. Everyone is Looking at the people and VERY VERY little are looking at the animals. SO yes somone has to take care of them. I have two Boxers that I love more than life itself and Yes I would Save them before I saved either one of you, for the fact that they are like my children. When I took both of them in it was till there life ended. Animals DEPEND on us to take care of them. WHY are so many in the shelter? Cause People get animals as a toy and not a life. And they need to eat, drink and breath just as we humans do…. It is just a matter of personal choice… But I have to say that you both are probably the ones that have animals and leave them chained up outside everyday and just give food and that is it. No LOVE or Companionship!!!!!!

  59. Jackie (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 10:20 am

as pet owners we are very saddened by the comments of John, Scott and the other “so-called humans”. Our pets are like our children-they depend on us for their safety. I’m so happy to hear that the animals are being helped and God bless the rescuers. Our prayers are with all the people affected by the storm. John, I feel sorry for you-your messed up in the head-hope you don’t children

Animals help save humans. We have dogs out there right now searching for people trapped in rubbish. Why not be unselfish and return the favor? To forget the animals would just be plain inhumane.

  61. Zenu (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 10:33 am

The first priority should be the animals. Did anyone see those poor sea lions? They are trully defensless, not the thugs and whinney welfare babies crying about “no budy doin nuttin for da po folks”. Stop raping and pillaging, get off your obese (I mean, can you believe how FAT these people are? I thought they were poor? They don’t know what “poor” means) ass and walk out of the city. Really, what’s keeping them there? No body’s forcing you at gun point to stay. Get out and stop bitching.

To John, who says “hey wheres all the photos of the dead?Isnt this shit funnier than 911?

Posted by: john at September 1, 2005 06:07 PM “.

Maybe he would like to trade places, with someone that is trapped in that city, that hasn’t had food or water for days, because help and rescue is doing everything they can, to get everyone out of there. I believe, once he places hisself in that persons shoes, he will have a “change of heart” on how his words, and his stupid actions, effects the refugees and victims of this horrific event in the Southern States.

May GOD Bless each and everyone of you for your prayers and contributions, in times and events, such as this.

I have seen whites and travelers on our news trying to help one another. One family took a couple that is visting from another country and that lady was crying about how she wants to go home. Animals with these people and they said they have a 1/2 bag of dog food for 3 large dogs.

I have been through a disaster but not a national disaster. It was a house fire. All I could do was warn my son and open the door and let (hopefully) the cats run out.No time to find them.I was being overcome by the gas and when I ran next door I suddenly collapsed in the neighbors yar.My legs gave way.It was zero and I was weak from the gas.All of a sudden some kind of power came over me and I was able to pull myself up and get to the neighbors.I said “Don’t open the door but call the Fire Dept”.She did not believe me and looked stunned.I said CALL.Anyway my one cat came out but ran back in and was found dead. The other was never found but my husband said he THOUGHT he saw her in a closet(hard to tell). So the not knowing I looked for my 13 year old cat for 2 years.Every black and white cat I checked out.The dog came out with my neighbor forcing it.Guinea pigs died.

So I know how it is hard to leave behind.I had to I had no time.I can feel for Katrina. She did get her 3 but will be upset she had to leave one bheind. She had to flee the same as I had to do with a fire.I did mention about the teen who left a dog or cat behind but I don’t know the story. If he would have been in a situation like Katrina I am sure he would have said “I could not find my pet and left her behind”But didn’t say that.In fact a strange look on the mom’s face when he mentioned it.There are no plans for them to ever go back and try to find it.As for Katrina I hope she finds hers. There is hope.

I also faced another tragedy a few months ago.I had a pitbull come on my property and kill my cat.I had to witness the whole thing and it was horrific seeing her face.I wanted to walk away but I tried to stop it.I was also put in jeopardy.I still cry and cannot talk about it.I saw the horror but I did not see the horror with the house fire and my cats dying.I am still in very much pain over this. You never forget. They are like you kids and you are so helpless.

