Shane Landry Candidate for City Council District B

Shane%20Landry.jpg

Shane Landry is 33yrs old, a Cajun and an attorney and he’s running against Renee Gill Pratt and genuinely respects his fellow candidate, Quentin B. Shane is married and has one child. He has a sophisticated grasp of how government works and especially our unique opportunity here in New Orleans, right now. “We cannot look at our politics in New Orleans as a spectator sport, it’s our fault if this city fails right now.” Shane wants to see an end to the system of corporate welfare, secrecy and cultural peonage and would work hard to build an economy built on universal prosperity. “The people on the city council right now are not leaders.” He said he can’t sit by and watch our city government squander another opportunity. He’ll work to get more money from our oil production, “. . . it’s colonialism, we support the rest of the country with our resources and get nothing in return.” You can read more about Shane’s platform on his website: http://www.shanelandry.com/home.asp

I began our conversation by asking what his reaction to the rash of murders over the weekend. Is it, ‘ here we go again?’ (Some cops sitting at a nearby table in the coffee shop started looking at us rather nervously because we were obviously fed up.) We talked about the problems with Mr. Jordan in the D.A.’s office and what a mess that is and how the whole network of prosecution fails in our city. Shane knows that we need to attack our social problems from more than one angle and we need to leverage one success against others ( many people like to just throw out education as the solution). Shane knows we need help from the federal government to get the situation under control. Shane defines our problems as a low-level insurgency, the city government can’t get a grip on it or can and refuses to. He said we have tolerated a sub-culture of crime in the city and it’s all of our faults. Dismissing murders in the housing projects or black-on-black violence is unacceptable.

So many candidates wow you with their bravado, some with their brains and well, others not at all. It’s obvious as soon as you begin talking to Shane Landry that he has thought for a long time about the problems in our city and he can discuss them on many levels. And then he can do it in French. Shane says he is the only geo-politicist running and that part of our problem is that the rest of the U.S. and members of Congress do not understand the French cultural paradigm. Shane talks about how this makes it difficult for New Orleans and Louisiana to inspire confidence for funding from people who identify with the culture of traditional Puritan Americanism. Shane questions the demand for a “plan” from Congress. He believes it’s simply a rhetorical device to deny giving us the money we need for infrastructure. “How do you expect people to coalesce so quickly around a common plan while we are recovering and our people are displaced?” We certainly aren’t hearing any rallying cry from the members of city council right now.

If Shane Landry wins, what will he do to further New Orlean’s goal of becoming a chocolate city? Might I suggest he add to this menu other items than a fattening sweet: Lemonade City (Oriental), Beer City (Irish), Meatball City (Italian), and Taco City (Mexican).

With this buffet to choose from, N.O. will either appeal to your appetite or have you puking a loving barrage of ethnic and racial flavors.

Vote for Shane! Vote for Shane! Vote for Shane!!!

Laureen, are you planning to profile all the candidates for District B? You could give the League of Women Voters a run for their money!

    Anyone but Gill-Pratt.

Seems like an interesting prospect. But one note….City Council has no jurisdiction over Louisiana’s oil tax revenue. It concerns me if he doesn’t know what the responsibility of the office is and what issues he will have to immediately address if elected…the first and foremost being Housing and imminent domain, particularly in Broadmoor, which is in his district.

His platform on his webpage reflects a state slant much more than City Council. A City Council member isn’t going to be making decisions on oil revenue and port matters. Maybe he should run for the LA. Legislature, if these are his primary concerns, or re-address the issues which the Council B position which actually govern.

I’m in B and looking for a good candidate….maybe Shane’s it, but I want to see how he’s going to address the issues at hand, not state matters. Good luck.

Sorry for the shameless use of your blog to promote myself, but I figured this was a political posting and might sort of fit in here.

I am running for Civil Sheriff and seek to consolidate the sheriffs’ offices in Orleans Parish. Please check out my website and tell your friends about me if you will be voting for me.

Also, feel free to email me with any questions!

I read your article on Shane Landry. However, I think the better candidate for the City Council District B seat is Stacy Head. I have heard her speak at a number of things. She is intelligent and well spoken, which is more than I can say about the incumbent. Additionally, she has a pretty detailed plan on what she wants to do to revitalize District B, from revamping the City’s Adjudicated Housing program to turning areas of Central City into commercial corridors. It is more detailed on her website - stacyhead.com

I would like to see an interview with her on your website.

Excellent piece about Shane Landry. My neighborhood is involved in a huge development battle on Valence Street. Stephanie Bruno wrote about it in PIP. Anyway, after I met Shane, I sent him some info and he came to the CPC hearing to oppose the project. Michael Duplantier did as well.

In contrast, Stacy Head blew me off unless I was willing to set up a meeting for her. I was not so I never heard back from her. There are beaucoup rumors that she’s sold out to the developers and my experience with her supports those rumors. If she makes the run-off, I’ll stil vote for her but I’ll bring a clothespin to the polls.

