Richard sums up, in his post, my own feelings. For some reason, my laptop won’t let me simply reply directly to all he’s saying (below). In short — it’s going to be a great time to be in New Orleans.
The cultural heart of the city remains, along with plenty of business owners, entrepreneurs and forward-thinking individuals. I noted in this morning’s paper that more folks have been allowed back into the Lower Garden District to get a few things and begin planning ther return. More electric power returns by the day as the water continues to recede faster than anticipated.
I think there will be, at least in the short term, a shortage of labor to get a lot of things cranked. A lot of people simply have no place to live anymore, nor do they have the means to get back. This is unfortunate, but is a problem that will be worked through as time goes on.
It will not be easy and it will not be quick. But we’ll do it. And those of us who return are going to be a tighter group that before.
However, I would indeed miss the Saints. Tom Benson can go to hell, far as I’m concerned. But the city would definitely miss the likes of Joe Horn and Deuce McAllister. And, just as the Cubs can be a unifying force in Chicago, the Saints do indeed provide a common joy and misery.
Whatever’s there and whatever’s not — let’s get to it.

It is not a racial epithet, contrary to those fools who demanded the firing of a D.C. adminstrative staffer who used the word to describe his budget management philosophy a few years ago. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the word “nigger” which has an entirely unrelated derivation. That didn’t save the poor budget aide, Marion Barry, between crack binges, fired the guy anyway. Personally, I don’t think they fired the guy for being racially insensitive, I think they fired him for setting a bad example by actually trying to be careful with taxpayer money.

To Howard…sounds like either you have visited New Orleans…and chose to ignore the beauty it can hold or you’ve never been there…which is even worse to describe the city in such a negative way. Every city in the United States, as least every major city, has bars, prostitutes and the like…and has visitors and residents who visit them. I’d be interested to know where you live actually. You are falling into a trap of judging an entire city based on a few bad seeds. Those bad seeds are everywhere…but they didn’t cause this disaster and there are a lot of good people who are in trouble and need help. Might help if you sit back and review your own life. If you do that and can still say these things…well I for one am amazed. Don’t throw stones…not now…not ever. Do something that will make you feel good and help out. Anyway, Howard, rethink quickly your position: the fact is that New Orleans is a MAJOR U.S. PORT, receiving around 20% of the U.S.’s imported goods - okay, there are some unsavory characters down there, but look around your own city.
Also, if we can’t go down there and “SIN” there where would we go?
Here in Nashville, TN, we have had around 25,000 New Orleans evacuees and I have yet to meet one that is not an upstanding, sincere person. And I have met lots as a Red Cross volunteer. I still am on the lookout for those unsavory characters, but just haven’t seen them yet.

Why don’t we just ignore them? And since when does private interests run our economy? Major business functions, from computers to aviation and pharmaceuticals, was created using taxpayers dollars. It was given to private industry afterwards, just like the Internet that we’re using right now. Expecting private interests to rebuild New Orleans? Tell it to the victims of 9/11, when the airline industry almost went bankrupt. Would private interests get them out of that slump? Well, it sort of turned out that some airline companies pooled their financial resources together, or so I’ve heard, but if that’s true, isn’t that a form of socialism?
I want New Orleans rebuilt. I want it rebuilt better, more colorful and more picturesque, and hopefully with a mechanism in place to help reduce poverty.

