I Went For A Saturday Drive And Look Where It Got Me

Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. What started as a photo shoot in New Orleans East and Slidell landed me by Mississippi Sound. The destruction is unbelievable and just as horrifying-saddening. As a geologist observing this, though, I felt no anger because ALL of that was caused by a hurricane, an unstoppable force of nature. There is none of the sense of betrayal experienced when back here.

Homes, businesses, lives, communities - all gone. Even their possession of a governor who has the White House’s ear doesn’t make me feel any better about what I saw. Destruction, whether by wind, water or human laziness, is just plain sad.

I made a very similiar trip on the Monday morning before Mardi Gras this year. Myself and two of my friends, after a night of complete drunkeness found ourselves hopping in a car and driving toward MS, with no real destination in mind. As we aproached the exit for Waveland I decided to go explore. I was completely taken aback but the utter devestation that Nature had unleashed on the area. It was just as bad as what you see in the Lower 9th Ward, but so much different. It was the result of the pure ferociousness of wind and water beating upon a coastline. Something everybody should tale the time to go see for themselves.
I went in November 2005 and was floored. I recommend everyone do a go see, it put my life in perspective.
