It’s Carnival Time

Someone brought a slice of king cake to my desk this morning and I couldn’t have been happier. Tonight is twelfth night, marking the official start of carnival season. The Phunny Phorty Phellows will have their annual streetcar ride tonight on a new route, from Canal & Crozat St. and then down the riverfront line. I might actually check it out this year. Carnival is always cathartic, but this year I imagine it’s going to be unparalleled. I can’t wait.

Speaking of King cake - is there a good baker up and running that can do a web or mail order? The ones we get up here in Memphis are “St. Louis” style - meaning they are filled with yucky jelly and other nastiness with NO BABY! *geesh* I know Central Grocery Fed-Exed at one point, but that was pre-K, so. . . anyway - if anyone knows, please pass on teh info!

    Thanks!

p.s. hung out my Mardi Gras flag today! My daughter squealed with delight. In her mind, Mardi Gras=crawfish! ;-P

I believe Gambino’s is up and running. I also think Haydels is, but I am not positive.

I know Central Grocery is operating as per normal once again. You might also check with Langenstein’s or Dorignac’s.

haydel’s Bakery on Jefferson Hwy. is up and running. King Cakes are flyin’ out da doors, and delicious, as always, they are.

They do a robust and reliable mail order business. I live just up the street from them. Nice folks, good pastries and super king cakes. Go start ya mardi pardi season right, dawlin.

I suggest Haydel’s. We have already had 2 cakes from there and they were great. Haydel’s didn’t flood since they are on Jefferson Highway.
