What with all the looting and chaos and destruction in our beautiful, beautiful city, this is almost enough to restore my faith in humanity…

Here’s a report from “Old Jefferson,” Jefferson Park in particular, located between Causeway and Clearview, just off Jefferson Highway. The area is not flooded and has surprisingly little wind damage, according to a source who stayed and rode out the storm. There has been no looting in the area, either. I can only post as a comment, so maybe someone can move this to a place where people looking for info on outlying areas can find it.
Also, you can pick up images on digitalglobe.com and try to discern where the flooding is relative to your home, if you’re unsure about it. From the image, it looks like not all of Uptown is dry- Carrollton looks like it has water… :-(

After a devastating flood 30 years ago in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia it was noted that the community formed local teams to aid others less fortunate on their own initiative and while effective they often lacked the necessary skills, equipment and coordination during and after the event.
Many people desperate to help out were left wondering in the streets.
In response to that crises the SES (Sate Emergency Service) was formed to provide community volunteers across the nation with the skills, equipment and planning to coordinate a (community) response to any major disaster and has worked exceptionally well ever since.

I pray for the victims of this storm. I went through the worse of Hurricane Andrew and it was nothing like what the people of New Orleans are going through. Their local civil authorities must be the most irresponsible and incompetent set of politicians to so poorly prepare for their citizens. I will never again thank of Florida’s politicians as simple attention seekers, when they go into their pre-hurricane planning before every storm.
I want to say that this is not a free country anymore we only pay for things that matter that benefit the president and that my friend was oil and now look our own country in the toliet cause of the GREED of wondering how we will pay for this disaster? well. today, we students here at deland highs school with the help of our other volusia county schools as well as staff are being asked to send a dollar per person to NEW ORLEANS to help with the hurricane relief efforts. i myself are sad for the people left in the wake of Katrina but are also kind of mad as well for the people who knew that this storm could be a killer but still sat and watched the storm come in. i mean i don’t mean to be rude or anything but people need to wake up. this city is on a plot of land that is a very low-lying piece of earth and they knew that if they stayed that they would be trapped and all the gangs and people are getting roudy and starting to complain about how the president can drop food to the people in IRAQ faster than the people in his own country and the truth is that were trying our hardest to help people but it won’t happen overnight. and people need to stop complaining so much and discover what really matters, LIFE! and once people discover that, they will see that they are lucky for just the shelter and the clothes on their backs. people shouldn’t have stayed to watch the storm, they should have left. i am truely sorry about this occurence but people need to wake up, what’s more important? people and life or materialistic possesions? the answer is PEOPLE AND LIFE.

I see the congressmen are unwilling to lose any sleep over Katrina. Why are they waiting until noon to convene?
Anyone else jarred by the justopostion of TV commercials hawking everything from cars to resort beach vacations while watching people without the basic neccessities? I call on all major bus companies in the US to send busses. At least near to New Orleans. Use the busses already in the city to move people out to staging areas further inland. Get those people out of there and allow them to bring their pets too. If the bus companies could hook up the churches who could find sponsers to take in families and individual that would be great. We have computer experts all over the place. Lets start getting networks and data bases set up showing where housing is available. Lets get communication systems up and running. I would not suggest going down to help out without being attached to a relief group. Don’t make yourself a victim. Pray for these people, volunteer at your local relief agency and open up your homes if you can. God help us all.

What people dont realize is that aid cannot happen overnight. It cannot happen in a week!Thousands of people became homeless overnight, there is NO way that anyone could have had facilities, food, cots, medical supplies, water, clothing for so many people in such a short amount of time. I have faith that the people of this country will come together and help, but patience is needed. Is it easy, hell no. I cannot imagine my infant son and wife and daughter in that situation, but I do know it will be the people, not the government, that will help everyone get through this. I pray that people can find the patienc to hold on until the releif can get to them.
I think that it is a Damn shame that we have a president who wants to take care of a country who are Natural Born Killers but will not take care of his own. I am amazed at the lack of government co-ordination for this disaster. Pray that the polititians and leaders can start accomplishing what needs to be done. Why aren’t the people of these towns being evactuated to closed military housing? There’s certainly plenty of them that would fill the need for safe, sanitary shelter, or at least set up “tent cities” for them? It’s going to be a long time (if ever) until they have a true home to return to, what good does it do to move them from “Superdome” to “Superdome”? The American people are ready to step in and assist their fellow countrymen by helping prepare extended or temporary housing as obviously stated on so many websites offering help and shelter. The People of New Orleans and surrounding areas are going to need lawyers to file suit against the Feds, for the preventable horror, this is uncalled for.
The government needs to delay the new Bankruptc law that is to go into effect this Oct 1 for those that are now suffering or these people are never going to be able to recover.

