Shooting In the Irish Channel

Constance and Washington Ave Shooting

Noladishu sent me a photo of the corner where the shooting happened. He says, “The crime camera is clearly visible about 8 feet above the street sign. It is active (or at least it moves around inside the bubble).”

As I drove back from a quick but delectable lunch today Janita’s, Craig’s place, I ran across a shooting in the Irish Channel at Washington and Constance Streets around 2:45 pm. The little yellow cones marking the presence of shell casings at the corner alerted me to the fact that there was a crime scene investigation going on. The whole blocked was shut down by NOPD.

I circled the block and spoke to a resident who said there had been a man down and an ambulance and Craig said there was gunfire there last night as well. I would have tried to get some photos but I had to get to work so I didn’t want to risk a confrontation with the cops. I have yet to see a report about this incident in the news. But with the all the tourists in town, and many of them were on Magazine St. today sporting their LSU colors, perhaps we won’t hear anything at all about it.

Residents know that the way NOPD’s crappy ass crime reporting works, unless someone is killed, the chances of it being made public are slim. NOPD is crafty at placing unsolved shootings within some vague category such as an “assault”. It looks like we’re on track for another award winning year of violence in New Orleans. Our homicide rate was the highest per capita last year but the sad part of this is that there are probably many more shootings such as this one which impact the quality of life for residents in New Orleans which were under reported.

I would love to move back and rebuild my life in my hometown, but as a single woman I don’t think I would feel safe living alone. It breaks my heart because I miss home dearly, and brings me to question if my life is worth losing because of the emptiness I feel not being near friends and loved ones. For now I think I had better just continue to visit as often as I can and pray things will settle enough to return where I belong.

That shooting took place right beneath a crime camera. Go to the intersection and look at the downtown/lakeside corner up the telephone pole.

Clay, I recently called upon our Capt. to look at the scenes from the camera in our area regarding a minor incident in my area and he sort of brushed it off. I am thinking they are not yet live due to his mushy response. Again, is NOPD faking it?

I live in the channel not too far from Craig and I can agree with you that crimes are way underreported. Even when there is a murder. There were 2 attempts last weekthat had my block unaccessable, even to me. I had to jump my own back fence and sneak into my own house one evening. And I couldn’t leave again til almost 8pm. I finally did and brought my car closer to home. But I did miss the movie I was supposed to go to.

I have it on good word, that the house that is home to the major players on my block, is owned by a Magazine St shop owner, not far from J’Anita’s. He said he gave them a 30 day eviction notice. I hope it gets better real soon, I pay a lot of money to live here and I rather not be accidentally shot.

Ouch, live in this block long ago in the early 80’s. It was bad neighborhood then. I hope this can be resolved