I have a question: is it okay if I post your picture of Shane on my blog? I don’t wanna bug him about something like that.

This is to reply to the unfair and untrue statements that Peter Athos posted. First, actions like Peter’s — maligning a candidate’s character — are what keep good and honest people out of politics. I am running because I love this city and I have invested my heart and finances in it. I have “sold out” to no one. Rumors aboud about city council candidates — in fact, someone posted that I have a “deal” with Canizaro — I have never met the man! So, please, if you love this city, don’t discourage people who want to help make it better.

Peter e-mailed me about the Valence condo project and below is my reply. Notably, despite my offer to meet with him to discuss the issues, he never responded. I did, as I said I would, contact the CPC and my contact agreed that it would be improper for a council candidate — who very well may be the arbiter of the dispute when on the council — to form a hard and fast opinion now.

    Peter,

As soon as I learned about the proposed condo project I began gathering information. So far, I have spoken to Ken Swartz, the property owner who appears to be the most effected, and several other people who live in the surrounding blocks. I am also contacting the CPC to find out what waivers or variances the developer seeks. I believe it would be imprudent for me to take a position on the project before learning more about it.

Frankly, I think this is an example of why we need: 1) a master plan for the city; and 2) an engaged and responsive council member. As a neighbor of the area of the proposed project (I live on Soniat on the other side of St. Charles), I have watched the church deteriorate for many years, and have hoped that someone would take an interest in it. So, development of the property is a positive thing — but it must be appropriate for the neighborhood. A good council member should bring all interested parties to the table to make this a win win situation. My instinct is that the developer is requesting more height and density than he needs to make this profitable — much like other negotiations, he is asking for the moon in hopes of getting something less. So, the project could potentially go forward in a way that would be only positive — less density, different facade (I agree that it’s ugly), more use of the church, lower height.

Again, as merely a council candidate, I do not have the resources to encourage a dialogue between the developer and the neighborhood. Nevertheless, in hopes that after April 22 I will be the council member with the ability to move this problem to a good solution, I am working to be well-informed. To that end, I would appreciate any additional information you have. Further, I would love the opportunity to talk to you and other interested neighbors about this and other issues of concern. If you have some time over the next 2 weeks, let me know.

I find your remarks about Stacy Head difficult to believe. I have heard her speak a couple of times and she has never promoted “big developers.” In fact, she is much more interested in renovating the blighted houses in the City, which she personally has done in her own neighborhood. It is also one of her main campaign issues. Additionally, after your comment, I went online to review her campaign contributors, and your “rumors” about selling out to developers are just that - rumors. The majority of her contributors are individuals. Not to mention the fact that she is the only candidate who has filed a campaign contribution report. None of the other candidates have bothered to disclose from whom they have recieved money. By the way, this is a violation of campaign finance laws. The other candidates, other than Pratt, aren’t even in office yet and they are already avoiding the law.

Also, based on Stacy Head’s response to your comments, it seems that you were not up front. Your comments were irresponsible, baseless and inappropriate.

    Peter,

Your comments about Stacy Head are ridiculous. I have known Stacy for the past 10 years and she would be the last person to sell out to anybody. It’s also interesting that you should mention the Valance Street project. At an event last Sunday, Stacy was asked to address this very issue and she gave the same response that she gave you in her return email.
Anyone reading your comments and Stacy’s response would see that you are disingenuous. In fact, if you are so certain that she has sold out to big developers, step up to the plate and identify them and the source of your information. It is irresponsible acts such as yours that stop qualified and honest candidates from seeking public office.
Although I am working for Stacy’s campaign, I would never spread false information about another candidate. You owe Stacy Head an apology.

I think you are wrong about Stacy Head. I met her at a function at Bridge Lounge and she was all about restoring blighted houses for first time home buyers and not tearing them down for big developments. Besides, based on what she said in her email to you, it seems she was willing to discuss the issue with you and even went a step further and talked to the CPC. Man, you need to get your story straight before posting it.

Okay, folks; message received. I spoke out of turn. Here’s an email I just sent to Stacy Head.

    Dear Ms. Head:

I owe you an apology for posting those comments on Metroblogging. I’m very frustrated with what’s happening on Valence Street and essentially posted without thinking things through. I should know better than to hit the send button so rashly when I was having a bad day.

It’s not the first mistake I’ve made and it won’t be the last but it was a stupid one. I don’t usually peddle rumors and I shouldn’t have given into frustration. Again, I’m sorry.

    -Peter Athas

    Peter,

Thanks for geing a stand-up guy. I have those days as well. I think one thing we can definitely agree on is that we need change in District B.

  13. Peter (unregistered) April 1st, 2006 11:25 am

    Lori Anne:

Thanks. I had a very gracious private reply from Stacy as well. It’s the frustration from 4 years of NOT having a councilperson who will even listen to people in the neighborhoods. Change is an absolute must and I’ve learned that Stacy is a class act.
