When “Sweetie” can get you in trouble
A few days ago I received a phone call on my cell phone from a man looking for “Rosa” after establishing that yes ‘Rosa’ is coincidentally very similar to ‘Rayna’ and the fact was that he had dialed the wrong number and I was not the woman he was trying to reach, we hung up.
Naively I thought the whole thing was over until this morning when I received another call from this same number. I picked it up planning to explain this Rosa had given him the wrong number and it was time to give it up. Predictably, he asked for Rosa and I said
“Sweetie, I am really sorry but Rosa doesn’t live here, you have the wrong number.”
The man who the first time we spoke was quick to respond, hesitated. Then he said
“You sound nice.”
Immediately I knew there was a change in his voice, he went on to complement me on how nice I seemed and ask me if I was from New Orleans too, if I had a boyfriend and do I like to travel. I was in shock at that moment, and “nicely” told him I was not interested and would have to go now…click.
After I hung up I was wondering how some guy could just start talking to me like that and totally change around the conversation, what prompted him to act like that. Then I realized I had made the first move, between him waking me up giving me that morning groggy (sexy) voice and calling him an affectionate intimate name (sweetie) did he think I was coming onto him?
Interestingly the number the man dialed from was a 713 area code that I have recently learned is located in Houston, Texas, which adds a bit of a social, Katrina issue to this whole thing.
