…so TBK and I are at Save-A-Center on Tchoup this afternoon and headed toward the checkout and I realize I’d forgotten beer. So I go back to the beer aisle and start perusing the various brands and have to look past some Blackened Voodoo to see some other stuff and WAIT A MINUTE! My mind goes “BLACKENED VOODOO=DIXIE BEER!” and my mouth says, “Jumpin’ Joe Montana on a pogo stick! That’s Dixie Beer!” and the guy beside me says, “where?” and I say, “right there, dude!” and he says “What the holy fuck!” and I say, “Oh man!” and we both grabbed some (the regular Dixie, not the Blackened Voodoo).

Not that Dixie is or ever was the apex of the brewer’s art. But those of us who have appreciated and loved the various Abita brands in the post-Katrina world just because they’ve been supportive and local (and mostly very excellent) now have a choice. Dixie is now being brewed by the Heiner Brau folks up in Covington (as noted on the label), but the quality is pretty much the same as before. It ain’t world class, but it’s ours and sometimes you’re just in a Dixie mood, y’know?

And yes, a tear came to my eye — just to see it back on the shelf again. One more of our too many empty holes has been filled in again.

Thanks.
