It’s All About the Pageantry

Here’s a picture of the throws I got last night and my friend, Robin. Yeah, like, Batman and Robin. Robin got his groove on and was workin’ his way into the parading dancers. And for those of you stateside who are assuming that we’re all wasted down here. No, he’s not a big drunk, nut. This, dear reader, is a family man. Robin’s an academic. Robin and his family lost everything in Lakeview. I have total respect for Robin, he is a superhero.
This is how we do it.

Muses was the last parade Thursday night and it was great! I just kept saying, “I’m so happy!”. The floats were magical. The themes handled the Katrina issues with just the right balance of respect and humor. The 9th Ward band was amazing ! and I saw my friend Elizabeth from the restaurant marching. The high school marching bands are my favorite, I couldn’t wait to hear them this year, my soul craves it. And Muses had flambeaux ! I thought there weren’t going to be any this year because they were trying to move parades along faster and they don’t have enough people willing to do it this year. It’s hard work but it’s so beautiful to see the flames coming up the avenue. Most of the flambeaux were Latinos this year…..thanks so much guys. I hope everyone is handing them dollars this year.

I caught some great loot because we had a sign for Ann Heslin who I know from the PRC. Ann and her friend, Heather rode on float 21. Thank you Ann and Heather ! You looked beautiful. Thank you for the blinky necklace and the Muses Got Game, game necklace and a baseball and a manicure kit. The bracelet I got from Ann at work, it’s sweet. Someone gave me a mini-moonpie, so all is right with the world.

My neighbors were fun last night. Mr. G showed up in his costume and J. had a keg of Shiner and Miss K. had an open house with great tunes. I am lucky to live here. We might feel unlucky this year but we’re lucky mfers, man. This is a great city.

Despite our problems. Which brings me to this. Two years ago Latosha Bell was killed at Muses and I thought about her too. I hope you think about her too. Her little boy is three. Story

This morning I am sitting at my computer feeling pity for my neighbors who are heading to their cars and on to work. I am on vacation. I am working on my costume and preparing for a neighborhood event I’ve got in the corridor tomorrow which entails buying a king cake. I might go over and work on the inventory of the neighborhood but I should not. I should just shut down for a day. But that could be tomorrow too…..

just an ordinary boy wonder, thanks. and while the family man/academic/lakeview status is much appreciated, the real love i was showing was for the bearded oysters in the background. them and the footers and the steppers.

That shooting was actually two years ago. I was about two blocks away at the time, and like most other people I heard the shots and naively thought they were fireworks or something.
