I may pop a blood vessel…

How do you send 88 police officers to the Convention Center to stop a mob from raping people and beating others only to have them beat back by the angry mob itself?

At some point, people in charge have got to come to their senses and realize that anarchy has reached the point beyond which order can be restored through civilized means and now must be restored at the point of gun by people willing to pull the trigger.

Those tourists in the French Quarter whose busses were commandeered? Eddie Compass (the Chief of Police) said that they’re now being preyed on as the try to walk to the Convention Center. And Nagin is now telling refugees that they can walk across the Crescent City Connection to the West Bank, where it’s drier, to try to find what relief they can.

Nice, you can’t handle the problem, so you’re going to encourage them to be someone else’s.

These people already burned down Oakwood Mall. You think they’re going to stop with that? Firefighters were shot at when they tried to put out the fire. These people are no longer people. They are rabid animals and they need to be put down.

Joe-can I send you my flaky green party friend that is going nuts insisting that some of the violence in NO (in particular the snipers) may be a terroist cell trying to disrupt oil supplies. He’s giving me the creeps.
This would be a good time for terriorists to take advantage of the havoc…but its so X files….

Oh for crying out loud, this is about the most asinine comment I have ever read. The animals shooting at copters and hospitals, looting Wall-Mart gun departments, and raping everything that looks appealing and helpless don’t need HELP.

They need to be ‘put down’. Thinking such as Tommy’s is why the animals think they can do exactly what they want. They are just ‘victims of circumstance’, and need our compassion. Well they are indeed ‘victims of circumstance’. Unhappily the circumstance is that they are sociopathic CRIMINALS.

I think the whole world is going crazy. First of all nothing in this world is black and white. The looting and murdhers and crime are horable and sensless. But do not combine that with the people that are struggling to stay alive. Those people still need our help and deserve to live. Until you are in that situation there is no way of knowing how you will deal with it. If you people out there want to get angry get angry at this country that has more compassion to a country that was raised to kill each other and at the same time will let its own people suffer. Bush is a heartless bastard. Bring our boys home. Help our people. Get your priorities right. I am proud to be an american is a feeling of the past.

    Venice beach:

It’s becoming that. One of the awful things about the social breakdown after a crisis is that everything just under the surface starts bubbling up.

The worst thing New Orleans will have to deal with is yet to come. You thought the racial tension was bad before?…

    Unbelieveable.

What is wrong with you people?

How many people–stranded, starving, sick and helpless–have to be raped or murdered before you would be willing to allow that the authorities should act?

The reason they haven’t the courage to meet unlawful force with lawful force is because of decades and decades of ninnies like you carping, from the safety and security of your own communities, about the dirty job that society must perform in order to keep you safe.

So now, it appears, you have achieved the society you wanted: One that can’t summon the gumption to protect its own citizens. Welcome to your utopia.

We are lucky that God spared the area and let the hurrican move on faster. Imagine if the hurrican had hung around for two days….. As for calling people animals, that is an insensitve and ignorant statement. If you were in the situation, you would feel the same way and resort to such desperate measure. I agree with the blogger that you shouldn’t call people animals, because they are desperate displaced “black” people. Ofcourse, you look on tv and see all (about 99%) of the victims are black. They didn’t remain because they wanted too’ it was because like now, they had no where or financial means to get out. The dead are those people, too poor to escape with their lives. What bugs me the most is how it seems when Bush Jr (doesn’t deserve to be called president), circled around in AF 1, he was more concerned about the “precious” french Quarters, go figure. Lives are at stake, people are starving, dying and that MF is worrying about the Fuc.. French Quarters and precious real estate.

  21. jujube (unregistered) September 1st, 2005 7:16 pm

You argue the racist card, but the fact if the matter that if the refugees are hugely black, and the raping and murdering is refugee on refugee, then it isn’t “those blacks” doing it to the whites, but rather amongst themselves. And we here on the outside, black and white and everything else, are outraged that the strongest force isn’t being used to stop it. The people who are committing crimes against innocent people are sociopathic evil criminals and DESERVE to be met with whatever force is required to stop them. Even when you are starving and terrified, there is no reason to rape and murder the innocent just because you can.

Some were too poor to get out, some paid no attention to the warnings, and yes, like it or not, some were too wrapped up in their own worlds to even notice what was going on. Most likely the ones who are preying upon the innocent now out in the open are those who prey upon them in the shadows in non-crisis times. And it doesn’t matter what color they are. Evil is color blind.

How is it a ‘natural disaster’, a tragedy, has turned into a political debate? The sad truth.. this will become part of the dem. vs. rep. political agenda and the individuals who actually need help will be swept under a rug..

Be honest with yourself, there is no excuse for the behavior of those who are looting for luxury items (t.v.s,etc.), shooting, burning, raping and overall behaving like animals. (Actually, I have pets with better manners.) No one would allow this type of behavior to be exhibited in their home whatever the circumstances… yet it’s condoned now. Don’t think for a minute there weren’t individuals who chose to stay behind with the intent of ‘getting something’ out of this. Having experienced the aftermath of a hurricane and flood… I promise you there is always someone looking to profit off of another’s loss. If it’s not the thief who stayed behind to steal it will be the businessperson price gouging flood victims. Yet, if you look past the bad there is good happening.

New Orleans will rebuild. Someone said it already, this is a 300 year old city that has survived floods, disease,war..and still throws one hell of a party!

You deserve to be in NO testing the limits of your insular world view. Maybe you could magically trade places with the desperate BLACK woman who was begging on national TV for someone to come and protect her from the ‘animals’. It’ll be interesting to see how the theft/rape/murder statistics of this 5 day disaster matches up against any given Mardi Gras…

and I’m not trying to be clever here.