I want humans and animals to live. The last I heard there were 300 animals rescued but the farm animals like cows etc not sure about.Hopefully dogs and cats can go in a house and be upstairs and maybe cats in trees.I know a few of my cats jump on my windows to look out and that makes them higher.Hope that is what cats were able to do.Rescuers I am sure will have many stories to tell.

I want a Happy Reunion for those who had do leave animals behind. There were times where no choice but flee.

“The People of New Orleans and surrounding areas are going to need lawyers to file suit against the Feds, for the preventable horror, this is uncalled for.”
Excuse me? File suit against the Feds? They didn’t plan this disaster, and I’m tired of the microwave generation asking for a quick fix to everything and always putting the responsibility on someone else (the deep pocket). People are doing what they can in this aftermath, and it shouldn’t just be the government’s responsibility to help everyone out. It should be the responsibility of each of us to do what we can, as it could have been us. Put your money where your mouth is and do some good. And thank goodness some people think of the animals too. All living things deserve compassion.

You two have no Compassion. I agree with others on the blog that people had the opportunity to evacuate, while the pet are dependent on their owners for not evacuating. Animals don’t talk. They can’t tell you if they are in pain. They depend on humans to care for them. Bill, you are sick. I am disgusted at your comment. FYI, I choosed to donate my MONEY to the animal charity.

What a sad commentary on life in America today. Surrounded by computers, video games and nonsense reality tv, many people have been reduced to self-serving, egotistical, vapid individuals who have no true respect for life, be it human or animal — unless of course it is their own. An interview with a rather famous American serial killer who appeared to be a charming and well educated individual became increasingly disturbing when one realized the complete lack of empathy and compassion exhibited by this man as he spoke of the pain and death of either his animal or human victims. This, like the Nazi trials of World War II made my blood run cold. Such a clinical disassociation to the suffering of humans and animals plays a large part in the loss of hope and fruitless search for happiness that we see everyday. This singular path of self-preservation leaves no room for others in their world. They can take them or leave them as they become disposable like all their other possessions. The 70’s was called the us generation, the 80’s the “me” generation. It appears everything since can be referred to as “the lost” generation. Perhaps we should launch a “rescue” to save people like John and Scott from themselves? In the long run it might save us from them.

Happy to know that things are not the best but better than terrible. I have been crying my eyes out about that little dog Snowball. What a terrible thing to happen to that little boy. And the poor doggie, what has happened to him. Does anyone know?
I hope he has his collar and tags on so he can be rescued and reunited with his boy.Lesson to be learned here.ALWAYS tag your pets, you never know when disaster will strike. We have given $ to humans, now we want to give to animals. Who is the best and most honorable agency to give to?

I called the Humane Society of the United States this morning because I was so heartsick about Snowball. The representative said that the animals being taken from the refugees boarding buses were being transported to shelters in other areas and (hopefully) being tagged so they can be claimed later. I pray to God that this is happening and that they are being cared for. Please everyone, PRAY for their safety and for increased rescue efforts to make sure that all the animals in need are found in time.

Bill, I’d save a pet before a human…Just look at this world and ask yourself truthfully…”Who’s the “REAL” animal”? Atleast our pets don’t rape, murder and loot! My money goes to the pets…Remember, GOD created them first…and humans last.

Tiny, happy story… on “A Current Affair” last night, the reporter who went down to the Superdome sneaked out an old lady and her little white dog on their helicopter. The dog was the only thing she had left in the world, and she was clutching that poor dog pretty tight as she cried about watching children drown.

  78. Chris (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 12:09 pm

How dare that person who wrote saving a cat is not worth it. All animals are worth saving and should be rescued. They have no way of taking care of themselves and yet are so giving and love their masters unconditionally. I would never leave any one of my three cats or two dogs behind.

  79. Tammy (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 12:11 pm

You people are sick. There are children dying out there and you are trying to save the animals? There is a thing called priority. I love animals too but we need to at least get a little more organized with helping these people before we put forth an effort to start saving all the animals.

  80. Lynn (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 12:23 pm

To John and the very few other animal haters you are worthless.Animals are GOD’s creatures too.

