P.S. Craig - I heard your wife and son on NPR the other day, talking about the urgent care center!

I agree with Colby and Jim. I used to live right around there and would wander in there from time to time, each time hoping it was better than the last time I had visited, but it never was. Overpriced, records in poor condition, and the staff was never friendly. Of course, this was 8 or 10 years ago, so they probably have different workers now (or not - this IS New Orleans). While I hate to see any record store go out of business and I certainly want to see the independent stores stay open, Jim Russell's was never my favorite.

Jim Russell's is the epitome of what a record store SHOULD NOT BE.....so overpriced even the Japanese tourists have stopped going there....take a glance at their Ebay store and get yourself a copy of "Rumors" by Fleetwood Mac for $40 or Elton Johns "Greatest Hits" for $30, hey it's rated VG, if it was mint it would be $40 too, lol.....they never take condition into account when pricing, much less reality, if the item is priced at all.......the one good thing is that they do sell needles....

Oh no! I'll be sure to go by there this weekend. Every time I go in there, something's going on. Last time I went to go buy a turn table pad and some guy was standing in the door preaching about the state of rap these days and how much he missed the Fat Boys and Easy E, etc. And everyone in the store was chiming in with their favorite old school rap bands while flipping through the vinyl. No one knew each other, but we were all about the same age and instantly bonded over Dr. Dre and the Beastie Boys. That doesn't happen in Virgin... if they were still here, that is. I love Jim Russell's. It was my first real record store. The first time I went was on a field trip in high school from Mobile, way before I moved here. I found the promo version for Licensed to Ill on vinyl and they sold it to me for 5 bucks because that's all the cash I had. I still have it, and I'm sure it's worth a bit more than 5.00 now.

While I don't wish financial trouble on anyone, this place went out of its way to get into trouble. 1) The records are typically in poor condition 2) The solution to a leaking roof with water hitting records was to place a tarp over the records 3) Te records are typically over priced 4) The staff may be knowledgable about certain genres, but is far too spotty about a wide range, which cripples them in pricing, filing, and general ability to banter and get people interested.

As far as landmark status, no, unless crowning youself a landmark counts.