A lot of nasty business is swept under the rug in the interests of not scaring the straights, on any given day, and recent events have made this more problematic.

And yes, marshall law is needed, and curfews, so that people can start to feel safe again. Anyone can get whatever salvaging is needed for survival done during daylight hours, don’t you think?

It’s time for all the elected officials to stop wandering around in circles, blaming each other, and crying for the camera….

I am sending a contribution to the Salvation Army which always works with the less fortunate members of society. I am sure they will spend my money wisely and actually help some poor soul in some small way.

“If you were in the situation, you would feel the same way and resort to such desperate measure (sic).”

No, Lou, as a matter of fact I wouldn’t.

However, as you did point out, black people comprise many of the VICTIMS, the folks getting raped, murdered and robbed. I’ve no doubt you’re right about that, since it’s clear that the majority of the people left in NO are black.

Now, I don’t know how many of the ‘animals’ perpetrating these crimes are black, but here’s what I think: WHO GIVES A SHIT?!? A thug is a thug, dumbass.

As DougF has pointed out, normal people like you and I and so many of the the tragic refugees we’re seeing on TV (black and white and all other shades) AREN’T the ones shooting people, terrorizing medevac ‘copters and children’s hospitals and rescue personnel, raping women, mugging hapless tourists, burning down shopping malls and forming vicious gangs.

The people doing all that are different ON THE INSIDE. IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT COLOR THEY ARE ON THE OUTSIDE. THEY ARE SOCIOPATHIC CRIMINALS!

And guess what? I’d bet you money Jujube is right: they were sociopathic criminals before the drowning of New Orleans, too–they were just more clandestine about it then. They are CRIMINALS, I repeat, taking advantage of the breakdown of social order to do whatever the hell they want, just as usual. Only, yes, openly now. Without hindrance. Lettin’ it all hang out, so to speak.

And I’ll tell you something. THEY aren’t suffering. They are HAVING FUN.

And they eat liberal weenies like you for breakfast, Venice Beach. So go on down and help out! I DARE you! I double dare you!! If you actually achieve any good I’ll cheer; and if you find out the hard way how wrongheaded you are, I’ll sing at your funeral while the marauders laugh their asses off.

Folks like you and Chris Stevens are the true racists here. I note how quick you were to assume aaaall the folks committing these terrible acts of violence are black! I note how quickly you assume some of us wish the authorities would drop them in their tracks “because they’re black”, rather than for the REAL reason: they are violent criminals committing horrible acts of greed and cruelty. You’re whining and arguing about race issues instead of supporting those who want to stop the violence and rescue the victims…many, perhaps even most of whom are black. You care more about the thugs than their victims. YOU are twisted. YOU are the problem too.

  34. G. Hager (unregistered) September 1st, 2005 8:04 pm

These people shooting at rescuers were probably already criminals. I know the turd that beat my girlfriend unconscious in the aftermath of Hurricane Fran had a violent rap sheet that was long enough to cover a kingsize bed. If they shoot at rescuers, shoot back and aim to kill. Better a hundred more guilty corpses than one more innocent one.

  37. G. Hager (unregistered) September 1st, 2005 8:31 pm

Take it from this “colored” fellow: Don’t mistake a hard line against crime for racism or classism. The people being hurt the most by these thugs are of the same class and from their own community. They’re preying on the ones who aren’t stealing, raping and murdering.

  38. Steve (unregistered) September 1st, 2005 8:37 pm

Time to look longer view folks. Fact is, many unlucky, decent tourists will die in this disaster, while plenty of truly evil, raping, thieving, humans-in-name-only, who stayed behind to take advantage of the situation, will be saved. It is chaos in New Orleans. We can all hope justice will be served as much as possible, but justice is not happening tonight. It is nuclear war without fallout.

I use that analogy now because it is appropriate. Society has broken down, and the breakdown is seeping and spreading like the floodwater. I think this can be laid more at the feet of the local and state governments — which were catastrophically unprepared — than the feds, though we must remember that thousands would have died anyway (perhaps not if the levees were competently built and managed — another fact we will debate for years). In a nuclear blast, society would temporarily break down, and I certainly hope the US government would reestablish itself. It certainly will here, though I for one will live the rest of my life with little faith that my government can help me in any dire situation.

Katrina, like a nuke, will randomly slay the wicked and the meek.

But how do we respond to crisis in America? On Tuesday, when it was not yet clear that New Orleans would become Troy, I would not have voted to shoot looters. Tonight, I agree totally with Joe B. (except I won’t call them animals, just HINOs. Hey, can I start a new acronym here?) Tomorrow, the National Guard must ruthlessly put down all lawlessness. If they kill thousands themselves, so be it — it seems likely that most will die in the swamp next week, and anyway, they will be only a part of the awful toll. Ruthlessness will enable rescuers to save more of the innocent, even if a few innocents then get caught in the melee. Knowing Guardmen and soldiers, there are no men I would trust more with life and death decisions.

This makes many of us uncomfortable, but we must remember we are at a critical point in American history. It will be remembered. What happens if order isn’t restored in short order, and the city is totally lost? If that happens, how can any of us believe in America again? Why should we pay taxes? Why should the world look to us? The consequences will ripple through the decades and cause the world to sink.

America is Rome of the modern world, the superpower, the leader. New Orleans is our Pompeii. Can we survive? Only if we act like the leaders we are.