As for taking pets I would have because I would immedieately (when told to leave) start packing what I could(pets first) but for my house fire I had to leave them behind.NO TIME at all.

When my son was in school(when we had the house fire) his teacher knew we had to leave pets behind. She asked the kids to write a paper about what they would take if they HAD TIME to leave in a emergency situation. My son and I sat down and started thinking we have 4 cars and 4 of us can drive and our pets would be first and then what belongings we could get.Now with us having pets I would stay in my car and not a shelter if I had to.

You know when I was grieving and felt guilty because of the fire and fleeing I had people say to me “Your pets can be replaced but your life cannot”.I know but I was grieving. No those pets cannot be replaced. They were the only ones. How can people say that the next ones will ease my pain??

We built a nice home and at times I sat in the driveway looking at it and trying to make myself go in and start all over.I had to no matter what I felt though. The fire was caused by some shoddy work we had done and their insurance company was ruthless. Also my insurance company was the pits.

It will take years to re-build New Orleans. Some will never return like a town near me that had a tornado years ago.People never went back.

That’s right “Bill,” forget the animals. What the bleep do you think homo sapiens are? Vegetables? You and your ilk that believe homo sapiens to be the “crown of creation” make me puke. Just because you weren’t raised in a loving family that included other species, don’t bore more highly evolved beings with that particular learning disability. Your attitude towards other species is, in fact, a form of severe retardation. It makes YOU the inferior species!

OK - I have 3 “kids” I call animals here and I would go insane if anything like this happened and I had to abandon them - i couldn’t. Second, the people of New Orleans at some point had to REALIZE they were living UNDER SEA LEVEL and the first good storm that blew through there would wipe civilization out - how did no one see this coming???

  83. Lana (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 12:41 pm

I can’t believe that there are so many heartless people out there that have no compassion for animals. I for one would have never left my pet behind, I could not live with myself knowing that I abandoned my animal, I would stay and wait to be rescued with my pet or die with it. I just watched the video clip that someone had posted on this blog of the man that was rescued from his rooftop and left his dog behind. I have never seen anything so heartbreaking!! I cannot believe that he did not even look back at his dog and that no one else on the boat offered to take the dog with, I would have put that dog on my lap or not left without him. The sad thing is that if that guy somehow was reunited with that dog, that dog would be so happy to see him and forgive him. It goes to show you that an animal has unconditional love and would have never deserted its owner, so why is it okay for us to do that to them. I am donating to the North American Animal League. God Bless them for what they are doing. If anyone knows what happened to that poor dog on the roof please write in.

    http://www.noahswish.org
PLEASE HELP. If I have some foster homes to put animals in the East TX area my organization can take some animals. EVEN IF SOMEONE WOULD DONATE ANOTHER LARGE OUTDOOR KENNEL WE CAN ALSO TAKE ANIMALS IN.
Right now I personally have over 7 animals in my home, my lease states that I can have up to 10 but I personally do not have the crates or kennels to take that in. I need volunteers to help animals.
Also…. The Dallas Animal Control is in need of volunteers to answer phones. If you can and live around there please call them.
If you do not live in TX and want to help email me at admin@brooklynspitbullrescue.com and I will get you to the right people.
    On a personaly note….
I was an EMT in NYC, I am now a Animal Rescuer. ALL life is important to me. YES people are dying, but so are animals. There are alot more agencies willing to help humans than animals. I have no problem with that, but dont attempt to make us animal lovers feel guilty for not helping the humans. Its not right and your concious tells you that. We are ALL doing our best.
Bless all of you for your thoughts and kind words. Bless all of you for your donations and help. Bless all of you, even the ones that are being heartless SOBs!

I believe that each and every living thing deserves to be helped to the best of our ability. I don’t think it is stupid to make sure animals are being helped as well. I don’t believe anyone has said that all help for people should be abandoned to save animals only, so I find no reason for calling people stupid and sick for simply trying to get help. I would be an absolute wreck without my dog and I’m not sure what I’d do without her. My heart goes out to all those who are suffering and I’ll keep you in my prayers.