Unfortunately, this disaster has brought to light the fact that we have a large group of citizens who are not willing to take responsibility for their actions. They were told to evacuate but didn’t. They did not have jobs, cars or houses before the storm (but managed to have multiple children even though birth control is readily available. They have been living on governmnet handouts and now are angry because they cannot get their next handout quickly enough. I realize that there may be some deserving refugees, but the ones I see on tv make it hard for me to want to help anyone.

I am from the Uptown area of New Orleans and I was calling all houses in the area to see if I could find someone who stayed behind to report on looting in the area. I finally found someone who answered and it ended up being an elderly lady, Mrs Hills who is a diabetic, out of medicine and water, and unable to lift herself from her chair. As of 10:50 am 9/2 she is waiting to be rescued. I have spoken with medical personell who estimate she will be dead within a couple days. If anyone one know who to contact to help get her out,e do so. The area is dry and easily accesible except for some downed trees etc.

I have worked more than 60 hours a week for 30 years to support my family. Although my family barely scrapes by, I was so worried about the people that I donated several hundred dollars to the Red Cross this week. Then on tv, I see the people who were moved to the Astrodome acting like they have no responsibility for themselves and complaining. I wish the tv would show refugees who have a little appreciation for the help they get. Surely, there are some out there.
I knew years ago the first time I seen Bush he was an evil man, just like his father. These men are driven by greed and oil. I feel now after watching this for days that the government is making up excuses to leave these people there to die. It is as though if they live, the truth will come out, about Bush. When Florida was hit a few months ago, Bush was there immediately, is this because his brother resides there? Is it more convenient for him to save the rich and not the poor? How is it that a star Mr Conning Jr can go into the after math with no problems, but our own govermnet is too scared to do food drops to those poor people. If there was no way of saving these people starting on Monday evening the first thing the government should’ve done was start doing food drops. Thousands of people were told to go to the dome to get out of the storm. They were told this because most of those people use the city’s transportation, and had noway out. I am sure the majority did not choose to stay there if they would’ve had money and a car to get out. The government acts as though there has been no one outside of the city come in to New Orleans after the storm. How did all the reporters get there? How is it that our media community can act faster than our own government? This is to show all the commited Bush voters what you actually voted for “the devil”. This man has been screwing us for years and noone wanted to see it because he believes in god, the thing is you all have it wrong, he thinks he is god. I hope this devil pays for it in hell when he begs for eternity for water, and that does not come close to what he actually deserves. Americans we need to take a good look at our government and our lives and our children’s lives we cannot let the government kill off our own people for greed and money, anymore. We also cannot continue to fight other countries fights when we need to invest in our own people. It takes me 14 hours to drive to New Orleans, and I am in Indiana. It has been a 5 days, 120 hours, there is simply NO EXCUSES, and america cannot believe these lies any longer, and if you do your a damn fool. I cannot and will not understand what is going on in our country, but I will wait to see how many people die by Bush’s hands. God bless those people, and may god take care of the dead and dying. Another word about the people freaking out, how do you think your body would react to dehydration, and hunger? I would go crazy to after five days and so would every other upstanding citizen, especially women with children dying in front of them. We cannot say we know how they feel, because we never will.

…Are the europeans turning mad or something?? All you could see on Euro News are images of Bush hugging a mother and her girl In New Orleans. MSNBC announced before that 2 kids( new born and a 2 yr old!!) died overnight in the shelter. After everything is cleared up this guy should leave in shame the White House.

My heart is torn watching the misery and suffering. I am praying and ask for everyone else to pray for all the suffering ones. I ask the Lord to send angels to all those who need comfort and help.
