Update from Lonelyland*

After several ill-advised conversations with people over the last couple of weeks, I’ve come to the conclusion that I really shouldn’t interact with people any more than necessary. But then I thought it might be nice to not completely disappear from the planet – funny thing about disappearing: sometimes people don’t really notice you’re gone and won’t be there when you get back.

On with the show!!

I see the mayor’s friends, er, staff are making quite a tidy sum of money for doing not a damn thing – it’s the lead story on nola.com so I won’t bother to link it here.

The Unorganized New Orleans Plan or whatever they’re calling it appears to be dead in the water. No one saw that coming….enuf said there.

That kind of shit bores me anymore – what’s left to say about it? Nothing. Moving on…

I had a friend come back into the city to pick some shit up to take to her new home in New York and she was utterly amazed and a little disgusted at the minimal progress that has been made in the last eight months since she left. Seeing the city through her eyes for even a few hours was painful at best. She’s right though. And then yesterday all the traffic lights uptown suddenly decided not to work again (further proof of her vision of the city). I guess the street lights don’t work when it rains. Fine by me.

More people getting stopped by cops for traffic violations…hear the stories all the time. More people trying to hold it together until after Mardi Gras and then they’re out of here…hear it all the time. More people asking themselves how much longer they can hang in there waiting for things to snap into place….constantly hearing that. etc, etc, etc…. buy a helmet and keep your head down people; that’s my advice.

On lighter news, I adopted a beautiful 2 month old Black Lab puppy last week that I’ve named Scout** and it has been absolutely amazing to spend time with her. I know how the elderly and infirmed feel now about their pets. See, she needs me, but in a way I can actually provide. Even if I’m helpless in every other way I can still take care of her and she appreciates it. Man, has it come to this? I’ve aged 30 years in 18 months? Naw, its just my wonderful ability to empathize with others! But I’m not kidding about there being something therapeutic about having a puppy. And in looking around and doing some research (I did give it a ridiculous amount of thought before adopting – I didn’t go into it lightly) I came to realize that there are really a lot of animals, young and older, that need homes. And I guess I didn’t realize how many animals are euthanized every day. I don’t know how the volunteers work there….I couldn’t do it. So if you’ve been thinking of adopting a pet, give it some serious thought. It’ll sure chase away those rainy day blues.

So that’s it people. I’m staying in and laying low. I’m hanging with Scout and trying to not let the things these idiots in charge do get on my nerves. I didn’t vote for them and I never will. Hell, I may never vote again. It is odd how current events around here are tied to 18 months ago – Time has stopped here in some ways. I’ll start watching the news again when I start seeing change around me – otherwise I suspect the news is a rerun and even journalists aren’t really trying anymore. Anyone notice all the spelling errors in our award winning newspaper lately? It’s really nice.

I have to confess I will probably be going out to krewe du view this weekend in spite of my inability to join that krewe for some reason. I’ll probably be at Mimi’s or somewhere in the area. Good luck finding me since I look nothing like the picture in my profile anymore – We can play “where’s Jackdo”. Other than that, if anyone wants to see me they’ll have to call or email me and make an appointment. Heh Heh – I’m just kidding***

Thanks for reading, people. And remember, I’m a comment whore so lemme have ’em!!

*Lonelyland is one of my favorite albums – can anyone name the artist without Google?*
**Anyone name the novel I took the name from? I know its an easy one**
***And by kidding I mean I’m not taking visitors at all – appointment or not.**

Good job MindyMoo = exactly right.

Also a good job on a slightly more obscure question Mary Alice – I *was* talking about Bob Schneider. “Blue Skies for Everyone”…can’t beat it.

i’m a huge bob fan — even his dirty dirty stuff w/ the scabs.

lonelyland is definitely one of my all time fav’s — i’ve bought and given away soo many copies.

and even this many years after it’s release it’s one that when it comes up or i’m just in that mood — i can listen to over and over again.

do you have the “safe” version — or the “explicit” cd?

he’s a dirty dirty man :) — but i would so not kick him out of bed. — maybe out of the house after a week or two – but . . .

hey monkey-boy, that’s a great name! wonderful novel, and all time fav movie of mine. i’ve always loved the way scout would tilt her head and look at ‘Boo’, just adoreable.
    *bob schneider, excellent.

i too got a new pup last monday! he’s 2 months old, all black with gold tip ears and paws — he certainly has all the right colors!
    * if you have any ‘training’ tips…please, pass them along to me. :/

i’ll bring ‘reggie’ to mimi’s if you bring scout. ;D

Wow Termite, the whole bring the puppies to Mimi’s thing is tempting, but I’m just not so sure that’s a good idea, plus, Scout has Kennel Cough and is on medicine so she can’t drink for two weeks. I was going to take a cab over so I can drink and Scout always makes fun of the cabbies – I don’t know what her problem is.

But if you wanna get together for a “puppy date” earlier on Saturday a park or coffee shop, that might be nice. I was thinking of taking her down to the Bulldog on Magazine St. for lunch and a drink (me a drink not her – medicine, remember?).

gimme a call or email or something….and congrats on the puppy…Scout’s been looking for someone her own age….lol

Also, I’ll make you a copy of the dvd the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter gave me when I adopted her – It’s got some really great info about training – I was surprised how much of it I’ve been using – especially the kennel training thing, man, that’s the way to go. If I don’t see you this weekend then I’ll put it somewhere you can download it.

Oh, and Mary Alice….I’ve downloaded all the Bob Schneider I could find -I think I have it all but I could be wrong.

He is a dirty bastard….and if you ever get a chance to see him at a small bar, he’s really kinda cool to hang out with if he’s pretty sober.

Being that I didn’t get offer my answers to either trivia (mine were wrong, so I’ll forgive the others for being first), Jack, what’s this LEAH thingy all about, anyway?
    (I’m nosy.)

Well, good catch first of all….damn good catch. The thing is, a friend of mine reads this sometimes and she’s sort of having a rough time so I thought I’d put that in my posts as sort of a quiet nod to her. I figure that beats some corny “best wishes…” bullshit.

Plus I figured no one else would notice it – I have this view that people sort of skim though my writing looking for something potentially funny; or counting the unnecessary uses of profanity but not really paying attention to the detail for the most part. Nice to be proven wrong….you must really like e.e. Cummings writing…lol

  13. Kenny (unregistered) on January 30th, 2007 @ 1:48 pm

Jack, you’re cool as hell. People are paying attention. People care. I’m just smarter and way more perceptive than all of them. ALL OF THEM.

As far as cummings, I make it a point to only read his dirty poetry.

  14. Jack Ware (unregistered) on January 30th, 2007 @ 2:08 pm

Don’t forget modest, Kenny. You left that out of the list.

    Thanks for the compliment.

i may have some obsure recordings of his – done at a small venue that is basically a yoga studio – in a city not to be name – due to the fact i don’t want your disdain just yet.

i’ve seen him in many different sized venues – as stated -from a yoga studio – to a great mid sized bar – to an outdoor festival – where the cussing was ramant – it was lovely.

    hugs to scout
    hang in there