We must take a long view. My life and your life are both temporary. We must ensure that the United States survives us all. In its more dire times, the country has always been firm in restoring order, and has been stronger for it. In New York in 1864, and elsewhere in the Civil War, federal troops shot rioters and looters without mercy. Our country was saved — moreover, created, in that crisis. In 1906, in San Francisco, looters were summarily executed. The city was almost as decimated as New Orleans is now, but order was never seriously threatened. Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures, or else I fear we will all slowly sink into Dark Ages indeed.

    Steve in Princeton

(Please don’t get snarky about my analogies, I know they aren’t perfect. I only want to share these thoughts. Writing logical, complete sentences is caming me down right now since I’ve given blood, given money, and still can’t sleep. Oh, and HINOs, not animals, please.)

Why anyone cares about a looter stupid enough to steal electronic equipment in all of that water is beyond me.

Clearly they do not understand that they are leaving NO with the clothes on their backs and nothing else. When and if they ever come back everything they know and have will be gone.

But we can manage to distribute food on every corner of this earth under all kinds of circumstances, the road side bombs in Baghdad come to mind, and we have people dying in the streets with no water for days. We know there are people in hospitals desperate to be evacuated — and a sniper stops us? Am I still in the USA? You don’t need permission or an OK to fire back at a sniper. Why couldn’t FEMA have dispatched the NG to facilitate the evacuations? And not today, Thursday, they should have been moving on Tuesday when the storm passed.

This country is better than the chaos exhibited in NO.

  43. Warbard (unregistered) September 1st, 2005 10:21 pm

First of all, how come there is always someone out there who has to play the race card?

This is not a black or white thing this is a people thing. And it is a pathetic thing indeed to look for a way to divide human beings when Lord knows we should be uniting as Americans and Humans. People need to get off that crutch.

For those of you who wish to go into N.O. with guns blazing, shooting down the “animals”, don’t you think their is enough death already?

The fact is, that those “animals” can easily be any one of us if the roles were reverse. It is easy to say “I wouldn’t do that!” when you are on the sidelines looking in. Granted, people with better discipline and morals may fare better, but how far will it take you when utter Chaos embraces you?

Law Enforcement should deal with this one situation at a time. If they have to defend themselves or another person and someone dies for their “animalistic” actions, then that particular death is warranted, but don’t wish for more death than we Americans already have to live with.

All the people are not looting they are just trying to survive by breaking into walmart anyway what would they do with the stuff left in walmart anyway ? Just think if you had nothing for four days would you care to do what ever it took to feed your children since the us government don’t give a hoot about american born people. I must say that this is the biggest shameful thing that could happen to the americans today. The New Orleans dome people have had no water , no food for four days what do you expect from these citizens of the US. I hope the president sees how selfish he really is not being down there in the stick in the mud places. How SHAMEFUL. I hope and pray that this NEVER happens again to US citizens. The elderly in wheel chairs dead where is our pride in letting the dead have dignity what put out like trash in AMERICA???? WHAT???? I understand the living needs rescued Yes I agree but the dead people are just as important. I hope that this will be resolved soon. St Louis, MO raised 5 MILLION Dollars for this and I pray it gets there like tonite. Someone needs to bring a helicopter and drop food and water down to those people at the dome to restore order since everyone claims it chaos! Imagine:

You hear about the mandatory evacuation on Sunday. You don’t have a car. You don’t have money for a plane ticket, bus ticket, rental car.
You have children. You have family members and friends who can’t get out either.

No one offers you anything, except a seat in the Superdome, if you can get there. If there is room for you.

Katrina hits. Whatever safe spot you thought would protect you gets pounded by the storm. You think you are going to die.

You don’t. Maybe it’s chance, maybe you fought for it, but you survive Monday.

Then the levees burst and the Lake pours in. Your safe spot fills with water. You think you’re going to die.

You don’t, for whatever reason. You find dry land.

Wednesday comes, its supposed to be hump day. You still have no food or water or place to sit down or cool off. It stinks. You see your first dead body. Up close and in person, and drowned corpses are decidedly unattractive. And then you see another. And then you try to stop counting. You don’t want to be one.

You just want to get out. They left you behind to face Katrina and they don’t seem to be coming back. Just as you give up hope, you hear they are evacuating the Superdome. You make it there to find there are tens of thousands of other people who got your hot tip.

You see the buses. You push forward with the crowd.

You are not a criminal. You are hot, you are hungry, thirsty and scared.

Now, those of you who say “open fire and sort it out later,” are you ready to die?

I’m a former NYer. I had close friends in the PATH station. I had patients die. My aunt was at 7 WTC before it collapsed.

The media and the political debate thrive on rhetoric and generalization. People die based on rhetoric and generalization.

We were all so pleased that thousands evacuated. I know I never gave a single thought to the people that couldn’t evacuate, because I have a car and I know how to follow clearly stated warnings.

However, when I think of my 64 y/o friend who had to walk to Brooklyn on 9/11, of my cousin who walked to Harlem from Wall Street, of my Aunt who we didn’t hear from until Friday, I remember, it’s not about the news clips and the rants of people who got out and are worried about their THINGS. It’s about the people who have been abandoned on the streets of an American city. People who may be shot because they are part of a crowd with every right to be angry.

It’s not enough to throw some money in a donation box and cleanse your conscience. Make plans now to help out in the long run. Because it will be a very long run. I gave up fear and anger at the system after Amaduo Diallo. Now I just try to think one person at a time.

Because that one person could be you.

I cannot believe how many utterly stupid people there are.

There are plenty of people in NO without homes, food, and water who have lost their families and are NOT killing, raping, and looting. They need to be taken care of, gotten out. The others who are killing and raping (I’m not going to include looting because plenty of people would ‘help themselves’ to take care of their family) need to be taken care of - in another way. These are the same individuals who crowd our prisons, repeat offenders who KNOW right from wrong and just don’t care.

