Positive news….

It’s good to see the National Guard trucks moving and to find out the water levels are pretty much holding stable. It’s pretty much the first postive news we’ve had as a city.

Being refugees has forced us to confront new realities and possibilities, particularly since it might be a while before we’ll actually be able to return to stay. I’m iself-employed in a food business that was just beginning to take off and fly a bit on its own when this storm struck. To wit…

1) when we actually go home, what shape will my production facility be in? Since it’s in Mid-City, I’m assuming it’s already full of water.

2) Even if I can get the equipment operating again someplace else, 75 percent of my business is done in metro New Orleans. Lord knows how long it might be (2006?) before any local clients will be able to start placing orders again.

3) So far, our house seems to be dry. But when we get back in, how long will it be before anything else is around us? The neighbors will return, but how long before any of us can start earning a paycheck again? I mean — earning a paycheck ANYwhere?

Insurance and federal dollars will, of course, be a help. I’ve never taken a dime of public assistance of any kind, but have already started trying to negotiate those hoops with as little confirmed information as I can get to this point. But I’m only one of hundreds of thousands facing the same questions and dilemmas. At least it appears (assuming the water stays where it is) I’ll have four walls to go back to, which is a hell of a lot more than many, many others will be able to say.

It’s both a problem and an opportunity.

    I have to say it’s comforting to read some “positive news” out of NOLA. CNN makes it look like a war zone and for some macabre reason I can’t stop watching and reading the news. It is of course disturbing to see all the distruction, but downright depressing to see and hear of the looting. WTF is wrong with folks, food and water maybe but TVs? Although the Whole Foods comment gave me a smile.
    I came across your site while Googling for some more info on Katrina. It’s nice to hear a human side to the events. Not sure what I wanted to say other than, try and take care and good luck. Seems like I would like to help somehow but not sure how or what. I did donate to the Red Cross but that seems like such a small impact. I’ll probably be keeping an eye on your site for updates. God bless you all and take care of each other.

    CK, I’m removed from the situation, being in Dallas, but last I heard Algiers was severely damaged, though of course it’s in better shape than the city proper. Water is potable, and refugees are being moved there to get them out of the floodwaters. Some reports of violent crime in K’s aftermath, and there’s likely to be control problems due to the influx of refugees.

    TRYING TO HELP
    I’m sitting here in St. Louis trying to get SOMEONE in officialdome to tell me what is needed and where to bring it. We do industrial installations and construction work - we have welding equipment, water tanks, tools , chain saws, trailers etc etc but dispite dozens of calls and e-mails to FEMA, the mayor’s office, USACE, etc … no response. It’s driving me crazy to sit her on my thumbs while one of america’s greatest cities suffers.

    I’d jump in my truck and just head south with a bunch of tools but i know some state cop at a roadblock 40 miles north of Biloxi will stop me, then i’ll be siting there on my thumbs again. We want to help, but HOW????
