The City of NO
Ironically, the name of the New Orleans City Website. I believe it’s a pun. See, somehow, the Mayor’s Office of Technology (techtards) have designed a site that accurately duplicates the frustration and fury of going to a government office in Orleans Parish and talking to someone who has no idea who they are, what their job is, and is indignantly hostile toward you for showing up expecting service; all with out leaving your home. It’s like a big, Virtual fuck you. Part of the beauty of the site is it’s slowness. I once accused the department of transportation of single-handedly bringing valium to popularity in the work place. Being at any local government office forces the question ‘who drives these people to work?’ into your mind against your will. The website has compensated for that by making it so you can only use Microsoft Internet Explorer - so those of you that clicked that link and are still waiting for it to load: it won’t. Actually it will load every 32nd attempt made using a non IE browser - just to keep things irrational - but after loading, none of the links work so it’s really just a picture at that point.
Which is really what the local government is right now. It’s really like a gun carved out of a potato, it might look like a gun, kinda, but it isn’t going to do a damn thing except turn all rotten and smelly if left alone for long enough. Although, if you want to pay a parking ticket or any one of the many taxes, you can do that online. It will be somewhat frustrating, but it’ll get done. And you know how this whole little rant started? I just wanted to fill out my homestead exemption form online. That’s all. I’ve been told you can do it online. I wrongly assumed it can be done online. Maybe it can and I just couldn’t find the right link. I dunno, and I don’t really care.
Congratulations to the Mayor’s Office of Technology for creating a representation of the mayors office that truly reflects reality. It doesn’t work, half the time you can’t find anything, the other half the time, what you find isn’t what you need, some pages simply aren’t found, when you move from one pitifully done department page to another the entire look and feel changes, and you’ve apparently written the site to only work with the worst, most frustrating browser ever created so even if your site did work, it would still be a piece of shit because the browser necessary to see it is a piece of shit. Greg should give you all raises for so accurately modeling the mayors office online.

Great post, Jack. The city site is sooo horrible. I often find things on it by googling them.
You can call the Assessors Office and they will send you a homestead exemption. It has to be the color coded original. I suggest you send it back registered.
The assessor’s site is: http://www.opboa.org
I have no idea what it stands for, but it is actually rather interesting as you can type in your neighbor’s name and or address and see what they are paying for property taxes.
Don’t ever pay anything on line with the city - they will take your money and then come back at you with a late notice and interest fees a month later.

The place to pay parking tickets works beautifully. Maybe they’re only designed to take money in, and not give anything meaningful out.
Also, the assesors site stands for the Orleans Parish Board of Assesors (I’m not sure about the “B” but everything else is right)
I have had problems with paying sales/use tax and property taxes on line with the city.
I have not tried the parking ticket function, but will keep it in mind!
I kinda like jack’s definition better…
Thanks for this. I almost spat my beer out laughing. The city of No indeed.