I was orphaned at the age of 3 and grew up in group homes and foster care. I have no biological family, and my friends and my animals ARE my family. My animals have been a great source of comfort and strength through many bad times in my life. I cannot imagine the heartbreak and grief of leaving any of my 5 cats and 2 dogs behind to an unknown fate. For some of the pet owners in NO, their animals are the ONLY thing, other than the clothes on their backs that they have left. To say that it is wasteful to allocate rescue resources to the animals is not only unfeeling, but ignorant and stupid. A tradegy like this is easier to cope with if you escape with your loved ones, and that includes your pets.

  89. Phillip (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 2:00 pm

OK, for those of you who are talking about eating the pets that were left behind or not caring about them, I bet you are the same people that are worring about where the Saints are going to play this season. I hope you never become pet owners and when you pass on, if you believe in reincarnation, may you come back as a dog or a cat and live somewhere in the middle east…preferably Asia. I also am worried about the people who are starving, thirsty, or living in their own filth, but, why are they acting like animals. Instead of raping people or looting for that 27 inch flat screen, or shooting at rescue workers, they should be helping one another get thru this disater. Remember 9-11 how we all came together and United as ONE. What is the difference with what happened with Katrina?

  90. Carol (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 2:24 pm

Right after the World Trade Center disaster, a story appeared on the front pages of most papers that brought a sense of hope to many of us. It was the story of a cat who somehow managed to find a safe spot in the basement of one of the towers and there gave birth to a litter of kittens. The idea of not just survival but new life was a symbol of hope amid the ruins.

I have been on disability for several years and there are days when my husband is working or out of town that the only time I use my voice is to speak with my cats. They were my sole company and kept me from sinking into depression. They are my friends and family - or rather were, since both of them died of old age within a few months of each other not long ago.

We donated as large a sum as we could afford to help New Orleans and its people. But when I started to read about the abandoned and helpless pets my heart hurt, as I knew how hard it would be to have to make the choice - or have it made for me - of abandoning soemone who I had made my responsibility and who gave me only love and acceptance in return. So yesterday I went into PetSmart, which I knew was accepting donations to help the animals of New Orleans, solely to make a contribution. And as it turns out I was blessed in return, as I found two kittens in need of a home - and my home was desperately in need of two kittens.

Give and you shall receive - and I have always received much joy from my pets. I grieve for those who have lost theirs in this disaster, just as I grieve for those who are losing, partners, friends and family. Love doesn’t discriminate.

I am sadden to hear the senseless views regarding that animals should be saved first and people second. Life is precious to both and if both can be saved that would be ideal, but the sobbering reality is the people must be saved first. The people have names, they are parents, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends to someone.

Those who want to recuse the animals go for it. Ask HSUS and PETA to contribute the millions of dollars in donations that they get every year, which they spend it on animal political lobbying, for donation marketing and furthering their vegan campaign and demand of them to actually use the donors’ monies on animal rescue, the construction, operation and maintenance of real animal shelters. If they did maybe animals would not be left behind by their owners at times of a natural crisis. The local SPCAS do real work to shelter, feed and care of animals, whereas, HSUS and PETA do not.

How is it that “Bill” and “Scott’s” repulsive and backward statements(talk about “comment spam”!) get to stay on this board while Grace’s intellegent point-of-view gets removed. Censorship is an ugly thing but not nearly as ugly as those callous “rescuers” leaving that dog behind on that roof. What scum we are forced to share this planet with!

Excuse me but to the poster who said animals are being helped before people you are wrong. We have both(animal and people rescuers) doing the job.I am also sure that the people who are being rescued are happy that animal rescuers are there too. They may have lost their pets in the chaos.

