    He needs a haircut.

File this blog under “B” for bull sh*t! If you ever had your 15 minutes of fame you’d know that we all need some time away from all the fans. Everyone needs their space.

He gave up Uma. Nobody who gives up Uma is worth a damn. ;)

Update: Ironically enough someone beat me in giving Ethan Hawke an asshat award. Link.

Celebrities, some of them like Ethan Hawke should realize that they wouldn’t be where they are without fans.

It’s quite easy for us non-celebrities to think that a 20 second picture is not too much to ask of a celebrity. But we haven’t been in those shoes. We aren’t the ones getting constantly followed, begged for autographs and pictures. It happens to this man all day long, every day of his life, everywhere he goes.

Is he not allowed to have a bad day once in a while?

The only asshat here is you, for thinking that Ethan Hawke owes you anything.

He even bothered to say “Sorry”, and you’re saying he’s a jerk. Maybe you should reassess who the jerk is.

  8. Mike Hoffman (unregistered) on March 27th, 2005 @ 3:56 pm

I made it clear in the original post that celebrities have no specific obligation to me nor anyone.

Many of us have this psychological reaction to try and sympathize with the celebrity position because we want to be in that position. They

Well, you got your photo, even if you’re not getting any Hawke’ish lovin’.

  10. Sean Penn (unregistered) on March 27th, 2005 @ 9:51 pm

Celebrities aren’t a commodity, you aren’t his friend, so why don’t you leave the guy alone, and stop treating people like the Liberty Bell?

You’re the asshat for caving in to celebrity culture.

  11. Mike Hoffman (unregistered) on March 27th, 2005 @ 11:20 pm

Don’t try to pull that TUL too cool for school attitude on me, young man! I might be the only reason you have a show.

As a side note, I’d treat the liberty bell a lot better. At least the liberty bell has some crack.

im certainly no celebrity but can identify with his choice to want some time off while he’s innocently hanging out at a bar. I’ve been in the very same bar, relaxing with friends, when strangers have come up and ruined the mood with drunken bullshit about work related stuff.

In theory I agree with the “why not take two seconds” but the thing is… probably if he’d said yes to you then 100 other people would have asked that night.

Maybe the government should hide celebrities. Something like what they do with superheroes in The Incredibles :P hehe

We have to think of something better though since celebrities don’t have masks… or do they?

  14. jfbiii (unregistered) on March 28th, 2005 @ 9:33 am

I happened to be in DBA Friday night and I obviously didn’t see him. If I had, I would have just ignored him, like I ignored everyone else in the bar except the person I went with. Wow. Ethan Hawke. Big freakin’ deal. I’m glad he was an asshat. Nobody should give a rat’s ass whether he’s Ethan Hawke or just some other drunk out to have a little fun.

“I might be the only reason you have a show.”

    Wow. Who’s the asshat again?

  16. Mike Hoffman (unregistered) on March 28th, 2005 @ 1:31 pm

No - literally - I might be the only reason he has a show. Not only was I being arrogant, I was being factual.

My guess, since you didn’t leave a real email address, would be that you’re a junior and you wouldn’t know the story.

  17. rcs (unregistered) on March 28th, 2005 @ 3:58 pm

I’m with Mike, he’s an asshat! Those who cultivate and profit from celebrity (as opposed to those who encounter it randomly, i.e. everyday hero types) should not expect that they can just flick it on and off like a switch. You make six figures for a couple of months work on movies that’ll run for maybe two years total and now you’re too good for a little meet-and-greet with the unwashed masses? Eff you.

  18. Sean Penn (unregistered) on March 28th, 2005 @ 5:44 pm

Let’s see if I can break this down.

    1. You want to treat a person like your new toy.

    2. Person declines to be your monkey.

    3. You take hysterical offense at person.

    4. You, like a dumbass, take a picture in front of the person, and post it to a blog, because no matter what, you are going to get a picture with a famous person! Look at me! Look at my new starfucker picture! HAHAHA!

    5. You then have the gall to call the guy names for not wanting a picture with a dumbass such as yourself.

    You are a complete dipshit.

  19. Mike Hoffman (unregistered) on March 28th, 2005 @ 9:50 pm

Sean, here are some excerpts from the original post that you might have missed:

    “I understand that you

im with sean penn on this one… you take a (kinda desperate) picture after he said no and now youre slamming him online.

all the while praising yourself and writing off anyone (like me) who lives outside the presumably Tulane bubble as a “junior.” I think the fact that you write someone off as a “junior” so he wouldnt know the story on your own celebrity (?) pretty much sums up your mindset.

live and let live! if he doesnt want to be in a picture he shouldnt get roasted for it!

  21. Jeremy (unregistered) on March 29th, 2005 @ 1:16 am

in reference to “As a human being, you have a choice whether to be a nice person or not.”

I dont think someone who apologizes in advance for allowing a photo falls into the ‘not nice’ category.

  22. Mike Hoffman (unregistered) on March 29th, 2005 @ 8:11 am

The so-called “desperate picture” was purely serendipitous, taken before I knew he was in the bar by my friend Tom.

    >all the while praising yourself and writing off >anyone (like me) who lives outside the presumably >Tulane bubble as a “junior.” I think the fact >that you write someone off as a “junior” so he >wouldnt know the story on your own celebrity (?) >pretty much sums up your mindset.

I wrote off Anna for not getting her facts straight. She never thought of the possibility that I might have been correct. Pointing out that she was possibly as junior was only to highlight that I had no expectation of her knowing a story that happened years ago. I did, however, expect her to check her facts or at least ask me “How so?”. She did neither.

Jeremy - was it an apology? In a reponse to someone above who pointed that out, I thought that it wasn’t. “Adding the word “sorry” to a patronizing comment doesn’t lessen its effect.”

There are many ways to read that line. If it was a genuine apology, it was a sorry read for an accomplished actor.

Geez Mike, Let the man drink his pints in peace. ha ha ha ha ha ha.

  24. Max Sparber (unregistered) on March 29th, 2005 @ 9:05 am

I share (iirc) Matthew Broderick’s attitude — he always stops to talk with fans, sign autographs, and take pictures. According to him, that’s his end of the contract of fame.

Hawke’s assmilinery is well established. After all, he got on Howard Stern and talked about how Uma Therman’s private parts weren’t as tight after giving birth to their child. Not an astoundingly sensitive fellow.

  25. jeremy (unregistered) on March 29th, 2005 @ 11:19 am

bottom line, i just dont think Ethan Hawke “owes” anybody a picture!

There’s no contract to fame and Hawke is paid to make movies, not take photos with cocky bloggers in bars.

And I bet there are very few films Mike has actually paid to see solely because Ethan Hawke is in them.

Funny this subject has heated up the board so much!! I hope people keep debating future topics…

  26. JennB (unregistered) on March 29th, 2005 @ 11:32 pm

I got your back, Mike (Hoffman). Ethan’s known for being full of himself, so I’m not surprised he gave you the brush-off.

    Hoffman, you know the rules.

New Orleanians leave these Hollywood types alone. Treat em just like everyone else…people. They ain;t nothin; special, brah!

    Dude, where’s my f’n car?!!

    Are you serious?

He’s in New Orlean’s for “Mardi Gras” the freeist publique holiday on earth

an’ ‘ee doesn’t expect his image to get taken!! Mai oui, chez, non!

    Earthquakes! Volcanoes! What’s next?

I would’ve followed his ass to the bar at the corner of St. Peter’s - wait, snap!
