Outlying areas…

With the focus on Downtown I know some people in more outlying areas may not be getting good first-hand information. Please post any information you have about the outlying areas as comments. Ive been specifically asked to enquire about Chalmette, Violet, Meraux and Gentily but certainly we dont need to limit it to that. This would also be a good place to inquire about specific areas that may be getting eclipsed by the focus on downtown.

Lake Vista — Upper “bird” streets are dry, lower “bird” streets do have water, unknown how much. Local that is stuck there was going to investigate today.

This being said, said local whom stayed reported while on the phone with a friend this morning that there was a truck with a group of men with guns on the road. She hung up shortly after to hide. She said they appeared to be looters but wasn’t sure. No updates.

Chalmette & Meraux are mostly under water, varying from 8′ to 10′. Most of the houses were submerged to their rooftops. The elementary school was almost completely submerged.

I don’t know much about the other areas… digitalglobe.com has a really good close up satellite image of Orleans Parish for the otehr areas…

Does anyone know if Metairie Manor assisted living facility on York St, near Clearview and Veterans has been evacuated yet?

There are over a hundred elderly residents who have been w/o electricity or running water for four days, including my grandparents. They were told yesterday that they would be evacuated to Baton Rouge, but as of 8 AM this morning (Thursday, 9/1) no one has come.

We have now lost phone communication with them. I am looking for any information anyone may have on Metairie Manor.

Please help. I can be reached via email.

Update for St Bernard and Plaq Parish. National Guard and Coast Guard along with SBFD and SBSO in process of evacuating people from Chalmette Slip (Kaiser area) at this time. Food and water also available at this location. Help is on the way. If anyone has confirmation of a loved one that needs to be rescued please post a response. We are in Wash DC right now in Representative Melancon’s office and will get the info to the people that needs it.

Gretna, Algiers, Marrero - NOT flooded. Some homes destroyed, some roofs destroyed, but not all. It is NOT SAFE to return to the area due to looting and fighting (both day and night time as we’ve heard from Algiers). Our contact in Algiers has water and gas, but has to boil water for it to be drinkable. If you don’t have enough fuel to get in and get back out, don’t attempt to get there. From evacuating from Gretna to FL, there’s no gas in south LA, Jackson MS southward, or in south AL. And, yes, one of the housing projects was on fire. We went through Avondale, Bridge City, and Boutte and saw no flooding, lots of people walking, don’t know about water, but definitely no electricity.Saw tons of FEMA trucks, buses, and ambulances going toward Westwego/Gretna/Harvey. Will tell more as we think of it.
We have some video of our Gretna area and some pictures of Hattiesburg, MS and southwest MS. I know last night I said email me for info and I thought it would show my email and it didn’t. My email address is caraboo@rocketmail.com

Just wanted all of you affected by the Hurricane to know that our hearts go out to you. I have personally donated $200 to a ligit foundation to send in much needed food, and personal items..i know it isnt much ..its the best i can do for now.. I live just south of Washington D.C. and the whole country is just blown away by all of the devastation we are seeing. I lived in Biloxi 20 yrs ago and expericanced Hurricane Elena.. which by far was a very mild storm as compared to Katrina. My best wishes and prayers go out to you all and hopes that you will see some kind of normal life soon. Please take care, Diane

    RE: Slidell

Global National’s (Canada) Tara Nelson reported on Slidell on our evening national news at 6:30 (MST) tonight from Toronto. The reporter interviewed a couple named (I think) Anderson… apparently, they are are still rescuing people from there. Maybe you could contact the station to see who the reporter was. There are also links to many resources on this page: http://www.canada.com/national/globalnational/index.html

Just wondering where I find information on shelters and how to find out who has been rescued. My husband’s great-aunt who is no youngster was staying in an independent living complex on dimarco drive in marrero…someone gave her the keys and left her in charge…do you believe this???!! anyway, when her family came to take her to evacuate she refused believing it to be her duty to take care of things since she was put in charge…anyway, her name is Kathryn Camus and I know her sister and entire family are wondering if she is faring well…since they can’t reach her and i have the resources, i told them i would start looking tonight…any info on how to find a single person in a haystack of devastation, i’d be glad to hear it…please contact me at a_salinas@charter.net and i’ll be watching the blogs as well

    TRYING TO HELP

Our industrial contracting company has a truck that can drive thru 3 feet of waters, 500 gallon water tanks, chain saw, welding equipment, etc etc, and a can-do spirit. I have been e-mailing and calling FEMA, N.O. mayor’s office, USACE, etc to offer assistance since Monday - BUT - no response of any kind. We are ready to roll, but without some authorization or approval from officialdom, we will get stopped at a roadblock just north of the people were trying to help by some hot shot state trooper …

Will someone PLEASE tell us what is needed and e-mail or fax us some kind of paper to wave in front of deputy dog’s face so we can get in and help.

    Frustrated in St. Louis.

Have heard disturbing story that the entire population of the Audobon Zoo has been euthanized, no food-no feeders. The fish at Aquarium of Americas have all been put down. So, there is time to humanely deal with these animals, but not resources to get food to I-10 overpass?

    Also, Cindi…

    IN BRIEF/LOUISIANA
Most of Zoo’s Furry and Flippered Ride It Out
    From Times Wire Reports

Only three of the New Orleans zoo’s 1,400 animals died in the wrath of Hurricane Katrina.

The famous Audubon Zoo has the good fortune of being located on some of the city’s highest ground, but it also had an efficient disaster plan for the animals.

It suffered no serious flooding but the storm’s fierce winds toppled several large trees and knocked down branches throughout the 52-acre grounds.

The only fatalities so far were to two otters and a raccoon, zoo curator Dan Maloney said.

…In the famed New Orleans aquarium, more than 500 of the 4,000 fish died because there’s no power to pump oxygen into the tanks.

    Hope that helps.

Probably some wind damage though the roofs around the area look pretty good. The sattellite photo of the area is here:

It is excellent resolution, so you can zoom right down and see debris and such. It looks high and dry, though.