Yes, Bush is an idiot. I’m a member of the military and lean a lot more toward liberal than conservative. I think that we need to learn to take care of the people in our country - feeding, clothing, health care - in a time of crisis OR NOT- before we try to take care of people in other countries.

Oh, and for the people blaming God or the Last Days:

Read your bible, Jesus calmed storms, God controlled the Red Sea.

Does any of this seem controlled or calm?

People like you are why God has such bad PR as it is.

Here I am sitting in California, one major shake away from a natural disaster ourselves. Thinking I would have more empathy, I am ashamed to see a major city of our country fall into anarchy. The Jazz city, the most important US port for all kinds of commodities such as grain, a fabled city that is part of our national pride fall into anarchy. What are we to think? People were asked to leave the city. People say, oh but they are poor. This is bullshit. Even illegal aliens can manage to move throughout our country with very little effort or cash. Hello Greyhound? Hello trains? Buddy with a car? I wonder how much cronyism and corruption lead to the complete lack of local and state support for the hurricane. People are blaming the federal government but I am really ashamed of the local people. What the fuck? Raping, shooting at aid workers? Blaming everyone but themselves. It is a national disgrace and the world is watching. How do you think people in your city would perform in similar circumstances?

I realize I am only one voice and it may stop at me. I would like everyone who reads this to look at where they are right now. You have a computer. You are probably drinking something, ready for lunch or just got done with lunch. Can go and get a drink of water at any time, or go to the bathroom when your blatter gets full. I don’t care what color you are, I don’t care how old you are. I don’t care how much money is in your bank account at any given time. We are all children of our heavenly father. We are here for the same purpose. These people who are STRANDED with nothing need HELP! I can’t do anything but send money. I can’t do anything except give all I have to help some of these people survive to see the next day. I am so disgusted by what is going on. That we can sit back and say…oh they are just black…who cares! REPENT! Does it matter what color you are? Let me take away everything you hold dear…your food your water…and stick you outside with no air conditioning for 5 days and see how happy you are! I pray that they get help soon. I pray that my $3,000 helps feed anyone who needs it, black white old or new born…we all deserve the same treatment…we need to come together as a nation, not divide as a human race. Go out right now…buy a gallon of water, put all you have to help those people survive…this is about survival.

Having lived through a civil war as a young child in somalia, I know what it feels like to be in that situation. Everyone should be helping out in anyway possible (i.e donations, volunteering etc). Instead of breeding hate and killing each other lets take the initiative to show what being human is all about. Lets show the good side of Gods creation.

  57. Bonzo (unregistered) September 1st, 2005 11:51 pm

    Jennifer,

Are you trying to justify lawlessness? Stealing/looting/whatever to feed yourself and your family is one thing. Raping, killing, and beating the defenseless simply because there are no consequences for doing so is another. There needs to be distinguishment between those who are trying to survive in the situation and those who are taking advantage of it.

Do you think those who are raping and killing are doing so because of hunger or thirst? These people are sick. They are criminals. When this tragedy has run its course, this fact will remain.

It’s downright scary what is going on in New Orleans right now. I would be scared out of my mind if i were there and and can only imagine how much anarchy has really taken over. More should have been done by the govt, alot more and alot quicker. I also NOW dont have much confidence in the US, and the presidents response in my opinion has been weak, weak, weak. I hope and pray that my family & my pets are never in a situation like the folks in NO find themselves right now, for it’s clear we would be on our own. A rude awakening to us all.

I think that the cover has been pulled form over the hidden neglect of this country in a way of Katrina to let the world know how the black people of the world is ignored. I know some of you say here goes that racism thing but you have to be blind not to see the niglect of this cities poor to substitue other world need instead of ours. Are we realy ready for a disaster? Just think if this was a terrorism attack and mind you this is just a small portion of our nation. Just who realy is stooting? Could it be someone out to prevent the rescue effort? Do we really know just what is hapening? The news media make it apear to be just blacks looting but there were whites as well that did not get viewed as much. The news metia need to be fare in reporting the news and not be so onesided. If you is a true American you will not see a color issue here but a human issue.

I say restore order anyway possible, get everyone out and blow the rest of New Orleans up, don’t get me wrong I love New Orleans, it was a beautiful southern city, perhaps the most beautiful southern city except for San Antonio, and damnit I still wanted to go to mardi gras next year, but to rebuild a city that UNDER SEA LEVEL is just idiotic, it was idiotic to before the hurricane and now Katrina has finally shown the world why its stupid to have a city under sea level, it dont make no sense! and if you do rebuild it and make the levees stronger and higher then in 50 or 100 years a stronger, slower hurricane will do it all over again, word of advice for all residents of New Orleans and maybe parts of MISS. and Alabama, MOVE away from Coastal areas!!

Regarding the mention of terrorist cells creating the havoc with the sniping, no, it may not be coming from individuals who are connected with al Qaeda, however they could be black Muslim converts with terrorist sympathies (like the DC snipers). I think that is very possible.

I know they are hungry, thirsty and scared, but I wish they’d give credit where it is due. There are a lot of people there already and more rushing to do what they can, but it seems like they just want things to happen right now. Our hearts are breaking for you all, but please be patient and realize this disaster is MAJOR and your life will never be the same.

I completely agree with the original blog entry here. The commenters who urge “help” for those who are raising hell in New Orleans all have something in common & I don’t mean mercy (they may be merciful, but in this case it is misguided). It is ignorance. To argue for empathy & compassion for people who take advantage of a natural disaster, to use it as an excuse to act out their most depraved urges, is to be utterly ignorant to the cost of such barbarism. The rioters & rapists are not animals; I’ve had several pets & seen animals in the wild before. All of them were much more well-behaved than the hordes of two-legged trolls disrupting the rescue efforts.

