Dingdingding!!!

I was driving through the St. Charles/Calliope intersection this morning and, what ho, here comes a streetcar.

…not going around Lee Circle — but indeed going through the intersection toward Uptown. Granted, it had a sign on it that said “not in service.” But it was there, under its own power, nudging Uptown for the first time in over two years.

…so here is the RTA’s brief news release about what’s going on. The streetcars, I am told, will return to St. Charles as far as about Napoleon in pretty short order.

I can’t wait.

I’ll be interesting to see if I can hear them from my house. They haven’t run by since I’ve lived there. I’m kinda looking forward to my first trip after so long. I haven’t actually lived near the streetcar line in 5 or 6 years – used to use it all the time but its been a while.

i wonder what this will mean for us bus riders. will we have to pay for a transfer now? two fares, bus and streetcar? i love the streetcars but honestly i was hoping they would wait until i bought a car. now my two hour bus ride ten miles to work is going to be even longer.

ah, but i have missed them. it’ll be good to ride on one again, and hear that roaring sound when they go over the concrete on the neutral ground.

And here I am in Sarasota, FL, stuck with the Snowbird traffic starting…I remember taking the St. Charles Street Car to Christ Church Cathedral on a Tuesday morning. Later I remember riding to Benjamin Franklin High School and turning the corner onto Carrolton (spelling) and getting off.
I have riden the St. Charles Street Car after school all the way to downtown Canal Street and then transferring to a bus across the street headed out to see my girl friend. Ah those were the days. I think she is in Houston now. I keep promising myself a trip back to New Orleans. This may be the thing that gets me there.

    kapaali,

They’ll probably continue what they’re doing now — keep the bus running for the entire line with the streetcar as a supplement. I doubt you’ll have to transfer.
