i weep for hibernia

Many of us are rather perturbed by the Capital One takover of Hibernia. Until now, the only reason I didn’t like Capital One is because they aren’t local and because I did not chose them. Now I have solid reason to not like them.
You see, I had to report a stolen debit card on Sunday. The process went smoothly and the lovely customer service agent offered to rush the card to me since I needed it by Wed. so that I could leave town on Thursday morning with some cash in hand. Super.
Wednesday afternoon I receive the card, but no pin number. They SNAFUed. So sorry. Nothing can be handled over the phone and I will just have to wait until I get back to go to a bank branch to establish a pin or wait for them to send me the pin in the mail, which they had intended to send at the same time as the card but failed to do.
What kind of geniuses rush a debit card but not the pin? The piece of plastic does me no good unless I can access the information it contains.
So, now there is actually a valid reason to dislike Capital One. Any suggestions on good banks ’round these parts?

I had a similar experience when reactivating my business account and ATM card. I’ve been generally happy with Capital One, but it’s the small things that combine to make a large headache. Case in point — adding my wife as a signer on the business account. Six weeks later, her signature had still not been added to the account. We were told things were “backed up.” But SIX WEEKS??? Damn.
We’re tempted to move the personal account to Whitney. No decisions yet.

Couldn’t you just go to a Capital One where ever you are and establish a pin? Isn’t that the big benefit to a bank being all over the place?

I know in the past I’d fallen victim to that sort of thinking with banks and was promptly laughed at, but give it a shot and let me know.

Not for nothing, but credit card companies do that so if your mail is stolen the theif doesn’t have your pin with the card. They purposely send them separate and generally on different days.

Standard procedure I’ve always been told.

It would think your problems could have been solved at once going to the CBD branch where they have *instant reissuing* and establishing your pin when they handed you the card in person.

If they didn’t tell you that - well, maybe that’s another reason to be angry.

I’ve been a generally happy Hiberna customer for several years, and haven’t had any problems (or need for customer service, actually) since the “What’s in your wallet” punks took over.

But I cannot recommend Whitey Bank for ANYTHING. Absolutely atrocious customer service, including being lied to multiple times in person and on the phone. Not to mention them closing the French Quarter branch DURING BUSINESS HOURS, preventing their customers from, ya know, DOING BUSINESS, so that we could be treated to yet another TV commercial appearance from Emeril “I like to pretend I’m from NOLA and since I have a French-sounding last name, people believe it”.

After they managed to steal $120 from me, claim it was my fault, then agree to give me my money back, then nix the deal while lying to me the entire time and trying to force me to call people who were all magically “on vacation”, I went to Hibernia.

Jack– that’s precisely the shittiest thing about Capital One- they’re not a national bank. They’re a credit card company who purchased Hibernia as their first bank acquisition. So not only do we have all the drawbacks that a huge corporation brings to banking, but when we go out of town we still have to use non-friendly ATMs and whatnot. I’d like to switch banks too but unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a clear alternative that’s any better.

Also, it pisses me off that the Hibernia building downtown is now officially called the Capital One building. I will never call it by it’s new name. That is an ancient and historic building that was New Orleans’ tallest for something like 80 years, it’s like renaming the goddamned Empire State Building.

Capital One will not reissue a card instantly at any branch.
But if I had received the card in time, I could have established a pin at any branch.
I am now out of state and SOL.
