Sunday! Sunday!! Sunday!!!
I would have completely missed this had a friend not mentioned it in an email this morning. Against the Tide:The Battle for New Orleans There are some clips on the site. Pretty standard stuff you’d expect to see. Interesting that it’s on CNBC – guess we don’t rate the major networks anymore despite the mayor’s best efforts to have the murder rate keep us in the national consciousness. And it is interesting the title is so confrontational. A battle is exciting! Seems to me we’re living in the boring part of the movie. Ya know the part where the battle is over and the helicopter mounted camera is panning out as the wounded are tended to and the credits start to roll? Is that just me? I’d have named the show ‘Treading Water: Languishing in New Orleans’.
I find escape in the intertron from all the woes of life. The internet is like a party that’s perpetually going on and you can come and go anytime day or night without fear of missing something too important. I chat with friends I’ve never met, with friends who’ve moved away, with friends I’ve lost touch with, and the guy on the other side of the cube wall that I see every day. You can buy drugs online. You can find God online. You can have sex online. You can join a terrorist organization online. And you know what? I really like the non-judgmental-ness of the internet. The reason it can be so non-judgmental is because of relative anonymity. Well, anonymity, uh, what’s a good simile? Like masturbating in front of a friends pet. That’s a good way to describe it. I mean say it’s a dog, it’s looking at you, it has a vague idea that it’s seen you before – at least enough not to bark at you, it doesn’t understand what you’re doing exactly but it seems less odd than other things going on in the house(dishes, for example), it isn’t going to tell anyone because there’s nothing to tell, and in the end, let’s face it, it isn’t your dog anyway so what the hell do you care what the dog thinks? I guess my point is that pets, like the internet, are so non-judgmental that we’ll do things in front of them that we’d hesitate to do in the company of other people most of the time. The exception to this are cats. If you own a cat, trust me, it hates you. And the reason its trying to get out of the house every time you open the door is so it can go tell all the other cats the creepy shit you do “when you’re alone”.
Anyway, being a geek by trade, I thought I’d share some of my ‘it’s Friday and not too busy’ distractions.
By far, the funniest thing ever is Foamy. I’ve been a fan of this site for years and years. I love it! Be sure to look around, the tech support cartoons are the best! And the Chamber of Human horrors. There’s some adult subject matter and foul language so it isn’t appropriate for work unless you have headphones. Oddly though, I’ve never purchased a shirt or anything there. I’m always in the market for some internet t-shirts.
Once you’re done with that, how about some tunes while you surf around the net.
On a more serious note, I ran across this great article this morning. I’d never been to the site before but I don’t think I’m the target audiance.
This is one of my favorite sites around. It’s a good way to keep up on who’s being an ass.
And lastly, if you really want to burn some time. I mean really just burn through your weekend without being the least bit productive there’s DIGG and MASHABLE. These are Aggregator sites. They really just gather information from all around the web and put them in one easy to find place.
There are many more sites I visit regularly like my longest running internet crush (me and everyone else) The Hot Librarian. Really something interesting is “Delicious” which allows you to share bookmarks. Mine’s here And you can subscribe to other people’s bookmarks…really neat.
So there’s your Friday Geeky Fun.
The internet: like a window in a FEMA trailer, sometimes you forget it’s there and embarrass yourself.
