Google Maps Update

A while ago, Richard posted about the New Orleans imagery on Google Maps being outdated, i.e. no broken levees, no boats in streets, no blue tarps on roofs. Clearly, pre-Katrina imagery was being used. Well, it still is, with the notable exception of most of the 9th Ward and Chalmette now having newer imagery, which appears to have been taken shortly after floodwaters were drained from these areas. Actually, parts of the Lower 9 still have water in them. But there are almost no tarps on roofs, so these must have been taken before people were able to start putting up tarps.

It’s pretty interesting. Here are some highlights.

Boats at marina by Lakefront Airport piled in parking lot
Site of levee break in Lower 9th Ward, complete with barge on street
Water still in the streets of Lower 9th Ward
Oh, dear: shipping containers (?) scattered about like matchsticks, trains sitting on flooded tracks, New Orleans East
Great contrast between new and old imagery. In new imagery, grass is brown, swimming pools black, roofs less shingely
There’s all those school buses that got flooded, also, note the number of cars on I-10 in the pre and post-k imagery

Feel free to put additional things of interest in the comments section.
