Expats unite!
We went out to the old Granada Theater last night with some friends to see Marcia Ball and, I gotta say, it was cathartic. I’d urge any temporary New Orleans expatriot to take advantage of seeing regular Louisiana performers when they come to your area. While it’s always sad at first, the second line is always there and it’s sweeter than ever. Those of us who live in South Louisiana can sometimes forget how unique the music is because we’re surrounded by it. But once you get stuck in the Land Of Musical Schlock, you start remembering real fast.

Now, that’s interesting…I’ve always considered Marcia a Texas Music lady, but with a heavy dose of Louisiana. Whichever, she’s top shelf.
Greetings from a fellow New Orleans refugee staying in Dallas — not too far from the Granada, but I went to see a local band at the Allgood Cafe the night Miss Marcia was here. (It’s a really nice place, the 100 Inevitables were super and if you want some migas for breakfast, Allgood is not a misnomer.)
Good luck on everything with your family!

She’s the true TX/LA combo. Born in Orange TX, because there was no hospital where her family lived in Vinton LA. She lives in Austin, but her biggest influence was Professor Longhair. Etc.
I wrote an feature for the AP about her, Tab Benoit and Tish Hinojosa about 10 years ago and simply titled it “I-10 Music.” I’ll post it if I can find it.
It would be great if you guys could circulate the news about this event in Austin, Texas:
