Things to do This Month
October has always been my favorite month. Not only is my birthday in October, but the weather is always my favorite too. Partially because of the weather, October is host to some great events in Louisiana. Here’s a few:
Gretna Fest: Okay, most people look at me like I’m a retard when I talk about enjoying Gretna Fest, particularly westbank-o-phobes, but I can’t help myself. I love this event. This year’s entertainment includes Charlie Daniels, Eddie Money, Grand Funk Railroad, Johnnie AND Edgar Winter. There’s good food, good drink, good people watching, and good views of the city from across the river. Granted, this is not something I’d drive more than 30 minutes to attend, but its right across the bridge. Why not? Oct 6-8. $8 admission. http://www.gretnafest.com/
Oktoberfest: I talked about this event in a previous post. Good beer, good food, for a good cause. Every Friday and Saturday in October. $5 admission. http://www.deutscheshaus.org/toppage1.htm
The House of Shock: The only truly scary haunted house I’ve ever been to. Masterminded by Pantera lead singer Phil Anselmo, it is a giant Metairie warehouse packed full of all things shocking, satanic, and evil. No detail is spared. Even funner than the house tour is the wait, a winding monster of a line filled with the youth of Jefferson Parish. A demonic stage show is provided as entertainment for patrons of the line. Every weekend in October. $18 admission. http://www.houseofshock.com/
Angola Prison Rodeo: Art and handicrafts made by inmates? Check. Pork chop sandwiches and boudin balls made by inmates? Check. Lifer inmates with nothing to lose dueling 2,000 pound Brahma bulls? Check. This is the mother of all events. Every Sunday in October. $10 admission. http://www.angolarodeo.com/
