While many of us feel as if nothing at all is happening in New Orleans right now, over at S. Saratoga at Delachaise St., Habitat for Humanity and the NBA have begun construction on a new home to be occupied by the Winston family, who is temporarily staying in Baton Rouge. Erin Bastion (standing) is supervisor on this site and explained that Hoops for Homes, sponsored by the NBA donated $1,000,000 to acquire this empty lot and construct this new home. They plan on doing 20 homes in all. Here’s the link to Habitat site:

If you feel the need to be part of progress, Habitat has done some very good project homes over the years in New Orleans and right now they are looking for volunteers for Operation Home Delivery, this in the information from their e-list:

They have the following opportunities for 20 volunteers per set of dates to build in Thibodaux, Louisiana, arriving on Sundays and departing on Sundays:

Volunteers will be staying in a missionary house. The house will provide: 1.5 baths, kitchen facility, bunk beds (some people may have to sleep on the floor). This will be shared accommodations. Volunteers should bring: bedding, towel, comfortable work clothes, closed toe shoes, hammer, gloves nail belt and tape measure. Volunteers will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the worksite. The affiliate is also arranging a Wednesday afternoon bus tour (at cost to volunteer).

The volunteers will be construction several houses to be used as future volunteer accommodations for the duration of Operation Home Delivery.

To qualify for one of the 20 available spots:

5) You must be able to provide your own meals other than lunch on the build site (provided by affiliate)
6) Suggested donation of $100 to compensate the affiliate for their costs.

If you meet these criteria, please fill out the application and waiver of liability (Microsoft Word 2000 or newer recommended) and e-mail them to the Operation Home Delivery Team at OHDResponse@habitat.org. If selected, you will also need to bring copies of these to the build.

Volunteers will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis. Due to the large volunteer interest with the rebuilding effort, not everyone will be able to participate in this build. Additional builds are beginning to be scheduled and we will continue to notify you of new developments. Each volunteer opportunity is unique and will vary depending on the capacity of the affiliate and host city.

Together we will make a difference.

In partnership,
Operation Home Delivery Team
Habitat for Humanity International
