Give Me Popeye’s Or Give Me Death

Pre-Katrina Basic Human Rights in New Orleans:
Thou shalt be allowed to purchase and consume alcohol anywhere, at any time, and thou shalt never be more than 1,000 yards from a Popeye’s location at any time.

This is a map showing open Popeye’s locations in the metro area, courtesy of popeyes.com. Take note of the severe lack of Popeye’s in and around Orleans Parish.

This is a catastrophe.

My yellow pages captivates me with near-poetic listings of 32 Popeye’s locations in Orleans and Jefferson Parishes alone, not to mention the venerable “Super Popeye’s” on Veteran’s Hwy. And that 32 doesn’t include the Westbank. There’s probably another 20 on the Westbank. Now we have five. Five. None in Orleans.

This is a travesty.

New Orleans gave the world Popeye’s. We nurtured it like a loving mother and then set it free, where it warmed the hearts and bellies of this great nation. And this is how we’re thanked? Come on! Copeland? Popeye’s corporation? Are you reading this? To quote our mayor, GET OFF YOUR ASSES AND DO SOMETHING!!! Here is a list of unflooded Popeye’s locations that could, in theory, be making me some biscuits right now:
Popeye’s #2028, 1414 S. Carrollton Ave
Popeye’s #2027, 4041 Magazine St.
Popeye’s #2020, 1243 St. Charles Ave
Popeye’s #2030, 621 Canal St.
Popeye’s @ Riverwalk Mall

The S. Claiborne and St. Claude locations may or may not have been flooded. S. Claiborne was up pretty high on a hill, it looks okay to me. My final meal before evacuating New Orleans was purchased at Popeye’s #2239 at S. Carrollton & Earhart, at around 9pm on Saturday, August 27th. Had I saved that chicken, it would now command a very high price at auction, being among the final Popeye’s chicken to be fried in Orleans Parish.

I would now like a moment of silence for Popeye’s #2239. God bless.

Post-Katrina Basic Human Rights in New Orleans:
Thou shalt be allowed to throw garbage anywhere, including from the window of a moving vehicle. Thou shalt park wherever one would like, and drive in any direction on one way streets. Stop signs and traffic lights are to be merely taken as a suggestion. Popeye’s chicken shall be hard to obtain. Be home by 2:00.

I feel your pain - we lived in Raleigh, N.C. for a few years and there was NO Popeye’s ANYWHERE! Closest was in Augusta, GA. And yes, we drove there (OK - not to get the chicken exclusively, but it was on the agenda).

I LOVE THIS POST!!! I now live in Phoenix. I lived in Kenner up until 2 years ago. In those days, I had two Popeyes within about one mile. Now I have to travel about five miles to reach the closest of the two, and on is IN A GAS STATION — oh, the humanity!!!

I have spent virtually a lifetime eating red beans and rice in all places and all cities. And Popeye’s still ranks in the top three, no matter where I go. It rocks.

    Great post!

I love my Popeye’s (we do have a few in Columbus) and will always be greatful to Copeland.

    Love my Popeye’s

I know what you mean about Popeye’s. My old roomie is back in NOLA and that’s his biggest complaint too. But they are corporate, after all. They’ll re-open when the spread sheet says so. ;-)

What about Super Popeye’s on Veterans? I mean a Popeye’s with a full bar that sells ribs - that place is a New Orleans landmark! Please tell me it will survive or will live again….

We have a few Popeye’s here in Tampa, but to be honest, it doesn’t taste the same as it does when you’re on St. Charles at 8am waiting for Zulu!

The Popeye’s on lower St. Charles (near St. Charles Tavern) appears about ready to open, given the lights behind the menu and some other organized stuff we saw inside tonight.

We stopped at one today in Gramercy on the way to the Saints game. Terribly understaffed for noon on a Sunday, afta choich. But we were happy to wait that extra time to have everything done right — and it was.

Chris: Here in Panama we have very few Popeye’s, so yesterday at the mall, I saw one and decided to have some chicken and bisquits in your honor, thought about your wonderful city with every delicious bite. I’m sure they will be up and running there soon. God bless you all!

    Two things:

1- Not all Popeye’s are alike. If it is not located in the New Orleans area it’s not a “real” popeyes. Chciken is not as spicy around the country, trust me.

2- Does anyone know if the Popeyes on St Bernard near Broad survived? It was my home for popeyes, hope my girls in there got out okay….damn Im miss home

The one on St. Bernard near Broad survived, but is not yet open.

Finding a Popeye’s in Houston is like find a needle in a haystack. By-the-way, there’s plenty of haystacks here. Boy-O-Boy, I know what it means to miss New Orleans :-(

I love Popeye’s, best fast food chicken available. Unfortunately we only have two in my area (that I know of) and they are a good 20 to 30 minute ride from my house so i don’t get to partake in the Popeye’s too often. The have the best bisquits too. man I wish I had some Popeye’s right now.

I evacuated to GA and there’s only ONE Popeye’s, and it’s like 30 mins away. I think I’d rather brave the flood waters than live that far from a Popeye’s ;)

Popeye’s on lower St. Charles (by Wendy’s, La Madeleine and Office Depot, near the St. Charles Tavern) is now OPEN!!!!!!!!!