Well let me just say that Katrina was an act of God. I knew before the donation requests came in from everywhere that the people of New Orleans were going to play the Victim card. Not the victim card of an act of GOD but the victim card that says this happened because I was black purple green and or brown. Most of the people who lived in New Orleans were on federal assistance “WELFARE” long before Katrina and will continue to be on “WELFARE” long after. They are lazy people who want everything handed to them. As far as donations go…its nice that the American people want to help the ones who truly need help but I will be damned if I am going to donate money or anything else to anyone who raped, looted, killed or just plained ignored their fellow man in New Orleans in order just to help or benefit themselves. I have read that the Red Cross has issued debit card to the tune of 2000.00 each and already so called survivors are out buying 800.00 purses and such when they should be buying food water and clothing. This always happens in a trajedy and I as a taxpayer and a donator am tired of seeing my hard earned money go for taxes to support people who only want to keep having children when they can’t afford them and people who just want to sit around watching tv and just hang out with friends
because they get a free handout. I am tired of paying for all the others who don’t want to work. I also do not like the fact that in the United States the citizens have to donate money to always help those in need. If the government would quit wasting money on space flights and stupid wars, and would quit sending millions if not billions to foreign countries no one in the United States would have to donate a dime. There seems to be a common view among some of the people writing here about the people of New Orleans being lazy, no goods. Nothing that has been said to try and point out that you can’t generalize in that way seems to have changed their mind or even made them think. I’m beginning to wonder if they aren’t using that way of thinking as a reason to justify their lack of helping in a crisis??? Surely, you can’t honestly sit there and believe that an entire city was full of nothing but lazy people that did nothing all day but collect welfare?? It took me only a few minutes on the internet to locate reports on welfare collections. Sure there are people on welfare..but NO is by far not the highest state. Well since this is all over the place, I guess I’ve got a comment from left field too: think of it this way, a possibility….maybe all the “niggers” (God I hate that word. Check out your own ancestry, you might be pretty surprised what your genealogical records come out with — like there’s no such thing as pure white or pure this or that. The fact is, there is a hierarchy of intelligence among the races, and it is indeed genetic. Anyone who tells you that genetics do not influence intelligence and therefore behavior is either stupid, misinformed, or lying. Now, I am not going to sit here and tell you that there AREN’T a lot of stupid white trash around, because there are. Nor am I going to tell you that I haven’t met several Blacks who were indeed intelligent and civilized, because I have.
But, generally speaking, we may draw conclusions about various groups of people by their behavior, and the behavior exhibited by the lovely people of New Orleans, such as the multiple gang rapes and murders of children, has been documented for all the world to see.

In stating all your “facts” you fail to address the issue of serial killers. Not to mention our own little Jeffrey Dahmer or the hundreds of other sick people who have raped and murdered children. The men in New Orleans who raped those children are animals. I don’t care what color they are. I agree 100% with you on that fact. The people who looted…I don’t know. Should they have done that for other than food and water. No they shouldn’t. But whites were doing it also…just not being shown on the news as often as blacks…not to mention…there were a lot more blacks there than whites.

Yes, it is indeed fun to enjoy the thought of people such as yourself squirming in distaste at the knowledge that there are articulate and very well read Social Darwinists such as myself out there. Talk to a taxpaying citizen of any of the urban centers of Texas in six months, and ask them how they feel about the contributions to the community that their new neighbors have made.

I want to share something with you and the others on here who seem to hate blacks so much. I have a friend…highly educated…very classy…and black. We were talking today at lunch about this blog and how angry I was at some of the entries. Squirming in distaste? Far from it…squirming makes it sound like I’m afraid to say anything about the way I feel. I do not need to squirm.
I asked her how she handles such hatred of her race…and didn’t she want to sign on and defend her race. She answered…very calmly…No. I couldn’t believe it…why I asked. Why don’t you want to tell them its just not true. She told me…”Because people like that believe what they choose to believe. They will not change simply by being told they are wrong. In their eyes…they are right. Why would I want to be drawn into their hatred?”
I realized something R.P.O.G. I realized by allowing myself to be drawn into your hatred…I in a very small way help you to validate your beliefs. Sure there will still be people that will listen to you rattle on and on. Unfortunately…some of them will believe you…because on the surface…you sound intelligent.

I hate to disturb the comfort of preconceived notions with facts, but it appears that the tales of rape and murder in the Superdome, of people shooting at rescue personnel, and the other horror stories coming out of NO in the beginning of the emergency, were little better than instant urban legends. Most people in that hell-hole of a stadium behaved themselves, cooperated with the few police on the scene, and did the best they could under the most appalling conditions to keep themselves and others alive.
The only savagery I can discern comes from dunces and racists like the two abovementioned embarassments to humankind. Not to mention
