Jefferson Davis
I am walking around uptown near Magazine Street today and I stumble across this little historical marker of sorts. Actually I walked right past it and then came back to read it as it is nondescript. I know full well who Jefferson Davis was, no self respecting Southerner wouldn’t (no American should either for that matter), but I never took the time to think about what really happened to him after the whole North winning thing.
Evidently, after spending a couple years in jail with no trail (sound familiar?) he got out on bail and subsequently toured Europe and generally laid low with the occasional public appearance spread here and there throughout the South. In the winter of 1889, he was traveling through New Orleans visiting a friend and died in this house just off Magazine St.
Just another piece of history nestled among the narrow streets and old houses of the city. If there is one thing I like about this city it is the history. It might be dirty, but hell, it’s old and I find it fascinating to be simply walking down a sidewalk and happen upon a historical marker such as this one.

address????
On First St., about two houses lakeside of Magazine, on the Uptown side of the street.
Rayna — if I’da know you were in the neighborhood, I’d have bought you a drink.
There’s a virtual geocache there:

I saw the virtual cache and went back for it. So now I’ve been there twice.
Thanks Craig for stepping in with the address and for the drink offer, I’ll take you up on it sometime.
