I used to live right around there and would wander in there from time to time, each time hoping it was better than the last time I had visited, but it never was. Overpriced, records in poor condition, and the staff was never friendly. Of course, this was 8 or 10 years ago, so they probably have different workers now (or not - this IS New Orleans). While I hate to see any record store go out of business and I certainly want to see the independent stores stay open, Jim Russell's was never my favorite. I agree with Colby and Jim. I'll be sure to go by there this weekend. Every time I go in there, something's going on. Last time I went to go buy a turn table pad and some guy was standing in the door preaching about the state of rap these days and how much he missed the Fat Boys and Easy E, etc. And everyone in the store was chiming in with their favorite old school rap bands while flipping through the vinyl. No one knew each other, but we were all about the same age and instantly bonded over Dr. Dre and the Beastie Boys. That doesn't happen in Virgin... if they were still here, that is. I love Jim Russell's. It was my first real record store. The first time I went was on a field trip in high school from Mobile, way before I moved here. I found the promo version for Licensed to Ill on vinyl and they sold it to me for 5 bucks because that's all the cash I had. I still have it, and I'm sure it's worth a bit more than 5.00 now. Oh no!