I grew up in San Francisco (mostly), & I’m old enough to remember both the 1989 quake & the Rodney King beating. The latter event particularly was a real wake-up call. Unless you have been through chaos, you don’t have any real insight on how to deal with it. And when it happens, lethal force is often–almost always–the only way to put it down. The police should be free to gun down the rioters in New Orleans, & nearby military units should be mobilized to do the same. It’s the ultimate deterrent. If you were planning to break into some store the hurricane had left alone & then saw a pile of bodies & a SWAT team in body armor, would you chance it?

    I know I wouldn’t.

  65. Bing (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 12:45 am

I visited New Orleans a few years ago, I came across wonderful people and horrible ones. The vast majority of these people are good people that try hard everyday to be kind and generous.
Ten days for Mardi Gras, a typical yahoo, looking for fun. We camped in the outskirts of the city, in probably one of the poorest sections of town, needless to say, they’re weren’t many tourists staying near us. The hospitality we recieved was incredible. The owner of a ramshackle half painted convienence store making us two dollar catfish subs, the minimum wage dishwasher making sure we knew the best ways in, and out of downtown, and a woman that we weren’t sure was speaking english or not until the thick accent got acclimated to our ears letting us use her bathroom. People that didn’t expect anything other than a thank you and a conversation.
Living in the northeast hadn’t prepared me for kindness like that.
Having been drinking heavily one night, we stumbled three blocks out of the french quarter at two in the morning onto a street that was lined on both sides by drab five story projects. A local, wearing chains and a vintage michael jacksonesque red leather jacket, plying his trade on the opposite corner, called out that he’d protect us, not to worry, and about ten minutes after, waiting for our cab, a group of three guys approached us, and low and behold, the guy in the red leather coat came over and confronted them. Even a drug dealer in a project went out of his way to help us.
Now, these people, who were poor by Lousiana standards, now have even less. The looting? most of that stuff was going to be inventoried on an adjusters tally sheet anyway. I can’t blame some of the poorest people in the country for that. But the raping and shooting of people? take them down. These innocent, kind people should not be subjected to that, especially in circumstances like this.
My heart is broken to think those nice people, that offered what they could to undeserving shmucks like us, are going through this.
Could this have been prevented? I don’t know. one thing I do know is that Bush stayed down on the ranch until wednesday, his scheduled day to leave anyway. No one can tell me that he can be as effective there as in the Whitehouse, in the capital, overseeing and motivating the government to do all it can to help these desperate souls. Shame on you GW. You’ve now shown what your priorities are.

I have never seen anything like this here in America in my lifetime. I cry my eyes out when I see the reports from New Orleans! I feel at a loss as to what to do, other than to donate. I have been disilusioned by politics and politicians for a long time now, and now am just disgusted! I don’t see how this couldn’t have been handled better at a national level. Everything being done now seems like a band-aid effort, too little, and coming far too slow. It’s as if there was no thought as to when the hurricane struck what might be done, or supplies readied and waiting to go, evacuation centers set up ahead of time in other states. How in the wealthiest country in the world, with some of the greatest minds, can there be people dying in the streets from dehydration?!! Oh, and the as for the water break that caused further destruction, why on earth this barrier made only to handle a level 3 hurricane?! The residents of New Orleans live in a bowl for heavens sake! I listened to a report where this exact question was presented, and you know what the National Guard answer was? Basically it boiled down to money, they spent the minimum to do the job, and just hoped it would hold. We can spend BILLIONS on wars, but we invest the minimum here at home?! I don’t care if Scooby Doo, Clinton, or Bush is in office, doesn’t anyone get beyond the conservative vs. liberal crud to see what a horrible job this leader is doing?! Forget what party his with for a moment. Has our economy improved? The national debt? Anyone know why we are in war in Iraq when we couldn’t find any weapons of mass destrucion? Is it to fight terrorism, well, how do you fight in just one country against terrorism when it is world wide? Is it a humanitarian effort? If so where are we going to war next? Perhaps the President should obtain a list from Amnesty International? Is it to cry out for the blood shed in 9-11? Why aren’t we in Afganistan then? Why haven’t we gotten to the leader of the group that comitted those attrocious, disgusting crimes?! Just like our leader had no plan ahead of time for Iraq, he and those under him had no plan for a predicted disaster like that in New Orleans.

You people need a serious wake up call. Every one of you. You sit behind your safe computer and complain about every current event as it’s told. If you don’t like the situation, don’t fall back on the crutch of complaining. Give solutions. If you’re not smart enough to create solutions, you’re probably not qualified to complain.

  70. Sunny (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 12:58 am

I did give a solution, way back in November of last year, get Bush out of office. I voted, and still the worst president I can recall is still in office.

  71. George (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 1:01 am

EVERY politician who voted *for* tax relief for wealthy Americans and *against* funds to protect Gulf ports/cities and the sinking levees should be gathered up and dumped in New Orleans immediately without the benefit of their pampering advantages. Right before dark. With no shoes, a glow stick superglued to their back, and no access to the slowly arriving water and food. See if their priorities and sense of urgency shift any. Also see if they change their opinion about looting for food and survival supplies after several desperate days.

I am sad and embarrassed to be governed by people who lack the foresight and common sense to prioritize funds to protect their own people and infrastructure. I’m also angry at and disgusted by a president who doesn’t step foot in over 4 days in a region beset by such a horrendous calamity. Granted, his expensive shoes don’t get mussed in a fly-over.

