The Paper Chase Part Deux
It seems the rash of paperwork we filled out early in our exodus has created more problems than solutions….
Kim and I both filled out stuff within a week after the hurricane. So far…..
FEMA has told us there are multiple filings with them for the same household. This has resulted in an “investigation” and no help with our road expenses. My calls to them to work this out have resulted so far only in promises an investigator will call back “within 48 hours.” That was last week and no call so far.
I applied to the SBA three weeks ago for business help. So far, this appears to have vanished into the same black hole.
I have received no response to my unemployment filing with the state of LA. Kim has a letter saying to look for a debit card to cover her unemployment, but that has not yet arrived.
Don’t mistake this for whining or bitching about entitlement. I outline this simply as information so those of you who haven’t yet received answers can know you’re not the only ones. Family circumstances (caring for an ill relative) prevent us from returning to rebuild or simply going out and getting a temporary job (which we would have done three weeks ago).
The positives are that we’re safe and the value of our house has likely doubled, since it remained dry and virtually undamaged. We also have friends who are returning to the neighborhood and will be staying at the house to give it that lived-in look until we can return. I have big orders waiting once I can get the business going again and, at least for the most part, my creditors remain understanding.
This will all fall into place. It’s the waiting that’s difficult.

I think part of the problem is now the media has stopped covering the story and now people are not getting the help they need. where is the local people to help you? they need to step up also and lend a hand in the cause. thats the media for ya cover a story report false information and leave. i think i saw cooper report he would stay there reprting this until evryone is helped…hmmm not seen him reporting on it.o well good luck.
And you think Katrina was bad? wait until you attempt to run through the bureaucratic redtape BS of a federal agency - no matter who’s in charge! Good luck to you!
It is indeed good to see others who are stuck in FEMA-red-tape hell. My roommate and I are in a similar condition. While I’ve at least received the initial $2k, she’s seen nothing. Difficult to swallow when you have a host of friends with $4300 in their pocket.
It’s not about entitlement, it’s the the frustration that results from entrapment in bureaucratic limbo. The relief is out there, you’ve seen it in action, but can’t quite get a piece for yourself.
Good luck to you, and all the NOLA metbloggers!
Hey,
Just scrolling around the net to find someone who could use some pet donation stuff. We had a bunch of people drop stuff off but the place we were going to send to said they were full. I really want to get this stuff to people who have pets who evacuated and are somewhere and are getting some stuff for themselves but need some stuff for their pets. We have a bed and bowls and collars and leashes and toys and treats etc.
Help me find someone/s to send this to and I will ship it out. Just need a mailing address and name. I am even willing to send it to General Delivery to the Post Office (in case the displaced no longer has an address).
