I was planning to move back and maybe open a coffee shop, because there are no Starbucks there. It is a very different thing from La Madeleine being there. I hope they can't make their way in....and their lattes suck!!!

I wish you were joking about FEMA being the insurers.

I thought everyone already knew this. FEMA is the insurer of firehouses, police stations and generally any "govt owned" type building. That changes if the building is leased by the city from a privte operator. So Mayor Noggin (my fav) Mayor Kevorkian (EA fav) Mayor Nagone (some bs newspaper kat) does have a gripe. But the "project worksheets" are what gets the $$$ flowing and the city is responsible for those.

I like Starbuck's coffee but I think it's a terrible idea to put a big chain in the Quarter. La Madelaine shouldn't have been there either. That isn't just any piece of real estate. It is the geographical heart and soul of one of the most culturally important cities in the world. The businesses there should reflect local economic ventures at least. I think the City owns that half of the Pontabla. Is this their deal?

I'm personally anti-Starbucks because their coffee is awful. Period. I think that CC's and even (ugh) PJ's are both better than Starbucks, but I'd still rather get my coffee from Morning Call or CDM.

However, I would never deny someone wanting Starbuck's awful (AWFUL) coffee.

The problem that I have with Starbucks by Jackson Square is that it doesn't fit there. La Madeleine was a chain, but its products sold fit well enough with the heritage of the area that it wasn't too objectionable. Starbucks, however, is a Seattle coffee chain serving American-style coffee; doesn't really fit with the area.

I gotta say, I've never had such fun as singing the theme from "Cannonball Run" with the ENTIRE FREAKIN BAR every time it occurred as the movie played on the televisions in the Circle Bar. A unique experience. So random as to be unrepeatable, so much fun as only new orleans can engender.

Maybe the insurance money for rebuilding the police and fire stations (if there was any - I don't know) went to things like rebuilding the Superdome, bonus' for the mayor's executives, the community block grants given to Entergy (who made a profit last year and so electric bills wouldn't go up), Bill Jefferson's Freezer, the new trash removal services (still don't have a fucking garbage can), to the marketing firm to find a corporate sponsor for Mardi Gras which netted some free trash bags, the mayor's warchest for an as of yet unannounced next offfice bid, Ed Blakely's salary, etc....

My point is I'm sure it went to something equally, if not more important, than police and fire protection for the city. I mean, how often are there crimes and fires? We might as well be protecting ourselves against an alien invasion....oh, heh heh, guess that wasn't a good example. Ninguna ofensa, Mexicano.

There is a reason Starbucks is the biggest coffee chain around. They are the best. They are clean, eexcellent service and a superior product. So lets punish companies for being all stupid and great at what they do. Thats how we roll.
