Happy Art Shit.

“I could while away the hours
Conferrin’ with the flowers”

Art in Bloom was this last weekend. I guess posting about it ahead of time would have been more productive, but then again, the Tennessee Williams Festival was this weekend as well and no one posted shit about that. And I would have actually gone to that had I remembered and wasn’t so busy. But I didn’t go to that or Art in Bloom in spite of my love for the museum and my indifference toward flowers. I did, however, help a friend build the exhibit for Leontine Linens last weekend. Actually my buddy tenant 2.0 helped out as well - guess he felt some stock in the place having rebuilt and improved their website a few months ago. I know it’s just a small display thingy, but it looks kinda nice and it was great to work with friends on something.

Besides, I usually spend all my time working alone. This weekend was a good example. Months of working alone finally came together and the house is nearly leveled. I only raised it about six inches (and that was only in one spot). But even though it doesn’t sound like much, six inches when you’re talking about raising a house is a huge deal - might as well be six miles when you don’t know what you’re doing. Leveling the house, like getting a roof on, is one of those things that stops all other projects until it’s done. It just doesn’t make sense to do anything until the house is sitting level on a strong foundation - and believe me it’s much more stable now.

That house falling on Thursday morning threw a hell of a scare into me. I was checking and rechecking everything the whole time. I even took off work yesterday to finish it up. Some contractor friends of mine came down Sunday with a hugely expensive orbital laser level deal. We took some readings and calculated how much each pier needed to be raised. This was invaluable. It made things so much simpler. The idea was, I needed to do this while it was fresh in my head - waiting until next weekend could be devastating. I’m glad I did.

Again, it’s a small victory but it’s still pretty cool since I can actually see a difference. So much of the crap I’ve done around the house in the last year (bought it last March) were tear outs and deconstruction and planning, etc. No sense of satisfaction in that really. Guess that’s true of the whole city though - the recovery effort on some scale has just been clean up and planning.

And another interesting note, they started late last week and through the weekend gutting the old bakery on Freret Street. I’d just like to say thanks to the owners of that building/business. Nice of you to wait almost 20 months to gut it - that gave me time to almost forget that Post-Katrina smell that got stuck in my sinus’ for a year. Appreciate it.
