Seven Hundred Fifty Million dollars for WHAT????

Much has been made about the federal government and President Bush’s financial commitment to the New Orleans area. We’ve heard the “Recovery Czar” Donald Powell drone on and on about how “the money we gave you already is enough”. We’ve heard the “spend this amount right and there may be more down the line” more times than I can count on my body digits. Even I have written that we cannot expect the Feds to just throw cash our way with our past history.

But then along comes this one: 750 million for marriages.

If your too lazy to click the link and read, here goes: Congress has approved a 5 yr plan aimed at “building healthier marriages” to the financial tune of Seven Hundred Fifty Million dollars.

The 750 MILLION will fund programs to build communication in marriages, relationship skill training and fatherhood programs.

What the hell is going on here? For the Federal government to spend my, your and everyone else’s tax dollars on these lame, ridiculous, make more government and make it bigger type program is just one of the many things that upset those of us on the ground in New Orleans. You don’t want to hear us “whine”? Maybe if the Federal government didn’t just basically spit on the area while they spend 750 MILLION to strengthen marriages (and please don’t be stupid and say “Oh your anti-marriage”) we wouldn’t be seen as “whiners”.

So the next time your “tired of ya’ll whining” or you have “Katrina fatigue”, think of how much of your taxpayer dollars you want spent on Federal Marriage Counseling. I know of about 200 crater type potholes around town that 750 million might be able to fill.

We could point to countless Federal programs like this. The shame is that it’s such an everyday thing for the government (at all levels) to piss away our money on things like this.

But it’s a rare thing when there’s even a hint at politicians doing things any differently. The debate the Senate had about the pork-filled transportation bill in the wake of Katrina was almost unheard of.

I’d say it’s sad that it takes something like Katrina and the Corps failures in New Orleans to get America to realize maybe we shouldn’t piss away dollars all over the place so we could better handle disasters - but that’s not happening.

The best-case scenario is that the Feds take responsibility for the Corps works and provide property relief down there, but that would just be debt upon debt. No chance ridiculous programs like this get done away with.

The president has no business wasting tax payers’ dollars

to define and legistate marriage coming from an evangelical background

    with predefined codexes.
