At What Cost

Last night a friend who is renovating a house in Treme called to say the house had been robbed of its architectural pieces . . . again. The first time the bandits took the cornices right off the front of the house. He found them at the Bank and got them back. This time, thieves broke in and took everything of value, including his pocket doors. He took off work this morning to to go hunt down his stuff at the local salvage yards . . . so far no luck.

Today I got an email from a good friend, someone who worked to help get the restaurant open after the storm. She was out of town for a month and upon returning, was attacked :

A guy attacked me in front of my apartment in Bywater, held me in a headlock, threatened my life repeatedly, then forced me into my car and tried to drive off with me in it. Luckily, I escaped. But I’ve been taking the past couple weeks away from New Orleans to…well, I don’t know. I guess to figure things out. But there isn’t a lot of figuring out this kind of thing.

In the struggle with her attacker, Miss T. was bitten on the back. NOPD did not send her to the emergency room for her injury nor to attempt to gather a DNA sample. The DA, however, has agreed to prosecute the case. They caught the guy driving around in her stolen cars hours later . . . with some friends. He’s in jail. For now. She’ll have to be diligent to be sure they get a conviction.

This has left me feeling rather depressed today. My niece has decided to attend Tulane University. She’ll be coming in the Fall. It’s hard for me to say that this is a good idea except she’ll be studying medicine and will be too busy to leave the safe haven of campus. They are giving her a sizeable scholarship. So there ya go. Maybe someone needs to pay me to live here. Hardship allowances for all of us.

Shit. Your odds are better that you could be paid not to live here: It’s a pyramid scheme!!

but it isn’t hopeless this shows it is possible to get paid to live here.