  72. Ron (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 1:04 am

I am stunned by the lack of effective planning and response by the Federal government to the gut-wrenching tragedy in the Gulf Coast, especially in New Orleans. When Tropical Strom Katrina crossed the Florida peninsula, gathered strength, then emerged into the Gulf of Mexico as a Category 5 hurricane, the National Hurricane Center and other reputable weather organizations predicted several days in advance that the storm would wreak utter devastation on the central Gulf Coast and would almost certainly impact the highly vulnerable New Orleans area.

Having possession of this detailed information so far in advance, why didn

  73. Brad (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 1:06 am

I’m going to defend Bush for a moment - a lot has been made of his decision to divert federal funds away from levee repair, but - seriously, who hasn’t passed the buck on this issue? Every political system has its weak points, and the weakest spot in a democratic bureaucracy is long-term planning; every politician can toss the expensive, long-term issues to whoever is elected next. In fact, long-term investment is frowned upon by the electorate: how dare you spend my tax money on something that might not affect me?

And then something like this happens.

So, be fair: if you’re going to bash Bush, you have to bash everyone before him, too.

  74. Bing (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 1:20 am

Bash Clinton for having the foresight to restructure FEMA into a well oiled machine that stepped into Florida after Andrew and did one of the most spectacular jobs ever seen in disaster relief? It’s been gutted since then. Bush gutted it, and now people are dying. I blame the storm for the water, but the response? I blame a gutted system, now unable to cope with a predicted disaster. The 82nd airborne division should be there as the only self sufficent division in our armed forces, based only a few hundred miles away in georgia, but, gosh golly, they was trees to be chainsawred at the ranch. Not to mention the energy policy that did nothing to stem the rise of gas prices, now this to cripple the nation with 4 dollars a gallon for gas and rising. Shame.

  75. seamus (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 1:22 am

I was living in Kendall (south of Miami) when Andrew hit, and the disaster relief by FEMA and the National Guard was as excellent as could be expected.

  78. Mary (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 1:34 am

I’ve just been reading these comments, and I’d like to start by saying that I was born & raised in New Orleans, and lived just below the 9th ward all of my 30+ years, and what I have to say is from the voice of someone who has seen and lived it all down here.
First, we are getting info that the nat’l news probably hasn’t (or won’t) receive. We see the front lines, and it is an unbearable, appalling picture. We moved to Baton Rouge over 3 yrs ago to the peace we have found here, primarily to escape the never-ending, never-improving mess that New Orleans had become. My 70 yr old mother was brought up here to me, as I was unable to get her out, even before they started contraflow on the interstate. She came here with 3 bags, and the clothes on her back, and that’s all she has left now. She has no home anymore. Same for my sister & her family, who came in two cars on their way to Tenn. and now have one, since one got stolen in Jackson, MS. They lived in St. Bernard, where I grew up, and the small parish is being referred to as a total loss. There are still several thousand people in St. Bernard, standing by Bayou Bienvenue, just waiting, and waiting, and waiting. They, like the people in New Orleans, are hungry, thirsty, hot-as-hell, and helpless. However, when the nice media people fly over them to gawk like they’re looking at exhibits in a zoo, there is no chaos. They are not raping, beating, and shooting. They all stand together, and are begging for help that simply won’t come. I understand we have the Guard coming in, and the choppers flying over, but what WE are seeing up here is that the immediate focus has to be on the “situation” at the convention center. Today, our Governor gave word that the Guard/Police can and will shoot to kill. St. Bernard is a very diverse little parish. Black, white, young old, and everybody in between, and they manage quite well to live in harmony there. Clearly we cannot condone the excuse of “oh, they’re desperate, frustrated, etc..”, since reality shows there are many more, in many other places that are desperate & frustrated, and have not resorted to behaving like anarchist animals, and yes, animals is a good word, but honestly, it is not a strong enough word.
I don’t give a shit if you are black, white, or any nationality or race. No human beings should be subjected to any of this, and this statement extends to those who remember that they are still human beings, and there is no circumstance, no matter how dire, to excuse these behaviors.
Today, we watched as our beloved and valuable Children’s Hospital in New Orleans was virtually inundated with threats of violence, with nurses and staff scared to death, yet staying on to look out for the hundreds of children there. That, is how humans act. Humans have souls, hearts, feelings, and deep down, we all have a dormant instinct to care for & respect our fellow man/woman when situations like this occur. Today, here in Baton Rouge, where the people have hearts bigger than anything, where we have taken in thousands upon thousands of refugees from New Orleans, we watched the employees at the news station & court house who are continually taking donations round the clock for these people (FYI- these are many busloads brought in from New Orleans), have to leave & go home since some of the refugees decided purse snatching and stealing their cars would be a cool idea. Today, our mayor said he wants out of the refugee business, and he wants them out. He said we will not allow them to turn this place into a “convention center” situation, and our police are carting the criminals they have caught off to a new evacuation center called parish prison. And, ironically enough, they’ll definitely get meals, water, and showers, since the Constitution gives anyone taken into lawful custody these rights- rights which the people standing quietly on an old bayou bridge in St. Bernard do not have. So, I will be more than happy to dispel any rumors that anyone would like to know about, should you wish to ask.
Lastly, whoever Venice Beach is, let me welcome you to what a large part of New Orleans is on a daily/hourly basis. I gather this seems quite shocking to you, Venice Beach, but trust me, this is simply because the masses have been crammed together in one location, and their dirty deeds are out now for all the world to see. And I agree with a post that I read earlier- I would also like to dare you to step one foot near that convention center. They will eat your ass alive. And, again, it would be for all the world to see. I hope you, unlike many of us, even up here, have clean running water to maintain fresh towels to mop up the blood from your bleeding, ignorant heart.
To everyone else, what you see is a sad reality brought into close-up view by the kind media. Perhaps the “shoot-to-kill” order/request, if enforced and acted upon vigorously, will be the salvation of thousands of “HUMANS”.

