Wow K. - sounds like a hell of a time. I have to get a new license so your advice is wonderful - about Airline Drive as well as the meditation, Febreeze and Russian lit. I have some Turgenev I have been meaning to finish so hopefully the DMV will be the place.

Yep - you get your bridge tag at the DMV right next to the toll booths on the bridge... it's tricky as hell to get to. I drove around for an hour cursing before I gave in and asked directions at the RTA office. The lady was very helpful and sent me straight to it; without her I Never would have found it. I was going for a new DL but after waiting there for two hours reading the Gambit cover to cover, I was informed that they don't do new driver's licenses there, only CDLs and brake tags, car tags, etc. So that was half a day of work down the toilet. Had to go to the mother on Airline. That place smells like a cafeteria and a high school gym put together. That was around six hours of back and forth with the DMV clerks. Apparently my insurance lapsed for more than 10 days on my car (it was a grand total of 17 days; car insurance wasn't high on my list, finding out whether my friends were alive seemed more important.. call me crazy), so I was fined 50.00. I paid it by money order a month before I went in to the DMV, but it still hadn't been processed in Red Stick, so I had to pay it again in cash right there, otherwise I couldn't get a license. This all took most of a day. Be prepared. Bring Febreeze and a Dostoyevsky novel. Meditate beforehand.

You get the toll tag at the Bridge Police office also kinda under da bridge--don't worry, no trolls--toward the river from DeGaulle. I go to the Harvey DMV usually, too. Good advice to get there early. They shut down early, like 2:30 pm, I think. Typical LA gummint.

Thanks for all the help!

Just so everyone knows, you cannot actually get a toll tag by phone. There is a phone number (376-8190) but after the voice message picks up, all of the options leasd to a dead line. Very tricky!

You can also get a toll tag by telephone. Check out this website:
<a href="http://www.dotd.state.la.us/operations/cccd/toll_tags.asp" rel="nofollow">http://www.dotd.state.la.us/operations/cccd/toll_tags.asp</a>

Also, I live in Algiers but I got my driver's license at the Harvey office. The line to get into the building was really long but that was only because you can do a lot of other things in the building so once you went through the scanner it only took me 20 minutes to get my license renewed, go as soon as it opens.

The DMV on the Westbank is under the bridge. They say it stays clear so that you can go in and out without much wait (probably cuz nobody can find it). The other is on the WB Expressway on your left if you are about to go into the Harvey tunnel, on your right if you just passed the tunnel. And of course, the mother of all DMV's, the Airline office right before David Dr, on your right hand side if you're driving towards the airport (if you passed the skate park, you went too far). Hope it helps.

Algiers Office

Driving Directions to Office: From New Orleans East - take I-10, cross the Mississippi River Bridge, get into the far right hand lane. Get off at general DeGaulle West. At the first light make a left turn, stay in left lane. Office is under the bridge.