THIS MESSAGE IS FOR JOHN- YOUR MESSAGE IS SAD, WHAT IF YOUR FAMILY,CHILDREN, OR EVEN BEST FRIENDS WERE EFFECTED IN THE STORM. NOTHING IS EVER FUNNY ABOUT DEATH, AND EVERY LIFE SHOULD BE IMPORTANT TO YOU. AND IF IT ISN’T THAN MAYBE YOUR LIFE SHOULD NOT BE ACCOUNTED FOR AND MAYBE YOU SHOULD FLOAT IN THE LOUISIANNA RIVER LIFELESS, AND SOMEONE WHO DOESNT EVEN DESERVE THIS TRAGEDY SHOULD TAKE YOUR PLACE IN LIFE. I HOPE GOD HAS MERCY ON YOU.. YOU’RE A DISGRACE

I read these posts and some are makeing me furious! I had to leave my 3 kitties at my home in Uptown New Orleans as I was working at a local hosptial through this disaster and only yesterday was able to get out. I was unable to return to my home before leaving to check on them/or the house because we (all hosp. employees) caravaned out and I really didn’t feel safe going alone into the great unknown.

I am now feverishly trying to contact friends in NO who have keys to my house to check on the kitties and the house. Don’t assume that people who left their pets had a choice about it. I was told I could not bring my animals to work during the disaster. I do know that they were alive and were refed on Tuesday as some brave friend trecked through the uptown water to get to them. I can only hope they hang on until I or someone else get back.

Animal Evacuation and Recovery Plan for New Orleans

PLEASE NOTE: THE PHONE NUMBER FOR THE LOUISIANA VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION IS 1-800-524-2996 OR 225-928-5862.

BATON ROUGE- The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
(LA/SPCA), the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association (LVMA), the
Louisiana Animal Control Association (LACA), and the LSU School of
Veterinary Medicine (SVM) are managing animal evacuations and recovery plans
for New Orleans pets and displaced animals.

    PETS TRAVELING WITH OWNERS

The LVMA is currently accepting pets at the Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette,
LSU in Shreveport, the Monroe Civic Center for small animals and the Ike
Hamilton Center for large animals in Monroe, the Farmer’s Market in
Alexandria, and the LSU Agriculture Center/Parker Coliseum in Baton Rouge.
Owners must be housed in a Red Cross shelter; owners are responsible for
caring for their animals, including feeding and cleaning. Animals will be
accepted 24 hours a day. Veterinarians will be on hand to handle any
    medical needs.

While owners are responsible for the feeding and cleaning of their pets at
the Parker Coliseum in Baton Rouge, the SVM, along with volunteers from the
Baton Rouge Veterinary Medical Association, will provide veterinary care.
If for some reason, an owner is unable to care for a pet sheltered in the
Parker Coliseum (e.g., the owner is housed in a special needs shelter), SVM
student volunteers will provide primary care, such as feeding and cleaning.
The East Baton Rouge Animal Control Center will be taking stray animals.

The Parker Coliseum will be staffed 24 hours a day by a supervising
veterinarian and student volunteers from the School of Veterinary Medicine.
Pets in the Coliseum will be given physical exams and Bordetella (kennel
cough) vaccinations. If a pet requires medical attention and veterinary
monitoring, it will be sent to the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine’s
    Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

PEOPLE WITH PETS WHO ARE CURRENTLY EVACUATING NEW ORLEANS

The LA/SPCA will transport animals from pick-up points in New Orleans to the
Lamar-Dixon Expo Center. The pick-up points have not yet been determined
and are being coordinated with the agency charged with transporting people
from New Orleans to other areas.

The Lamar-Dixon Expo Center, 9039 St. Landry Rd., Gonzales, La., will serve
as the primary staging area. Once the shelter is full, animals will be
moved to temporary shelters in other areas of Louisiana and Texas.

The LA/SPCA Dorothy Dorsett Mobile Veterinary Center will be at the
Lamar-Dixon Center to treat incoming animals as needed.

CONFINED PETS STILL IN DISASTER AREA

Beginning on September 1, residents who left pets in their homes may call a
hot line to leave information about the number of animals, species, and
their confined location. As soon as the hotline number is obtained, we will
advise the media. WE CANNOT ENTER NEW ORLEANS UNTIL APPROVAL IS GRANTED BY
    STATE OFFICALS.

