Here in Dallas, we’re seeing Houston/Galveston folks now streaming in. Best course of action, seems to me, is for those of us who had to get out of New Orleans to now find a way to help the new arrivals. We’ve got some recent experience and, frankly, plenty of time to kill anyway.
Besides — we share an affinity for rice, I-10, skanky water and iffy football teams (SMU/Rice, Saints/Texans).

I had to leave my home town for good myself. Considering wellbeing of your family, business and yourself it is a sensible alternative. Make it a strategic pull-out to save your people. Maybe one day they will consider you as a hero.
This is what unity is about. And that’s like what these disasters tend to bring out. They tend to bring out a semblance of togetherness, of unity, that is so lacking otherwise in much of our contemporary society. It’s strange, though, how the callous nature of contemporary society changes during a crisis. One would think that one of the things to be learned from this disaster, as epic as it was, is that we need to embrace unity on a near constant basis. It was the callous nature of our own government that led NO down to begin with, by not providing the funds to further structure the aging levee system. After all, NO is part of the entire country. And, the last I heard, our nation is called “United States.” Where were the voices in your favor when you called on the Feds for the funds to protect your city? Apparently, they were silent, with many probably worried more about the cash in their pockets. God forbid if they dare to raise a tax to protect a city if they don’t live there!