  79. DARING (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 1:49 am

Listen to all those that would like to go to NO for peace. Mostly the Venice Beach people, thanks but you guys aren’t from there. You go down there preaching and telling people how it should be and you will get shot. NO isn’t a safe place. To all those that want to help please do but be carefull, you go in the wrong place and thats it, NO has always been like that even before the disaster.

i knew there were some not-so-swooft and heartless people in this country, but omg… i feel dumber for having read this nonsense - blacks, whites, republicans, democrats… i honestly feel sick to my stomach.
i really think the best answer is prayer. prayer for everyone - the families that are suffering from this and for the hate that is surfacing as a result. or perhaps as with the criminals being criminals before this happened and just now being more bold about it, maybe the hate was already there as well. hmmm
now, that being said, i would like to add that i am confused and would like clarification on exactly how the haters who voice their opinions here think they are any better than the people they are expressing their hate towards. on one hand, someone is expressing anger and hate - on the other hand…oh wow, how bout that…someone is expressing anger and hate. lol - hate is hate. it is the absence of love, caring, and compassion.
you can choose to believe it or not, but what the people of NO and the rest of America need the most is our prayers. God always has and always will take care of His people.
now go ahead and say what you want, cause you will anyway. but if you are putting your faith into anyone or anything other than God to get NO AND America through this, then you are the one in need of help.

  84. Jagged Edge (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 2:40 am

I have had enough with the finger-pointing. One of the largest natural disasters in our country’s history, and still the Liberal press and left wing jaw-jackers are attempting to politicize it…

What we are witnessing is a lack of community, and sociatal helplessness compounded by a natural disaster folks! I am reading news clips about the bodies laying around, and bitching because no one is doing anything about it. But there it is, right in front of the person bitching and the act of bitching is a more approptiate response to the problem than fixing it. A COMMUNITY of caring individuals would come to the conclusion that they could DO something about it to help rectify the situation, rather than stand there wringing their damn hands.

The sheer attitude of helplessness has pushed me right to the edge. That and the opportunistic segment that feels entitled to pillage, rape and assault during a time of national crisis. A true COMMUNITY would not perpetrate that kind of behavior - moral or otherwise. A COMMUNITY would have gathered itself up, applied the combined strength of itself to work together and survive.

Yet we see the selfish, and blaming, stream across the TV screen daily. From the lady wanting FEMA to “get her a trailer” so she doesn’t have to live at her brother-in-law’s, to the chanting “help me” throngs that are taking no initiative whatsoever to coordinate, organize and expedite this operation. NO, they would rather sit on their hands, complain, and finger-point.

As Joe B pointed out, there is a rabid mentality working here. This, not coordination, is the root of the rescue operation’s problem. NO ONE had a crystal ball to put the resources on the edge of the affected areas prior to the destruction! The Liberal press would have you believe that they knew this was going to happen, and to this incredible extent. They assume that FEMA has magic wands to wave that make all the bad go away. *POOF* All better now.

Un-Friggin believable folks. To see the absolute lawlessness of a population, the entitlement attitude stuck right in our faces, and the endless whining of helplessness has me “Ready to pop a blood vessel”….

Thanks Joe and all for giving me a venue to vent. I needed it.

For the Southern idiots that believe that God spared them by making the hurricane pass quickly…look around you? Blame God for your
misfortune, but don’t blame the National Guard
and the Police for terminating your looting problem. New Orleans, like the south, will never
    rise again.

Hey Now! Im on your side with the whole “god” thing Waylon but dont be dissin us southerners, not all southerners are idiots just like theres alot of “northerners” that are so just shut the hell up on that one, im so sick of people bashin the South

Just a note to Waylon (is that like Waylon Jennings, the Southern Country Music singer??????) 1st, I can sympathize with how difficult 1st grade English/Grammar classes can be, so I know you won’t mind me correcting you, since your statement seems to say that the police & National Guard have terminated the looting problem. This is NOT the situation. Please forgive the multisyllabic words, as I don’t mean to confuse you, I work with lower-education individuals and certainly don’t hold it against you. I’m sure there has to be some adult literacy tutors in your Northern area. As for New Orleans, their fate is uncertain, I agree, however, the South is alive and well where I am. May God bless you and your family abundantly, and may you never have to see this near you or your loved ones in your lifetime, and I will pray for you to get some anger management assistance.

    I can’t let this go…. Christine stated:

“You just want to get out. They left you behind to face Katrina and they don’t seem to be coming back. Just as you give up hope, you hear they are evacuating the Superdome. You make it there to find there are tens of thousands of other people who got your hot tip.”

Allow me to clarify the above.

** I could choose to leave, but didn’t. I stayed behind by choice, and have no one to blame but myself. I am relegated to being being responsible for my own choices. **

Yes, “I” statements. “THEY” is a cop-out, and a tool for victims to rationalize and justify a lack of responsibility and decision-making. Its always someone else’s fault for my woes, and someone else’s responsiblity to fix them because “they” are to blame.

A victim-centered appeal. That was a nice touch but the simple fact of that matter is if I don’t make good decisions, I will not like the consequences. “They” ordered a MANDATORY evacuation. “I” chose not to heed it. “I” now have to accept that responsibilty. “I” had two feet. “I” chose not to use them. “They” are not to blame. Nor do “they” have to pay for the consequences of my bad choices.