    DONATIONS

Financial donations are being accepted to fund the animals’ care through the
Dr. Walter J. Ernst, Jr. Veterinary Memorial Foundation at the LVMA at
    1-800-524-2996.

A regional donation center is being established. Our needs include: large
air kennels and metal cages, leashes, disposable bowls, canned cat and dog
food, disposable litter pans, spray bleach, paper towels, sheets, towels,
locks, hoses, bottled water, trash cans, trash bags, pooper scoopers, cat
litter, extension cords, fans. The most urgent needs are kennels and
monetary donations. The media will be advised of the address once
determined. At least 175 animals are currently en route to Baton Rouge.

For more information or to make donations of the materials listed above,
please call the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine at 225-578-9900 (
    http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu) or the LVMA at

Scott, you surely have to be one of the most worthless people on earth, and I thought I’d met most of them. The way we treat animals reflects directly on the way we treat people, but I don’t mind telling you that people like you should just be shot for the sake of all of us. Eat shit and die. Sandra

Go back to the beginning of the posts and you will see Bill, John and Scott’s horrible posts about animals and much more. Not pleasant and you will see that when you check.

I heard that people were told that most hotels and all shelters would not allow animals, thus forcing them to leave their pets behind. You would think, under these types of circumstances, that people would adjust the ‘rules’ a bit, out of humanity for animals as well as their owners. The abandoned animals are just one more problem that has to be dealt with.

Since so many have wondered about the zoo, here is a link to a great article about both the Audubon Zoo and the Aquarium of the Americas. http://news.mongabay.com/2005/0830-new_orleans_aquarium.html Both are being maintained by heroic staff members. The article also contains an update about the 6 Gulfport Aquarium dolphins, who were evacuated to a Holiday Inn and Best Western swimming pool in advance of the hurricane. The pools were augmented with seawater and volunteers moved them in an attempt to keep them safe. Since the aquarium was completely destroyed, it was a good call. Some of the sea lions also survived and were taken in by SeaWorld. I read an article yesterday of one sea lion who was rescued during the hurricane by a couple 4 miles from the Aquarium. They saw her swept by their house on the waves. They risked their lives to get her in the house, and after the storm kept her hydrated in a kiddie pool and fed her with pilfered fish from neighborhood freezers. The search and rescue teams found all the inhabitants at that location and arranged for the sea lion, who’s name was Pocahontas, to be picked up by trained personel.

My husband(me too) has been so furious because of the thievery. Now let’s face it.They aren’t trying to get the food they want the big screen TV.We have no problem stealing food, water and clothes since they have none but that is alot of what is not being taken.I haven’t watched alot on TV but one picture I did see was a man beating a cop when he was caught stealing.

I read where some of the policemen just turned in their badges. They were not able to control these people. This was the beginning not a few days later where the people should be getting frustrated. The looting started right away. They wanted to be the first to get the best.

Thank’s so much for the info on the zoo.
For those that are calling the thugs in NO animals, please don’t insult the animals. Those thugs are below animal life and should be shot on sight.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers for the people of the Gulf. We live 3 hrs. from New Orleans and our area was not affected. But “we” are affected by their terrible lost of spirit. Over 400 evacuees are in our city and are grateful for food and shelter. They got out before the storm. Among our donations for the local evacuees and local animal shelter which is receiving animal evacuees from the shelters, we sent a donation to http://www.caaws.org. We read this group is working with the LSU vet school in caring for the animal evacuees. We also read on this blog site that a caring vet posted numbers to get in touch with LSU for your donations. Found this animal prayer one day that a lady found in her grandfather’s desk–author unknown–Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends the animals, especially for animals who are suffering; for animals who are overworked, underfed and cruelly treated; for all wistful creatures in captivity that beat their wings against bars; for any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry and for all that must be put to death. For it is written in the Bible according to Matthew “Whenever you refused to help one of these least important ones, you refused Me.” All beings matter! Our heartfelt gratitude for prayers and donations for the people of Louisiana and our neighbors to the east. Fred and Jennifer
