Charity & University Hospitals Condemned

Times Picayune Article.

Ouch. There goes another 2,000-3,000 jobs from our economy, at least until they can build a new hospital. And these were skilled, decent paying jobs. The other tragedy is that Charity was such a cool building, dirty, for sure, but a really neat art deco structure with gotham-city like qualities. Almost the only building of that style in New Orleans. They’ve been talking about outphasing it for a long time now, but I wish it could have been done gracefully. Ah well, they should have known not to put a basement in the damned place when they built it.

My fiance is a medical student at Tulane and I have a lot of friends currently at LSU Med and it ain’t pretty for New Orleans. Tulane is in Houston, and thus so am I, for an indefinite period, but no more than a year even the worst pessimist thinks. LSU Med is both in Baton Rouge, at Pennington Biomedical, and also in Shreveport, at the other LSU Med school and they may be gone a lot longer than Tulane since Charity and University were their hospitals. Tulane can be rehabilitated much easier, so it’s not totally down and out for New Orleans in terms of medical care (and Ochsner is still there, of course).
