Best bars

I’ve never been a big fan of Esquire magazine. I mean — they’ve had some good articles over their long history and, as a men’s magazine goes, it’s outwardly classier than most. Just not my kinda thing, y’know?

Anyway — Esquire is out with its list of the Best Bars In America. All of them listed in Louisiana are in New Orleans (rated American’s Best Bar City) — but all of them are in the French Quarter.

This, my friends, ain’t right. Did their researchers once cross Canal St? I know this is typical — but it’s nonetheless disappointing. Nothing against the FQ (I love the bar at Tujague’s) — really — but I’m thinking the fine editors at Esquire need guidance in where to drink in this city.

I’ll start the list by mentioning The Columns on St. Charles.

Um, none of those bars in any of the states is representative of anything except where they happened to be when they ordered a drink.

    Pathetic.

45 Tchop for best new bar. Only been open a couple of months. It’s owned by Frankie and Debbie of Parasol’s fame so you know it’s cool.

With a very strong personl bias since I spent five years tending bar there, Fat Harry’s has always been a favorite of mine. Post-Katrina, with the effort Carl and Victor made to get the place back up and running as fast as possible, they deserve a mention in any list of the great bars of the city.

I miss Butler’s. That was my favorite bar until it got run over with a criminal element. The Bridge Lounge is good late at night. The Saint is also a favorite. The Half Moon, St. Joe’s, Molly’s on the Market, Cooter Brown’s after all the college kids have gone home, and last but certainly not least, Handsome Willy’s is now my new favorite bar.

Finn McCool’s is one of my favorites, although it’s not really a typical New Orleans bar.

What’s the joint in the W hotel? I had 8 or 9 martini’s there one night. It was nice, what I remember of it anyway