Cold? Perhaps. But it is a cold reality, and one that has to be faced. The bottom line is that I have to choose between making my own decisions, acting on them and living with the consequences, or forfieting that process and allowing others to make that decision for me.

Personally powerful, or powerless. I know what my preference is, and chose to align myself with others that feel the same way.

It is amazing how clearly the subscribers to political doctrine become on a blog such as this and help to reinforce my own beliefs. Thanks for the reinforcement Christine.

    Dearest Mary,

Did you attend school in Kansas or Georgia?
I hope that Darwin would see it fit to cull you
from the human race. A race where NASCAR lovin’ southerners have been lapped far too often.

The concept of 88 police officers being given the task to deal with thousands of injured, hungry, terrified people in shock is completely mind blowing to me. British press is now commenting on how the “superpower” of the world can be so at a loss as how to rescue it’s own citizens. The Daily Mail newspaper echoed the same theme in its editorial entitled “The humbling of a superpower.”

“Here is a superpower that can crush at will a tinpot dictatorship - but then becomes so bogged down in the grisly aftermath of war that it finds itself unable to respond to anything like adequately to the plight of tens of thousands of its own citizens engulfed by a natural calamity,” it said.

I am too. What the hell? I just read a news wire report that 3200 army men from Lafayette who were scheduled to come home next month WILL not be brought home to help.

It is completely horrifiying that 88 policemen from the area were all that was there to deal with all of this while thousands fight for oil in Iraq. Homeland security has nothing to do with this either because they now have 75% of the US distaster fund $$ so that they can “keep us safe”. This whole thing stinks.

Not to mention that no one in the gov’t has really spoken about that the longer they wait the more chance of a major disease outbreak. Or of all the graves that are underwater that were once beneath New Orleans that are contaminated with arsenic. What about THAT?

    Ah, but I digress.
You are all in my prayers. I’m so sorry.

Well said, if it were me, I’d have walked as far as I could if I didnt have no car or bike or money. Or ya coulda hopped on a train or “borrowed” a horse ( least you’d be savin someones horse to, right?) I think alot of these people, (not all or even the majority) but definently alot, were probably cracked out and all they cared about was when they was fixin to get more crack, when your on that stuff, world events dont matter, if you even hear about it most would just dismiss it, and those are the bastards out there lootin and rapin and just causin a ruckus, and those are the ones that need a bullet right in the head.

  92. Waylon O. Uranus (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 4:03 am

More people praying. That will fix things.
Even the morons at Al-Qaeda have figured out that isn’t enough. Do what they do….blow yourself
up, and help America become a better place.

my view is that taking food/water in a time like this is NOLA is surviving, not stealing. taking stereos, household appliances, etc., is looting and should be dealt with.

someone said it in here: all the clips show large groups of people just waiting. now i’m not there, but how about these groups trying to organize and TRY to take care of their own while waiting for additional assistance?

this is a huge natural disaster and about the only thing legit about race is that the folks who were didn’t heed the mandatory evac order, more than likely couldn’t due to their lack of resources to get out. yes, most of them happen to be black. no, i honestly don’t believe the gov’t, the red cross, etc. would be mobilizing faster in the refugees were white; i’d be the same clusterfu*k it is now — FEMA and the rest of the gov’t were completely caught with their pants down on this one.

  95. Just theFacts_Maam (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 4:16 am

WoW! Who woulda thunk it…A natural disaster could be so thought provoking.

Before I point fingers, I have a question?

When the word evacuate was spoken days before it hit, were the poor and elderly offered ‘free’ escape? Certainly there was enough time to bring in busses and evacuate some of the people that are looting and shooting, raping and dying now?

  96. Krazy Texan (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 4:27 am

well im sure officials in New Orleans as well as the great state of Louisiana sure as shoot wish they did now huh? but they would never give “free” transportation before they knew what the storm was gonna do exactly, but this is somethin to learn from, and the lesson is DONT LIVE IN A CITY THATS UNDER SEA LEVEL, regardless of how beautiful the city was and how unique it still in a sense is

  97. djk (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 4:55 am

wow, what happen to us? do you people remember 911,and how all of us were united? regardless of who is doing what, there are americans, suffering, dying and struggling to survive.i cannot beleive the crap i have read on this blog.AMERICANS! you closed minded idiots! what if it was you or your family? what then? yes,on 911 we were caught with our pants down, and if we dont unite now,and help our own people now.People are in extreme danger of starving, dying, being raped, and you sit in your little world with your little thoughts thinking about only you.i buried my mother on 911,i cannot understand your thought process.this is a good country, and you are so ignorant. you dont realize it was just fate that allowed you to live here.so stop thinking like the uneducated, unthankful, lazy idiots you are.Change your ideas and get off your comfortable ass,and show your appreciation of where you live and help your fellow americans. And help the united states pull up there pants so we can stand proud again.

  98. Just theFacts_Maam (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 4:58 am

My son suggested that they evacuate the entire area and break the rest of the levees and let NO go under water. I have to say that since another hurricane is likely to happen again in the future, why spend $25 billion to rebuild it?

Take the money and help all the refugees recover from their financial devastation!

    Just a thought…

  99. Just theFacts_Maam (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 5:02 am

    Oh, and another thing…

WHY would one of the richest NFL Quarterbacks in history, let his mother and grandmother sit out Katrina?

  100. Krazy Texan (unregistered) September 2nd, 2005 5:04 am

My Thoughts Exactly, “Just The Facts” your son is smart, I know New Orleans was great, but sadly it aint no more so just let it go.
